Emoni Bates Article: Get Your Hopes Up
I hadn't seen this posted and it had just enough tease for me to get my hopes up. Do we have an open scholarship in 2021?
kentucky if it happens
I would strongly advise against getting your hopes about getting Bates. The nba rule is likely to change, and he is a lock as first overall as soon as he is eligible.
Read the article - he may reclassify to 2021. He would only be 17 and not yet eligible for the NBA.
Thanks - my reading comprehension was suspect. And it is foolishness not to get in the early offer... just in case!
Absolutely- why any Blue Blood wouldn’t throw in an offer, I don’t have a clue.
Juwan would have to give him his entire salary for 2021 to get him to come to Michigan.
The only way I would hold out any hope to get this kid, if it'll even be possible, is if Juwan makes two final four appearances in a row.
I’d be willing to make that sacrifice to get a talent like that.
Taking one for the team, a true Wolverine!
Thanks!
The expectation of Juwan being an elite recruiter on here is ridiculous.
Franz Wagner's on the team. I'm willing to give Juwan some credit there.
Of course you're willing to give Juwan credit, but in reality he decided before Howard was even on board...
Apparently you read a different account of his recruitment than the rest of us did. He was far from decided until after Howard was hired.
here's another spot where reading the article comes in handy:
"[Elgin] Bates said he's been good friends with Howard for so long, they went to Chris Webber's draft party together in 1993."
seems like that might help?
Well, he does have a 5* he's known since BIRTH !
That can't hurt
Did you know that KFC uses 11 herbs and spices?
If the NBA decides to change the eligibility rules, Bates is as good as gone. That being said, Juwan needs to recruit him just in case it doesn't. He's the best HS player in the country and he's in their backyard. The KD comparison seems to fit him because he's skilled at 6'8" (and still growing) which makes him a matchup nightmare at the 3/4 spot. He already averaged 30-10 as a freshman at Ypsi Lincoln and led the to a state title.
Seriously, why are most people commenting without reading the article.
They are considering the possibility of graduating from HS a year early to play 1 year of college.
He would only be 17 and not eligible for the NBA even if they get rid of the 1 and done - you still have to 18 by a certain date.
Which is a big reason why I think it's a long shot for him to consider reclassifying. The likely path is either to graduate HS and declare for the draft or be one and done in college.
Why are we just now hearing about this connection to Juwan Howard? We heard he grew up an MSU fan before he left middle school. Now there's this connection to the Fab 5 that no one knew about?
Sorry, I was told in 1993 but must have forgotten to pass the message along.
People do realize that KD is like a legit 7 footer right? Like when people say 6'8" is close to KD's height, it's really not tbh. But Bates does have the chance to grow to that height and his skill set is very similar
He just turned 15 and is already 6'8". It's almost a foregone conclusion that he'll continue to grow which is why he has the KD comparison.
He's the top ranked high school player in the country, as a sophomore. Yes please.
The predictable board Nancies aside, being the hometown club doesn’t hurt any.
Yes please
Regardless of whether he goes to Michigan or not, it's cool that Ypsi has a kid that could go #1 in the NBA draft. Go Ypsi. Hopefully he can squeeze in a year at Michigan before the pros.
The interesting part is about the Howard family connection which i was not aware of. Can someone just post the "saying there's a chance" GIF?
Come on, OP. You know better than to tell a Michigan fan to get his or her hopes up. That can only end badly.
I dunno... the offer thing is a little ridiculous. Everyone know's you're the best player in your class and you want offers to make you feel good? He's not going to play college ball. As soon as he does say he's playing college ball for sure, he'll have every offer he wants.
Ok, I'll bite. I've now got my hopes up.
Awaiting next instructions...
So, you're saying there's a chance. Absolutely, Juwan Howard should recruit him in the oft chance he decides to play one year of college. The payoff is so huge, Michigan should not ignore him. Even for one year, a player like Bates can propel a team to another level. For Michigan it could be the difference between winning a Big Ten title or not winning it. Or, it could be the difference between a Sweet 16 finish and an NCAA finals appearance. Howard has the easiest ability to recruit him too, due to close proximity. I sure hope he issues an offer to him soon.
I thought I saw that Bates had previously said (or maybe it was his dad or someone close to him) that he’d be headed straight to the NBA if the NBA gets rid of 1-and-done. I think colleges view him that way already which is why there is not as much interest in him from college coaches as his talent would dictate.
