Tim Banks, the co-DC at Penn State, has some very interesting new follows.

Tim Banks was born in Detroit and played at Central Michigan. He's currently the co-DC at Penn State. His newest Twitter follows caught my attention.

Underwhelming? Dude is like the opposite of Brown and has 10 years of Co-DC experience w/ 3 years of complete control at Central before that.

49 years old. Detroit-area native. Surely will help recruit the state, and keep it away from MSU. Wheatley leaving hurt instate recruiting.

Again, don't know what his role will be for sure but independent DC could very well be a natural move for him given the experience level. I will say; however, my PSU friends do bitch about their S play occasionally.

Edit: Here's his 24/7 recruiting profile

Banks is approximately 90 spots ahead of Brown and is the reason we lose random Michigan kids to PSU, see Enzo Jennings, King bros, Jaylen Reed, Donovan Johnson, Jamari Buddin, Lance Dixon etc. (So yes hiring him will shut off PSU's Michigan pipeline)

Curious how he is the opposite of Brown?

I agree Brown's time at UM has run its course, but I'm not sure I'm immediately looking for somebody who is the opposite of Brown.  I enjoyed Brown's passion and demeanor.  He also had some really incredible defenses until last year.  Obviously, seemed like people were able to exploit his schemes and the talent dried up, but I'm not itching for somebody who's the opposite.

Bringing him in not only helps solidify Detroit, but it will help us with the Oak Park and especially Belleville kids. It shows those schools that Harbaugh is serious about keeping talent home.

In terms of his defensive philosophy though, I don't know how he's an upgrade. Would he actually be like a co-DC with Brown? I hope not, but wouldn't be surprised.

Unless he is a crazy good recruiter and would shut off penn states pipeline to michigan recruiting

Have you seen PSU's recruiting this cycle?  And, since when does JH prioritize good recruiters?  We started off with recruiting aces in Mattison, Wheatley, Partridge, & Durkin and replaced them with Nua, JayB switching roles, Shoop, & Brown...all recruiting down grades.

Prior to yesterday I'd say I prefer Wheatley as JayH's only big win was Charbonnet, but now backing it with Edwards that moved him up.  But, that wasn't a true apples to apples comparison as both were already on the staff.  We lost Wheatley and gained (McDaniels?) while Jay just shifted positions, although we did bring in Moore.  But, overall the former group was stronger than the current group.  Now if we could keep all three, could have retained Mattison and Partridge and let them share the DC role, then we'd be talking.  Why again didn't we try that?  :/

It was a bullshit move on Ace's part.  WD's alleged bash on alternative lifestyles wasn't a bash.  I'm still disappointed with that move and miss WD's participation here.

It wasn't actually a ban though, he can come back if he wants, allegedly.

At minimum his apparel posts saved me the time looking up Michigan gear that I wouldn't buy do to my divergent fashion sense.

Pretty sure he has been the primary recruiter for most of the Detroit area guys PSU has pulled the last couple of years. Could help sure up the recurring annoyance with Detroit kids going out to Happy Valley.

Yeah, looks like seven out his top ten recruits have been from Detroit (or Belleville).

This year he nabbed:  Kalen King and Kobe King from Cass Tech, Jaylen Reed from MLK, and Jamari Buddin from Belleville.  All are low four-stars and high three-stars.  (His other recruit is from IN).  Pretty crazy that PSU grabbed four Detroit (/Ann Arbor) kids in one cycle... and just on defense.

[Now see that The Cube posted most of this in his edit above.  Sorry if redundant.]

I'm glad someone else sees it that way too. I'm sure there are some real players from the Detroit area that we have lost due to his efforts, but many of the names listed here are not guys that will move the needle for us, in my opinion.

I know that recruiting your "back yard" is important, but if we ever want to return to glory, we'll need a national recruiting guru. As it was mentioned in a post yesterday, osu is not on their current run largely because of their ohio recruiting efforts.

Having a hard time remembering some of the specifics, but Michigan was in on almost all of the Detroit kids Banks pulled. Jennings, Dixon, and one of the King brothers specifically. Dixon was the same year as Hill and Lewis Cine, so he was the 3rd option behind two top 50 guys. It was talked about that the staff was trying to get King back in this year.

Regardless, a guy who has a good relationship with the biggest Detroit area schools is useful in recruiting. Yes, Michigan can't win with just Michigan kids, but it would be a lot easier not to have to go and fight for some 4 stars in FL and CA if they can get 4 stars in their backyard. Belleville will continue to put out good prospects, as will Oak Part, King, and Cass. A better shot at guys like Barnett, Dobbs (not them specifically) as well as less effort needed to sway Benny away from places like MSU could make the team better IMO. It's part of the larger picture.

Also, some of those guys were "plan B" type players as Michigan went after big time national prospects, but I'd rather the plan B guys be Detroit area 3.5 stars than some of the other plan B types that have been pulled in recently. I know he decommitted, but Phinney was a plan B/help recruit your friend option this year. Detroit has better prospects to "fall back on" if needed.

Fun fact - I met Al Bundy when I lived on Coronado about 20 years ago.  The dude was shit-faced after drinking all afternoon with Navy SEALs.  I told him I learned about sex from watching Married With Children.  He loved it and was a great guy to chat with.
