OT: Accidental discovery could save coral reefs
Ok, if it's not officially OT season strike me dead with a rusty hammer. Thought I'd share this amazing discovery that will have huge benefits for the health of the world's oceans.

*starts looking for rusty hammer*
December 6th, 2018 at 1:10 PM ^
I have one you can borrow.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:14 PM ^
You can use mine!
December 6th, 2018 at 1:41 PM ^
That's where my hammer went. Now I know why my dad locked his toolbox.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:43 PM ^
When my brother and I were younger, we'd constantly steal my dads tools to build forts in the woods behind our home. To this day, he still finds rusted tools strewn about the fort ruins he bumps into throughout the woods. Everytime he comes down to visit the grandkids, he attempts to talk my 3 and 5-year-old into throwing my tools into the pool as retribution.
I get it.
December 6th, 2018 at 4:17 PM ^
My dad also locked his tool box, but for a different reason. In first grade I took apart the stove and fridge to the point where they needed a repairman to reassemble.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:05 PM ^
I have a couple of those. I have kids that like to play real life Minecraft with my tools and leave them out in the front yard.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:27 PM ^
I'd take that for my kids any day over *actual* minecraft.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:19 PM ^
Kids and wives are why we can’t have nice tool-things. Cuz it’s hard to put something back where they found it.
December 6th, 2018 at 3:37 PM ^
So true. I have to go on a treasure hunt to find my tools after being "borrowed" by the wife and/or kids. How hard is it to put them back when you're done?
December 6th, 2018 at 3:57 PM ^
Between this and not turning the god damn lights off when they leave a room made the little hair I have left go grey.
Wonder if there was a precise moment in time where the transformation into my dad was complete?
December 6th, 2018 at 4:51 PM ^
My wife may be worse that the kids were in terms of scattering tools across the house and countryside.
December 6th, 2018 at 6:23 PM ^
So get your wife her own tools and tool box. Gives you an excuse to go buy tools and keeps your tools in your tool box.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:07 PM ^
it isn't difficult to link.... it really isn't....
December 6th, 2018 at 1:50 PM ^
It is though. Everything about this new site is difficult, especially from a phone.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:40 PM ^
The confusion is because the instructions on how to link are wrong. See the last line of this page -- it says that links are automatically created, which is obviously not true.
- "Web page addresses and email addresses turn into links automatically."

Here is a non-Facebook link:

"Scientist's accidental discovery makes coral grow 40x faster"

The new site BLOWS (whitespace, indexing, threading, and so on). MGoBlog on the Usenet would be an improvement over this version.
Never used it from a phone.
Linking involves clicking the third button from the left, the one with the picture of the links on it. That's difficult?
December 6th, 2018 at 1:08 PM ^
It's a slow period, there's almost no content on the site and frankly, this is interesting. Thanks for sharing.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:09 PM ^
Would this qualify for a new category - perhaps "Double OT"?
Not as bad as "The Bachelor" thread during the two week hiatus before the Big Ten Basketball tourney - but damn...
December 6th, 2018 at 1:13 PM ^
Speaking of that (well, not that, but..), I do enjoy the occasional threads on here about "what are you watching" and so on. We have not had one of those in a while.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:22 PM ^
If you haven't tried "Ozark" on Netflix - do it. Awesome. Just starting "The Sinner" - seems pretty good so far.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:26 PM ^
"The Sinner" was really good. I tend to binge watch shows so I try to avoid those with only one season but that one was worth it.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:33 PM ^
The Sinner has a second season. Completely different story line. Solid, but not as good as the first season.
December 6th, 2018 at 5:33 PM ^
It does but I was talking about being on Netflix. Between work and grad school I don’t have much time to catch tv as it airs so I turn in Netflix and watch random shows when I get some free time.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:27 PM ^
Oh I've tried Ozark and it is in deed awesome.
The first season of The Sinner is pretty damn good and genuinely disturbing at times. It is really good but you are also kind of relieved once it is over.
Watched the first episode of Bodyguard on Netflix yesterday. Sucked. I have been told it is really good though so I am going to stick with it.
Lastly, for those who have not gotten over the "lol you can't be serious" and still have not watched Cobra Kai. It is actually good and worth watching.
Edit- To Bambam: The Sinner now has a second season and it got strong reviews (I have not watched it yet) so maybe check that out.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:43 PM ^
I lurrved Bodyguard until Rob Stark started sleeping with the women he was supposed to be protecting. I tapped out shortly after.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:45 PM ^
I still can't believe he survived the Red Wedding. That looked pretty bad.
December 6th, 2018 at 11:37 PM ^
Damn you. Spoiled it for me. I should have never read this thread.

I'm watching this Cambodian dude build pools and underwater huts by hand:

I have tried TV shows lately and nothing appeals to me as the writing and acting tend to be very very bad.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
I agree with you that, on balance, the writing is suffering on a lot of TV shows lately. People are far more interested right now in having a boatload of content to watch at any given setting than they are in the real quality of what they are watching. Netflix and Amazon shows are particularly guilty of this, IMO, given the binging format of their releases. Ozark is an exception, but in that case somewhat lackluster writing is made up for by fantastic lead performances.
Not surprisingly, the most well written shows right now (Better Call Saul, Westworld, as a couple of examples) are still shows airing week to week that need to hold up in somebody's mind over the course of time instead of just as TV gluttony.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:17 PM ^
I think you are right. There is still good stuff out there but I am the type who usually tries something after people rave about it for a while, so I won't know until there are a few seasons out there. Plus, I am too restless to sit and watch something for several hours so when I find something, I end up watching one episode at a time.
December 6th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
I got you bro.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:10 PM ^
I say we grind up coral reefs and use them to fuel factories.
Way better use of resources.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:17 PM ^
Everybody hates zebra muscles for how they cut your feet when you step on them, but nobody wants to talk about how coral reefs do the same.
Fuck coral reefs, I hope they die.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:21 PM ^
While we're at it
December 6th, 2018 at 1:26 PM ^
You gotta nuke something
December 6th, 2018 at 5:51 PM ^
That's what Ukraine is for.
December 6th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
Looks like blasting them with subsonic waves is the best we can do right now.
December 6th, 2018 at 4:18 PM ^
Nuke the unborn gay baby whales!
There, that ought to piss off just about everyone.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
If zebras didn't have muscles, they couldn't run away from predators.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:41 PM ^
I know right? The only use for coral reef is walking on it and there are much better things to walk on.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:12 PM ^
I wish this video explained the science. Why would a coral that was broken grow faster than a coral that was unbroken when they are the same size? Mgobiologist help? Is there a paper published on this?
December 6th, 2018 at 1:17 PM ^
Agreed.
This is a fantastic discovery but it is difficult to grasp why this is happening. Did it really take this long for someone to notice this behavior?
Regardless, I think that posting something that could be this revolutionary in saving the world's coral reefs is more than worthy of a single post on this board.
Thanks for sharing this, OP.

You may want to check over at the RCMB - those geniuses just finished a long discussion on the importance of tropical rainforests, and their long-term impact on the environment and global warming. Just ignore the bad spelling...

There speeling and youse of thee englesh languag is jest finne.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
To be fair, they did have a thread about Christmas reefs
December 6th, 2018 at 2:14 PM ^
Dang it I just spit out my coffee. "Christmas reefs". Lol
December 6th, 2018 at 1:46 PM ^
They're probably unwittingly citing Michigan publications. That's gonna piss them off.
December 6th, 2018 at 1:22 PM ^
There is a Ted Talk by the same guy with a little more detail, but still not seeing why this works.
