Brionte / Recruiting Thread
Haven't seen a thread about recruiting today, which is my biggest interest from now until the bowl game. Here is a LINK which quotes Brionte as saying he does not want to play in a spread offense. Not exactly new news but it is the first quote I've seen directly from him.
Any other recruiting updates?

All signs sure point toward Blue! Man I hope it happens.

FYI I cannot post yet, but new Rivals 100 is out:

Kalis 5 star.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
The last I heard (which is from last week) was that Dunn was going to take an official in December, the same weekend that Kalis is. Also, Dunn will be an early enrollee.
Pancake done, flip em.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
no one expected to commit in the next few days or anything.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:27 PM ^
If he does end up as an EE, at least we will know before signing day.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM ^
Rooted in rationality or no, I think that it will be a continuing benefit to Michigan that at least some people will think that Michigan's (future) offense will better prepare players for the pros. It will also just be a better fit for some players, Dunn being one of them.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM ^
the initial contact with Urban Meyer. We know Urban's a heckuva liar, so that's not exactly going to help us. We need to get one of our agents on a phone tap STAT.
In all seriousness though, I'm a bit worried about the emergence of Fitzkreig. Could scare off Dunn if he's hoping for an early starting role.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:25 PM ^
Even Urban said mattison is one of the best recruiters in the country.
And if anything, the emergence of Fitz should ENCOURAGE him, since he's the first 1,000 yard RB UM has had since Hart. Encouraging when you think Denard also has 1,000, so once he graduates there will be more touches to go around.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:41 PM ^
Yeah, I highly doubt Fitz's recent performance has done anything but help Michigan's chances with Dunn. If he was scared of competition, he wouldn't have committed to OSU when Warren Ball—a 2012 RB who's nearly as highly-rated as Dunn—was already in the fold for the Buckeyes. Michigan's RB situation from a depth perspective—even with the emergence of Toussaint—is more conducive to early playing time and a future role as the featured, workhorse back. I think Dunn would come in next year and get 5-10 touches a game as the primary backup, and his role would only expand from there.
All signs point to Michigan in this one. Not saying it's a done deal, but hiring Meyer may have eliminated whatever shot OSU had left of retaining Dunn. Dunn won't play in a spread, and while Meyer will try to sell him on the program and his system, I don't think he can deny that he's going to run a spread—that's what he does, period.

Am I correct in assuming the dead period for recruiting has been lifted? Any word on expected at home visits by the Hoke and Co.?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:52 PM ^
I would imagine it is lifted after next weeks games.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
The in-season "quiet period" actually ended yesterday, and we're now in a "contact period" until January 28th, with a couple of brief dead periods in there for the holidays. The coaches are now allowed to call recruits once a week and make an in-home visit once a week. Handy recruiting calendar with definitions here.
November 29th, 2011 at 1:33 PM ^
That seems somewhat unfair to the coaches that still have a game to coach
November 28th, 2011 at 1:46 PM ^
Just tweeted that Fred Jackson will visit Dunn this week.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:41 PM ^
In all seriousness though, I'm a bit worried about the emergence of Fitzkreig. Could scare off Dunn if he's hoping for an early starting role.
Mostly because Fitz's success demonstrates an offensive mindset that would benefit someone like Dunn. Howeva, with Fitz having two years of eligibility, I see where you are coming from.
November 28th, 2011 at 2:48 PM ^
I don't think any 5-star RB is going to be scared off by a guy going into his 4th year of school. I don't care if that guy is Barry Sanders.
I would think he'd be more scared had we signed Dee Hart and Isaiah Crowell last year than having Fitz coming back.
November 28th, 2011 at 2:04 PM ^
however,8-10 carries a game could play well for another stud back. Lessen the load on your main hoss, and build up the bevy of running backs on the roster.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM ^
If he doesn't want the spread, then OSU and Urban should be eliminated. Hoke/Borges will be majority pro style once Denard leaves, so Brionte won't miss anything if he RS (which would be a probability).
November 28th, 2011 at 12:25 PM ^
Though apparently just saying we run a pro-style offense is all Hoke has to do to convince people we do. Fine by me if it works.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM ^
On Rivals he's saying he understands why Michigan is running so much spread with Denard at QB. Knows Michigan will switch to more of a traditional I in the future.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:38 PM ^
I would hope our coaches are smart enough to realize we just had the best offensive performance against OSU since the 1940's and that they would continue to try to emulate that success going forward.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:53 PM ^
You can run effectively out of a spread as well. See the Neb game. Fitz tore that game up, despite Denard's ground game being a little off.
I think when a RB says "I don't want to play in a spread" they mean "I don't want to play in a spread where I basically am an extra FB for the QB". Also many RBs are not a huge fan of option ball.
Borges has shown he considers handing the ball off in the backfield to be an important piece of his offense and will use it even with Denard as the QB. So I don't our version of the spread is going to scare anyone off. With Borges the RB gets touches, the ball in the backfield where they can pick a gap, make cuts, and everything else they want.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM ^
C'mon, man. We run the POWER play where Denard lines up in the shotgun and runs the inside zone read option. But, you know, powerfully.

Once Denard graduates they'll switch to a more West Coast/Pro style with Gardner, who isn't near the threat with his legs has has a bigger arm.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:46 PM ^
I'm not trying to pick fights here, but what makes you think Devin has a bigger arm than Denard....Have you watched any games this year? I have not seen Devin throw anything other than lame ducks this entire season. The notion that Denard doesn't have a big arm is a misconception. He isn't all that accurate at times, but he has a much stronger arm than Gardner from what I have witnessed to this point. I'm just sayin'.

everyone seems pretty convinced that Hoke and Borges are gonna go to a pro style offense but i have a feeling that there will be a lot of spread elements in the coming years.

You probably just started listening to them..
November 28th, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
Pro-style offenses aren't under center exclusively anyway. I think our offense will be similar to what LSU does with the ability to run the spread and a pro-style attack.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:31 PM ^
Borges ran some of the spread while they were at SDSU. It wasn't all pro-style all the time.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM ^
Still is very clear that he really wanted to and still wants to go to Ohio. Nothing against the kid but we were and still are the second choice. Dont get me wrong . . . still love to be the one on signing day, and unless Urban is willing to start his tenure by straight lying to a top recruit he will probably be in AA for good!!
November 28th, 2011 at 1:04 PM ^
Yeah, I am a little concerned that it appears Dunn will be choosing UM with his head while his heart is still all OSU. That might get him to AA but will he be willing to stick it out if things get "bumpy" at UM for him?
(NOTE: I am not making a comment on Dunn's level of commitment or attempting in any way to disparage him. My point is merely that it is ususally easier to stick to a decision that is actually in line with your true desire (heart) than one made rationally (head).)
November 28th, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
Signing day, Dunn will be in school by then.
This is going to play out rather fast, given he's an EE.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM ^
Shane Morris should be enough to convince Dunn that we are moving towards a pro style offense.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:44 PM ^
I thought Mr. Morris had some pretty good wheels?
November 28th, 2011 at 1:10 PM ^
He is def. a pro style QB and pocket passer.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:24 PM ^
That makes him Sam McGuffie!
November 28th, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
He's got the wheels to take off and do a little damage when a play breaks down, but he's not the type of player you'd call designed QB runs for. Very much a pro-style QB, just not a statue in the Navarre/Henne mold.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:55 PM ^
I think most "pro" style kids these days have shown he ability to make plays with their feet if they need to. I don't know if we will see a statue like Navarre again.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:46 PM ^
that is in this picture with Bri'onte Dunn and Dyamonte Thomas before the Nebraska game?
November 28th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
I thought that was taken after the game?
November 28th, 2011 at 10:03 PM ^
OK, so Morris is listed at 6'3", Dunn at 6'2" and Dynamite at 5'10". Either Dunn is shorter than his listed height or Morris is taller than his. Which of those is true will determine Dymonte's true height, but I've heard he's closer to 6-foot now, so that means Dunn's height is close to legit.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:34 PM ^
It doesn't matter. One player doesn't make a team. Urban Meyer wil be good at OSU, no doubt. But no way he recreates the success he had at Florida. All the hype he's getting is just setting him up to fail the high expectations. When ND fires Brian Kelly in 2 years, who is going to be the number one candidate? HEHEEHEHEHE...
November 28th, 2011 at 12:37 PM ^
Bob Stoops. Of course.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:47 PM ^
Jon Gruden would be???
November 28th, 2011 at 2:11 PM ^
will have retired three times by then.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:36 PM ^
This is from the free part of the article: he is waiting to talk to Urban.
The not-free part of the article suggests that he will make is decision pretty soon after talking Urban, he is quoted as not liking the spread (even specifically what he ran at Florida), and that he is taking an official in the middle of December. He also confirms he will be enrolling early.
