This Month in MGoBlog History: September 2008 - The Football Team goes 2-1 (that's the most positive headline I can come up with)
Previously:
On August 30, Utah beat Michigan 25-23. Highlights.
September 1 - Monday
Notes from Rodriguez’s press conference, including injuries to the WR depth chart.
Monday Recruitin’. Lots of news here. FL LB Brandin Hawthorne and RB Vincent Smith and CA QB Tate Forcier have committed. AZ DE Craig Roah has visited and likes what he saw. Most importantly! Will Campbell as Thor photo.
Unverified Voracity is Talking Like This. Brian goes after Jerry Green for using words that show his age.
September 2 - Tuesday
Brian brings back You’re on Notice. This feature was gone for the last season or two.
RB Mike Cox is rumored to be transferring.
September 3 - Wednesday
Transfer update. Mike Cox is staying, but LB Taylor Hill is going.
Brian tries to figure out what happened to the O-Line. Also fun fights in the comments.
Mailbag. How many early enrollees? How quickly can recruiting fix this? Why doesn’t Barwis work with the basketball team?
LB Marcus Witherspoon has not been cleared by the clearinghouse.
September 4 - Thursday
What does it mean for Miami and the rest of the season?
It means we’re in for a long year.
Unverified Voracity Tasers Some Emu. Maybe ‘M’ isn’t so good about figuring if freshman will get academically cleared by or not.
September 5 - Friday
Finally, three opportunities for me to look stupid Sunday:
Threet starts and plays most of the game; Sheridan sees a couple series here and there.
Tim Jamison gets two sacks.
Michigan’s run game is at least passable.
Michigan, 24-13.
September 6 - Saturday
Michigan beat Miami (Ohio) 16-6. Highlights.
September 8 - Monday
Game two was a virtual replay of game one minus some opponent competence, and does little to reassure that Michigan isn’t going to struggle its way towards a rinky-dink bowl that won’t actually be in Shreveport but might as well be.
LT Mark Ortmann was injured during the game. His replacement was walk-on Bryant Nowicki.
The next opponent is Notre Dame who just barely beat a San Diego St. team that finished the season with two wins. So this shouldn’t be too bad.
September 9 - Tuesday
Muppets! The videos are found and united for the first time. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for anything special that an athletic team did.
Tuesday Recruitin’. Big news, Will Campbell has decommitted.
Unverified Voracity Groks Namibia.
September 10 - Wednesday
UFR: Defense vs. Miami. Brandon Graham was the highest rated with +11. Stevie Brown was the lowest with -4.
September 11 - Thursday
Vicious Electronic Questioning with House Rock Built.
Liveblog for Shavodrick Beaver’s high school game.
September 12 - Friday
Unverified Voracity Leaps Over Leapers. Lots more ND notes, including that the weather forecast says there are supposed to be high winds and thunderstorms on Saturday.
Game preview: Notre Dame.
Finally, three opportunities for me to look stupid Sunday:
Yes, we do complete a long pass. To Hemingway, even.
Shaw and McGuffie get more evenly distributed carries.
Michigan gets to Clausen five times.
Michigan, 13-10.
Hello: Anthony LaLota. The OT/DE from New Jersey is a five star to Scout.
September 13 - Saturday
Live Blog Chaos Mitigation Post. Basically how to comment well in a live blog so that your comments get published. It’s weird though because there are reference to “Death Roh” (who hasn’t committed yet) and “Shoelace” (who isn’t even on the radar). I assume this was reused several times in the next couple of years, but it’s preserved here, even with the future references.
Open Thread: Notre Dame
Notre Dame beat Michigan 35-17. Highlights.
September 15 - Monday
Game column: Notre Dame. ‘M’ lost four fumbles for the first time since 1995. Nick Sheridan was 3-5 with two picks.
Rodriguez presser notes, mostly about injuries and redshirts.
September 16 - Tuesday
Tuesday Recruitin’. FL QB Denard Robinson has been added to the board.
Unverified Voracity Stays in Like Whoa. Iowa beat Iowa State, but at the end their players were telling their own fans to be quiet.
September 17 - Wednesday
Mailbag covering: why are the QBs clapping before the snap? (Brian wants to know too), are too many 3-star, tiny RB/WR types being recruited? And what is there to do around Ann Arbor on gameday? Also, ‘M’ is giving up way too many yards on punts.
September 18 - Thursday
Unverified Voracity has a Deal for You. AZ DE Craig Roh is going to announce tonight on ESPNU. Sam Webb is very confident.
On Notice week 3.
MGoBlog produced a Bo shirt, but now a Bo foundation is threatening legal action for using his likeness. Unfortunately, there are a number of people who have already paid, but haven’t gotten their shirt yet.
September 19 - Friday
Unverified Voracity Veins Veins Veins. Brian has veins rupturing because of Bill Stewart’s time management at WVU.
OMG (apparently) PANTSLESS Terrance Robinson.
September 22 - Monday
Details of Rodriguez’s legal settlement with WVU have come out. Details don’t fit the media’s narrative from this summer.
Brian visited Auburn for the LSU game. Here are a few highlights:
I defy you to find another activity outside of speaking-in-tongues-style Christianity that can cause large masses of people to say "bodda getta, bodda getta, bodda getta bah." All of this should be prefaced with that truth. College football is awesome.
I sit in one of the oldest, lamest sections of Michigan Stadium and I personally guarantee you that if Michigan was up one with six minutes left and the other team had the ball, the section would be on their feet, gurgling out whatever noises their suppurating intestines could manage. This was a game-long issue. The noise levels in my immediate vicinity were no louder than I am used to. Maybe it's an upper deck thing.
September 23 - Tuesday
Tuesday Recruitin’. SC OL Quinton Washington and FL S Vladimir Emilien are looking good for ‘M’. Also, top 2010 FL WR Ricardo Miller likes Michigan a lot.
Unverified Voracity Knows Numbers.
Picture Pages: Getting Thumped.
September 24 - Wednesday
September 25 - Thursday
A mailbag just covering Brian’s trip to Auburn.
I did notice the sundresses. They were mostly shapeless items that made the wearer look a little like they were wearing a burlap sack with a couple spectacular exceptions.
UFR: Defense vs. Notre Dame. Terrance Taylor led the team with a 3.5, and Johnny Thompson was the lowest with a -6.
Unverified Voracity Speaks. It sounds like LT Mark Ortman should be ready to play against Wisconsin on Saturday.
September 26 - Friday
Vicious Electronic Questioning: Wisconsin.
Game Preview: Wisconsin.
Finally, three opportunities for me to look stupid Sunday:
Threet throws at least one ugly interception.
The defensive line returns to its rampant ways in the pass rush.
Wisconsin, 24-17.
September 27 - Saturday
Open Thread: Wisconsin.
Michigan beat Wisconsin 27-25. WH Highlights.
September 29 - Monday
Apparently, people still used Internet Explorer in 2008. Brian is having problems.
Did Rodriguez make the right decision going for two after Johnny Thompson’s interception? Yes, of course.
As I was walking home these guys behind me were having an extended conversation about how Rodriguez was dumb to go for two. One: they were wrong. Two: seriously? Seriously this is what you're focusing on instead of one of the best games in Michigan Stadium history? It must suck to be those guys.
Those guys at the 1997 OSU game: "It should never have been that close."
Those guys at the birth of their children: "he has a disappointingly shaped head, did you have to push so hard?"
Unverified Voracity Recaps Woo.
September 30 - Tuesday
Tuesday Recruitin’. MD LB Jelani Jenkins and LA WR Rueben Randle are hot names on the board right now.
Hello: Ricardo Miller. Crazy that there were no rankings for a 2010 recruit at this point.
October 8th, 2018 at 10:11 PM ^
My apologies for the delay on this, but I'm guessing there aren't many who are ready to relive this month. October is about half done, so hopefully that'll be ready in a week or so.
October 9th, 2018 at 10:09 AM ^
As far as I'm concerned, you can skip the whole 2008 season and move on the 2009 early or maybe create your own version of what MGoBlog would have been like in 1998. Of course, that season kicked off with some pain as I recall, but Tom Brady was on that team.
October 10th, 2018 at 7:14 PM ^
Eh, 2009 started well (4-0) then got really, really bleak. We were actually worse in league play that year (1-7) than in '08 (2-6).
October 8th, 2018 at 11:03 PM ^
Wow is that O Line post ominous. Michigan has since produced one offensive line since then that most of us have been happy with. One. That's not good.
Also, that Muppets post undersells it: Brian actually says, "I am going to make these an institution here." Perhaps his most accurate prediction ever.
October 9th, 2018 at 1:19 PM ^
Good point. I'm interested to see when they're used next. Maybe a basketball win over MSU? Maybe a commit - Gardner or Dorsey?
October 9th, 2018 at 3:34 PM ^
Also, that Muppets post undersells it: Brian actually says, "I am going to make these an institution here." Perhaps his most accurate prediction ever.
Where does he say that?
October 9th, 2018 at 4:21 PM ^
Click through the link under the entry for September 9.
October 9th, 2018 at 5:10 PM ^
Ah, I missed the first post about them. I knew the first celebratory usage of Muppets was after '08 Wisconsin.
October 8th, 2018 at 11:42 PM ^
It's always interesting seeing all the posters who have obviously moved on to more constructive uses of their time...and then the occasional old-timer.
October 12th, 2018 at 10:13 PM ^
Wait, what? There's a more constructive use of my time? Pshaw. This is like the best college-level seminar course -- uniting current events, history, popular culture, and in-depth analysis. Feels like continuing ed.
October 9th, 2018 at 1:57 AM ^
Couple of interesting plays from the Wisconsin game ->
a. Threet finding an open receiver in the 3rd Q for easy 6-7 yds.
b. Brandon Minor running untouched after the OL caved in the DL for the second TD
c. Couple of Threet scrambles
d. Macguffie following the blocks for the fourth TD
Oh boy!
October 9th, 2018 at 7:37 AM ^
Pain reminds you that you are alive... right?
October 9th, 2018 at 8:55 AM ^
You can get away with either your OL or your quarterback sucking, but not both.
From the Utah UFR. Boy, did we relearn that lesson last year.
October 9th, 2018 at 3:01 PM ^
In the context of how the next three years went, that 2008 Utah game looks a lot different now. Michigan had several chances to win, Utah kept turning it over. There was a tremendous amount of talent on the defense (squandered). If Threet starts that game, Michigan wins.
October 9th, 2018 at 5:50 PM ^
And that Utah team went 12-0!
October 9th, 2018 at 11:24 PM ^
which includes beating a Saban Alabama team in a BCS bowl game!
October 10th, 2018 at 1:50 AM ^
This is actually a very cool post for me. I totally didn't know that my first Michigan game was not only one of the best in Stadium history, but actually the first one that was capped off with a Muppet Celebration!
It was about a year ahead of my reading of this blog, but little did I know I had more of a cosmic connection to it than ever. My favorite tradition of this blog that has spanned my time on it was created when my love of Michigan Football itself was fully solidified. Wow.
October 10th, 2018 at 9:10 AM ^
Look at the FULL student sections!!
October 10th, 2018 at 2:42 PM ^
As we relive the pain of 2008-2014 (i.e. the next SIX FUCKING YEARS) of This Month...
I suggest that we re-appreciate one Denard Robinson. In this, his first month on the MGoBlog radar, he was characterized as "being recruited for quarterback-plus-other-options" and "seems unlikely".
This was how Brian, who named a child after him, first introduced us to Denard: exists, might be a QB, long shot.
I love you Denard, and I miss you.
October 10th, 2018 at 7:17 PM ^
On the bright side, there was some fun in basketball/hockey those years.
