Grant Newsome Retires
[Bryan Fuller]
The writing was on the wall for this one for a long time and now it is official:
Breaking News: Grant Newsome Medically Retires - Announced today during @CoachJim4UM's Attack Each Day Podcast. Full interview on the podcast tomorrow at 8am. Also more on @michiganinsider and TMI. Young man will undoubtedly do big things off the field - https://t.co/R4WFBh60Mb pic.twitter.com/D0gyVPT99z

Newsome nearly lost his leg after a defensive back decided to cut him once he rumbled to the edge. That's a perfectly legal play that probably shouldn't be legal. Newsome's statement:

Michigan had to know that Newsome's return was a distant possibility for a while, and has been preparing as if he would not return for some time. Getting him back would have been a bonus; as it is Jon Runyan and appears to be locking down the left tackle job, with Jaylen Mayfield and Andrew Stueber pushing from behind, and a JBB-Hudson battle on the right side.

I has all the sads. GN will be a success in any avenue he chooses. Godspeed.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:41 PM ^
Well. Not a dry eye in the house after reading that statement. Excited for his future.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:43 PM ^
According to Sam the JBB-Hudson battle is for RT and in his opinion is currently Hudson and likely to stay that way.
August 20th, 2018 at 4:10 PM ^
UMBig11 said the same in a comment earlier today.
August 20th, 2018 at 4:15 PM ^
I edited that as soon as it was posted.

Tough news, but Grant overflows with class, intelligence and grace. Good for him, and we are lucky to have such a wonderful ambassador for our university.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:45 PM ^
I wish him the best. A great example of why you should choose your college first on academics vs. football playing career. Even the best athletes, and Grant certainly was that, will spend more time not playing football vs. playing football.

You may recall, after Hoke was fired Newsome was asked if it would change his commitment. His reply was, "I committed to the University of Michigan, not the University of Brady Hoke".
August 20th, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
As a former California expat I thank you for that reminder. Just adds a bit more sadness to the situation.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:46 PM ^
Tough, tough result for Newsome. I really admire how hard he worked in rehab, but some injuries are still just too much.
Regarding the tackle battle: Most of the stuff I've seen in the last week has Runyan out left, with JBB and Hudson battling at RT (and the stuff being collated today suggests that Hudson has the lead, which is really big news if true; all of the things I "see" are things accessible to people on here, including stuff in the thread about Patterson apparently being the starter).
There have obviously been some problems with tackle development and recruiting in the Harbaugh years, but Newsome's horrible injury was something nobody could have predicted, and it's too bad.
I love how he ends his note, though. Well-written.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:47 PM ^
Grant, you are an inspiration for us all, and a much needed lesson for me and my kids on perseverence. Thank you.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:47 PM ^
Hudson is now in the lead according to Sam.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:58 PM ^
at Right Tackle.
Runyan beating Mayfield at left tackle.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:48 PM ^
Grant Newsome oozes class from every pore.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:49 PM ^
Part of me is sad. He was a great talent. Part of me is happy that he went to UM, is on track for a great degree, and can start his other non football life sooner. The kid is flat out smart and will do great things.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:49 PM ^
That's a very touching statement. Best wishes to him.

That injury amounts to maybe the most significant what-if scenario of the Harbaugh years.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:13 PM ^
Is Grant Newsome the new Antonio Bass?
August 20th, 2018 at 2:53 PM ^
What an excellent, well-written letter, and what a class act.
Grant Newsome, if you're looking for a job and willing to relocate to Denver, we would hire you immediately. The world needs more of you.
August 20th, 2018 at 2:54 PM ^
This guy is such a talented person it almost seems his football ability is a distraction to whatever he'll accomplish off the field. Obviously, we were all rooting for him to play again because that's what he wanted, but I'm also excited for him to tackle the next stage of his life full time. He's going to make us all proud.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:05 PM ^
That is an incredible letter. We will miss seeing #77 in a football comeback, but the future is possibly even brighter for Grant Newsome. I believe we will see him in a higher calling one day, serving the needs of a local community, or state workings or even on the national stage bringing that winning attitude to tackle the big issues of our time. Retired from football, but just beginning his destiny. Good luck Grant Newsome and Go Blue !!!
August 20th, 2018 at 3:09 PM ^
Grant is an incredible young man. Football was only going to be a 10-15 year diversion before he leaves a significant mark on this world. This tragedy gives him a different level of empathy and humility that will allow him to do perhaps even greater things - and sooner.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:12 PM ^
Can I get a HELL YEAH for gratitude and ambition to improve the world? These priorities are available to all of us everyday. Reminders help. Thank you Grant!
August 20th, 2018 at 3:13 PM ^
Not a surprise, but still sad. Hope the nerve heals back eventually and hope he makes good use of his UM degree, he's a smart kid so I know he will.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:16 PM ^
Bummed, but not shocked. I look forward to voting for Grant for president some day, dude is just an A+ person.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:23 PM ^
If you didn't read the statement, go and read it. He's an amazing young man.

Thankful for what Grant Newsome gave to his team and us fans when he was on the field. Grateful for what he has already given and what he is sure to contribute to the world off of it.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:32 PM ^
Michigan Man, through and through.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
"Probably" shouldn't be legal? It's illegal for the linemen to do it to defenders in most cases, so I don't see why it should be OK for defenders to do it to linemen.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:41 PM ^
i'm just glad he is walking and didn't lose his leg and is receiving a degree from the University of Michigan. Go Blue!
August 20th, 2018 at 3:45 PM ^
Just read his statement. This is so heart-wrenching. Really moving words
August 20th, 2018 at 3:46 PM ^
I remember when Grant came in that he said getting a degree in history from Michigan was a big part of his decision to commit and stand by it during the ensuing turmoil. I have a feeling he may just be Professor Newsome before we know it and represent well what it is to be a Michigan Man.
August 20th, 2018 at 3:49 PM ^
Grant you are the epitome of high character and class. You will be successful in any endeavor. Thanks for your contributions to the team, the university, and best wishes for your future!
August 20th, 2018 at 3:54 PM ^
That my friend, IS what being a MICHIGAN MAN is all about. Great statement. My heart breaks for him.
Wish you much success in what ever you pursue in the future Grant. Your story is still yet to be written. Good luck and GO BLUE!
*Wish I could embed statement here*

Number 77 greats:
Jon Jansen
Jake Long
Taylor Lewan
Grant Newsome- Yup. He belongs among them. Sometimes it's about more than just what happens on the field.
August 20th, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
Agreed, and add Larry Prout Jr. to that list.
August 20th, 2018 at 4:07 PM ^
*wipes tear from eye* Very inspiring - what a fine young man. Good luck, Grant!
August 20th, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^
Great letter. He will go far in whatever he chooses.

*Future President Grant Newsome

August 20th, 2018 at 4:17 PM ^
Best of luck, and sincere thank you for sharing your story and spirit.
Young men like this are why I love Michigan sports. I'm proud that our school and athletic department recruit and develop so many outstanding young people.
Grant Newsome, you sir are among the Leaders and Best.
August 20th, 2018 at 4:25 PM ^
Sad day. Here's to success in life outside of football.
August 20th, 2018 at 4:37 PM ^
That's a really well done statement, no surprise from someone as measured and well spoken as Grant Newsome. The young man has unlimited potential and I look forward to voting for him for President in 2038 or so.
August 20th, 2018 at 5:01 PM ^
What an impressive young man. It’s sad that he won’t be able to realize his football dreams, but as he has the maturity to realize, even as he deals with this tremendous disappointment, there’s much more to life than football. I’m sure he’ll be successful in whatever else he chooses to do.
August 20th, 2018 at 5:51 PM ^
Go Grant. Best of luck in all.
August 20th, 2018 at 6:45 PM ^
Best of luck off the field to a great Michigan Man!
August 20th, 2018 at 9:06 PM ^
Vaya con dios, Grant.
May the road rise with you.
August 20th, 2018 at 9:17 PM ^
Grant seems like a champion in real life. Will never forget the sickening play with the helmet on Grant's knee, and Grant walking into the tunnel after. God speed Grant. Very classy announcement letter.
August 20th, 2018 at 9:19 PM ^
Sorry for double post.
August 20th, 2018 at 9:25 PM ^
Was hoping to see Grant on the field again if only to give him the loudest cheer ever heard in the Big House. Football talent cut short, but there will be nothing but success in his non-football career.
