Beilein, Chris Webber in talks for return to Crisler
“There’s been some discussion on that, yeah,” said U-M coach John Beilein when asked if he had plans to meet with Webber and discuss a reunion between the former star and the program. “And so I don’t know how much Chris wants me to say, but we hope we can get together this weekend.”

I’d love to see Marty turco be honorary captain for a game. Would be nice if jim showed some love to the hockey program. Red would be a good one but I don’t know how he’s holding up
November 1st, 2018 at 4:20 PM ^
Red would receive a LOUD standing ovation. That's a good idea.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:14 PM ^
Drop a hint around the building!!
November 1st, 2018 at 4:53 PM ^
I saw Red at Yost for the WMU game a couple weeks ago and he looked to be holding up quite well.
November 1st, 2018 at 7:40 PM ^
Marty was honored at the SMU game when he got inducted into the Hall of Honor. He didn't come to the game.

"There’s nothing I would want more than that,” Webber said. “I think that we’re on the right path for that. I think there has to be conversation, organically. People were pushing it for money because of that (ESPN) doc, but you have to be sincere, address and then move forward because all the other stuff is still going to be there."
....and I would make sure I was there. That would be awesome to see all of them in Crisler again....FINALLY.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:39 PM ^
I wonder what he means by sincere.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:23 PM ^
Maybe he will apologize and wants people to know he's sincere??? Not sure, it looks like he chose his words carefully.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:35 PM ^
Why do u have to nick pick every detail? He’s putting forth the effort and wants to move forward anyone against this can stay at home
November 1st, 2018 at 7:46 PM ^
I'm fine if he's looking to apologize for his part in it all. I think it's BS the NCAA continues to take advantange of athletes, but Webber has always acted like he didn't break the rules and that UM owed him more respect for the Fab 5. And that's not true. You can hate the rule but if you break it and you know about it, I have limited sympathy for you on that front. And he lied to a grand jury about it all, and really at no point has come clean with his role. Which is his perogative and I don't think should preclude him from being an honorary captain. But he isn't coming back as some conquering hero who did no wrong, at least in my eyes, and this comment feels like a continuation of his aggrieved schtick that got old years ago. Though if not, I'd be happy to be wrong.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:15 PM ^
Yes please. So sad that one of the most recognizable faces in Michigan athletics isn't around the program.
There's going to be a ton of recruits around this weekend including the 5-star Center from Georgia. If you're at the game and inclined to boo Webber, please just shut your sad, bitter, old face.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:20 PM ^
They were around just before I was born and I wasn’t old enough to really grasp the ed Martin stuff. I had heard about them from what my dad told me. He mostly talked about glen rice who is still one of my favorite players ever. He mentioned the fab 5 and I couldn’t grasp why they were so big if they didn’t win, then I watched the espn doc and fell in love with their play and attitude. I thought Michigan was always bad at basketball except 1989. If I were going I’d give C-Webb the loudest cheer.
November 1st, 2018 at 10:37 PM ^
Sorry you missed it. They were truly amazing!
November 1st, 2018 at 4:21 PM ^
I just don't think anyone will boo, but you never know.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:30 PM ^
Anyone who boos deserves an ice cold water down their shirt.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
Anyone who assaults someone else for expressing their opinion deserves to be in jail.
I have no interest in seeing Chris Webber reunited with the Michigan program, and I know I’m not alone in that. He cheated; full stop. His conduct led directly to the darkest period in Michigan’s NCAA basketball history, and he doesn’t even seem apologetic.
If this were another player at another school, we’d be laughing at their elastic morality.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:50 PM ^
Exactly how high is that horse you're on? The "RULEZ IZ RULEZ" crowd really bugs the shit out of me when it comes to stuff like this. Did he cheat, as you say? I mean, sure, they took some money they weren't supposed to have. But they didn't cheat at the game. Get outta here with that crap.
November 1st, 2018 at 6:51 PM ^
" I mean, sure, they took some money they weren't supposed to have. But they didn't cheat at the game."
Exactly, which is why people around here need to stop moaning about SEC bagmen. Right?
November 1st, 2018 at 5:08 PM ^
The NCAA is a corrupt joke.
We would've been fine if we didn't make the worst coaching hire possible after firing Fisher.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
J.
I’m willing to guess you know absolutely nothing about what really happened.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:26 PM ^
If this were another player at another school, no one would even be talking about it because it's not interesting to anyone who isn't a pretty serious fan of the school.
Do you happen to know if Troy Smith has been honored by Ohio State at any point over the last decade? I don't, because that's not even interesting news for me. If you told me they have honored him, I don't judge the fans who supported it. (And not in the "what else would you expect from Ohio" sort of way.)
We're not talking about honoring Joe Paterno here. It's a basketball player who got some money.
Do I wish he would have handled it differently? You bet. Am I morally outraged? Not even a little tiny bit.

You stay home
November 1st, 2018 at 6:52 PM ^
Webber paid his dues and then some. This isnt like Tressel being paraded out at OSU a couple years after he was cheating.
The darkest period in our history was largely self inflicted. Look at Penn State football or OSU football. They overcame their punishment very fast. That could have been us if not for Brian Ellerbe and MSC.
November 1st, 2018 at 8:18 PM ^
"Webber paid his dues and then some."
Chris Webber made many millions of dollars in his career, perhaps totaling more than 170 million of them.
What, exactly, are the "dues" he "paid?"
November 1st, 2018 at 8:17 PM ^
Oh, come on. They were kids or at least very young men. He’s done his penance. Let’s welcome him home.
November 1st, 2018 at 8:25 PM ^
"He’s done his penance."
When did he do that? And what was it that he was doing penance for?
November 1st, 2018 at 10:32 PM ^
Or a nice warm stream of "lemonade" on their leg.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
I hope you're right, but I also hear middle-aged men who have never accomplished anything athletically boo teenagers in our stadium almost every season.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
Nobody is gonna boo C-webb. Nobody.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:13 PM ^
I hear adults boo children all the time at Michigan Stadium - I'd like to think our fanbase is better than that, but I'm not naive.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:33 PM ^
...Children?
.. We finally offered an 8th header like Saban?!
November 1st, 2018 at 5:59 PM ^
Teenagers are children. Hell you're still a child in your early 20s, too.
November 1st, 2018 at 7:47 PM ^
During the off season. 6'3" 215 LBer. Had 100+ tackles as an eighth grader playing varsity. His name is Tyler Martin.

This is awesome.

Fuck yes. Let's bury the fucking hatchet already and make the fab 5 whole again. Fuck. Fuckin A, let's make this happen. I'd be so fuckin excited... damn. Fuck!
November 1st, 2018 at 4:51 PM ^
Could not have said it better myself... I would fork up big time doll hairs to see this in person...
November 1st, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
I couldn’t care less. It happened a long time ago, end the drama, and move on.
November 1st, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
I have zero fucks to give and would be just find if I never heard Webber's "return" mentioned again.
November 1st, 2018 at 7:09 PM ^
Where did all your fucks go? Would you give them if you had any?
November 1st, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
This has been a long, long road to repairing the rift. It's amazing how many times the "reunion" (not just Fab 5, but school + Webb) has almost happened only to be derailed out of the blue by random events. Fingers crossed all goes well this time.
Bottom line - Webb wants to be back; Michigan wants him back; and arguably the best player ever to hoop in A2 needs to be a part of the Michigan family again.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:02 PM ^
Depends on the criteria but I would argue that by many measures Cazzie Russell would be the best all time basketball player at Michigan.

November 2nd, 2018 at 12:23 AM ^
Fine with Cazzie, but Glen Rise was pretty darn good.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:01 PM ^
Best hands I've seen in a big. Get that man to Crisler dammit.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:21 PM ^
I'm down with this. If the fab five ordeal was the biggest "black mark" in history of the athletic dept, after seeing the heinous activities at literally every other school in the B1G East, I'll take unpaid college kids getting a little pocket money they maybe shouldn't have had any day of the week.
November 1st, 2018 at 5:27 PM ^
People who still hold a grudge against Chris need to step away from the echo chamber and grow the fuck up. Life is short, he was a kid, and only the most heinous crimes are beyond redemption. It's taken far too long to heal this wound.
