OT: Lollapalooza 2012 Lineup Announced
http://lineup.lollapalooza.com/
Headliners include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Black Sabbath (lolwut), and The Black Keys. There are quite a few of the "minor"/non-headliner acts I'm very interested in seeing; Justice, Franz Ferdinand, The Temper Trap, Of Monsters and Men, Band of Skulls, Little Dragon and SBTRKT, Wale, and maybe Florence + the Machine (and quite a few more). I saw RHCP back in '06 so I'd maybe see them again but with John Frusciante gone I don't know if they're the "same band".
Anywho, what's everyone's thoughts on music festivals? Anybody plan on going to Lollapalooza, ever attended, attended and hated it and will never do it again?!?

Lolla is deciding not to give Indie fans the finger this year. Excellent. Last year's lineup was atrocious.

I thought last years lineup was good as far as the indie music the girlfriend exposes me to: Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Cage the Elephant, Manchester Orchestra...KiD CuDi was there too, although he's really blown up.

part of it is that I dislike both Bright Eyes and Arctic Monkeys, but 2010 had, like, the National and Arcade Fire back to back, and last year just didn't have anyone like that.

As a fan of heavier music, I thought last year's lineup was amazing, what with Mastodon and Deftones both on the bill. Couple that with My Morning Jacket, and you have three of my all-time favorite bands at one festival - plus heavy hitters like Eminem and Foo Fighters.
This year's lineup is meh for me. Oh well.

I'm a Chili Pepper fan and I saw them at Van Andel a few years back: 2/10, would not watch again. Holy shit practice a tad and put together a decent show....

Could care less about Black Sabbath, but the other Headliners are top notch.
On top of the mentions in the OP, Passion Pit, Miike Snow, The Gaslight Anthem, Sigur Ros, Toro Y Moi, The Walkmen, Tame Impala and Neon Indian are all groups I'm excited to see again live.
Great, great line-up.

Which had one of the greatest lineups I've ever heard of (Daft Punk, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pearl Jam, Black Keys, Roots, Interpol, Stooges, Modest Mouse, Femi Kuti, Patti Smith, Ted Leo, LCD, Hold Steady, Spoon, TV On the Radio, Rapture), but it's pretty good. Also excited for the Weeknd.
Would have been a great time, great lineup as you say. I was wanting very badly to go to 2008 as well but didn't make it (RATM alone would have been pretty cool). I kind of agree with you about last year, though I was happy with a few of the indie/non-headliners they had; I fell in love with The Kills last year and was excited to see them at Lolla. On the other hand I was also able to check out a few "up-and-comers"/"no-namers", who weren't very big yet, and support them.
Like your taste in music. I would probably go just for Sigur Ros and the rest is just fluff. Although, I have been chomping at the bit to see Miike Snow.
Also on there: The Shins, M83, The Tallest Man on Earth, Kevin Devine among many others. I'm not in tune with the past line ups but this is pretty sick.

I saw RHCP last week and they were absolutely fantastic. Played a lot of their older stuff too. You don't need to worry about them being the same band.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I've never been a fan of live music. Dont get me wrong, I love music, and I have the vinyl to prove it. But I've never really enjoyed concerts that much...
But that lineup is phenominal. I'd love to see: The Black Keys, Jack White, Florence and the Machine, Justice, Passionpit, The Shins, Delta Spirit, Alabama Shakes, Trampled by Turtles, Dr. Dog.

The Alabama Shakes debut album is damn good. Great blues rock record.
I ordered it on vinyl a few days ago, can't wait to listen to it... and Jack White's solo album. It is a good month for records.

I immediately bought the 3-day pass. I've been the last 2 years. Definitely fun and worth it. It's crowded, sweaty, sometimes muddy, but an event. I think I'm most excited for Florence, so that will tell you my (lack of?) taste.
Nothing wrong with Florence.
She's got pipes and they put out some good tunes.
April 11th, 2012 at 12:45 PM ^
are RHCP, Black Keys, Bassnectar, Avicii, Kaskade, Calvin Harris, Nero, J.Cole and Wale. I think I'm more likely to go to this: http://www.springawakeningfestival.com/. That'll be ridiculously crazy.
be sure to pack lots of glowsticks and e

trampled by turtles is also an awesome band...I highly recommend checking them out if you haven't already

Pretty solid auto-correct there. At least I assume your tumors aren't giving you music advice.
Blasted Android keyboard. Whatever tumors might be festering in me don't speak (yet.)
I didn't know ATDI was back together - that is fantastic!
I had to log in just to say that At the Drive-In is one of my all time favorite bands and it was always cool that they came out of el paso since not many great things come out of el paso (IMO). So excited that they're back together. I'm hoping that they stay together and possibly record something

too much hipster shit and electronica, 2009 was the best with depeche mode, tool, the killers, ben harper. i feel like everyone there this year will have skinny jeans on with thick black glasses without prescription lenses, ironic tattoos, and will be complaining about the lack of PBR and how they liked this band before it was cool.
"She got ironic tattoos on her back. That aint ironic bitch, I love Rugrats!"
Childish Gambino would be at the top of my to-see list if I was going.
the notion that the Killers are anywhere near as good as Jack White, the Black Keys, or The Shins is fucking laughable.
And im pretty sure Depeche Mode is irony incarnate.
I was hoping to see Two Door Cinema Club this year; they were my favorite out of the bunch last year. Still excited to see Neon Indian, The Shins, and Passion Pit. At the Drive-In should be interesting too! I didn't know they even played live shows anymore.
They reunited to make a run at the festivals this year.
At the Drive-In split into The Mars Volta and Sparta in 2001 and just got back together for some shows this year. Reading that news in January made my life.
Where's Lifto?
I'm contemplating on going because I couldn't go to Coachella this year.
If I go I'm excited to see:
At the Drive In, M83, Frank Ocean, The Weekd, Childish Gambino, Santigold, The Big Pink, Yoro Y Moi, Gary Clark Jr, Washed Out, Chairlift, Polica, Star Slinger, The War on Drugs.
Out of those I'm most excited about At the Drive-in, Polica and THE WEEKND. For me it is worth it just to go see The Weeknd. All you lucky Canadians get to see him many times, but I think this is the first time he will be playing in the US.
Headliners are weak as shit. Jack White's great, but 2nd billed at best.
Little Talks is just an awesome song and I'm slowly falling in love with the new album (most, not all of it). Pretty cool Icelandic band who can crank out some good sound.
I went last year for the first time in my lifetime, and it was an amazing experience. I personally liked a lot of the music last year, especially Arctic Monkeys and the Foo Fighters ended up being probably my favorite live show ever (especially when we were getting poured on).
Aside from the music though, just experiencing the atmosphere at Lollapalooza is a great time. You can pretty much find a nice area of grass, pop a squat, and just chill for a day with some music surrounding you on all sides.
As for this year, I'm excited for the lineup. I don't think the headliners have as much wow factor, but it's definitely a "deeper" lineup, if you will. I intend on making it to at least one of the days, and I highly recommend it to those who can afford it. If you're a big live music guy, considering the price it's definitely worth it.
No appearance by Tool this year?
River's Edge Music Festival in St Paul June 23-24 is apparently going to be their only US show this year.
for anyone in the Chicago area without a ton of money who wants to see the festival one way or another.
http://
Black Sabbath and The Black Keys are both awesome, I can't wait.
Additionally, Black Sabbath is going to be entertaining one way or another. I'm personally a big fan, but I'm also expecting that Ozzy forgets how to speak during Paranoid or something. So it's kind of a win-win scenario: either you get to be incredibly entertained by the sheer amazingness that Ozzy Osbourne is still alive, or maybe they legitimately play well and you can rock out.
I saw Ozzy at Ozzfest in '07 and Sabbath with Dio in '09. Both put on a far better show than 90% of the bands that are out today. Tony Iommi can play.
If Bieber's not going, I'm not going. I believe Tool is recording thier new album this spring/summer. I saw them in Dallas this year and it was sweeeettt!
I went in 2009 and 2010. Passed on 2011 because they threw the two acts I wanted to see most (Kid Cudi / Deadmau5) on Sunday night (I have a regular job, so I didn't really want to take off Monday to see a half set of each).
2009 was one of the best life experiences I have ever had. 2010 had a legit heat stroke / panic attack at Lady Gaga, but managed to keep myself upright for the Strokes set.
Overall I would say that lolla is still worth attending, but since they increased capacity in 2010, it has become a worse overall experience (much larger crowds = shittier views of each stage and much more difficult to walk from stage to stage). If you haven't been, go.
[Edit - black keys performed in 2010 (sub-headliner.. came on around 7 PM friday) and they were an AMAZING show. I knew of them at the time, but became a much bigger fan after seeing their show. They will absolutely be worth the price of admission this year.]
No Rebecca Black? Shame.
Every lineup has been a bit of a let down since I went back in 2008. Can't top the headliners of Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and Rage Against The Machine. Not just great music, but great visuals, and I've never seen anything anywhere like the energy at RATM.
