Snap Count Depth Chart - Indiana

Submitted by trueblueintexas on November 9th, 2021 at 5:10 PM

Here's the snap count depth chart for the Indiana game.

Offense:

  • McCarthy was able to get about 1/3 of the reps. Dropping back to throw on 12 of his 23 snaps. The coaches are trying to get him experience. As we all saw, sometimes it's very much an experience.
  • It was good to see Roman Wilson getting worked back in, especially because it looks like Baldwin is fading out of the rotation with the emergence of Anthony.
  • Hassan carried a huge load. He had averaged close to 40 snaps a game in the relevant games prior.
  • With no Erik All Carter Selzer picked up the slack. Schoonmaker & Honigford didn't see a significant increase in snaps and the TE/play ratio was steady at 1.48.
  • C. Johnson continues to be on the field for almost every play. That is a lot of work for a WR.

Defense: here's where it got interesting...

  • Michigan opened up in basically a 4-3 (MICHAEL BARRETT!!!)
  • They not only opened in it, they stayed in it a good chunk of the game. There were a few times I saw LB's out on WR's in man and had flashbacks to late Lloyd Carr nightmares, but when you have a lot better talent, you can get away with it. Let's hope we don't see that the rest of the year.
  • I didn't see him go out, but R.J. Moten didn't get many snaps. He may have been working through something because I saw him go in-&-out throughout the first half.

Here's the chart:

A quick Freshman update:

  • Tavierre Dunlap is at 2 games
  • Ja'Den McBurrows is now at 4 games
  • Rod Moore is at 6 games

This is maybe the thread that I look most forward to every week, so as always, thank you sir.

I know Harbaugh said that Barrett’s role came from them not wanting to have the substitution issues that obviously plagued them vs State (and long before.)

Curious to see how this ends up playing out, but like you, do I ever worry about LBers on WRs vs Penn State and Ohio State. That just screams trouble.

Also, 17 snaps seems awfully low to give a player like Ojabo. I didn’t notice any injury stuff? I’d like to think he’ll be on the field a lot more this week knowing Penn State is a throwing team, but that’s a bit eye opening.

The Ojabo count really sticks out to me.  He needs more snaps than that.  And maybe a few less for Hutch, given level of competitiveness in the game.

I know it's been going on all season, but for PSU, I'd prefer Mazi / Hinton to get closer to 2/3 of the snaps compared to half.

Concur that this is a great weekly effort.   McBurrows has really moved up the depth chart.   If Green can’t play, looks like he is the next man up.

I suspect they were hoping to redshirt McBurrows but with Green hurt that seems unlikely.  Glad he's getting some run...though it may be baptism by fire the next three weeks.

Moore is a pleasant surprise this year.  They have a lot of safeties and for him to break through and get some real PT is impressive.  We had a lot of depth concerns coming into the season and it is hard to argue with the new staff's development of young guys at every position with CB still being an open question.

It appears Moten's lower snap count is due to the re-emergence of Barrett (aka Mr. Universe). Moten got squeezed out by the 4-3 as Turner, Gray, Hill & Hawkins played in a standard 4-man secondary.

Also, Moten's + Barrett's combined snap count nearly equals the team's total...perhaps they didn't play simultaneously? I think that likely explains Moten's low snap count.

It was interesting during the game that even during the last couple series, with the game well in hand, the entire starting OL stayed in. I assume that was because a) the guards have missed so many games, Harbaugh wanted them to get reps as a 5-man unit and b) they weren't having a great game (e.g., multiple missed blitzes) so they needed more work.

Also, Michael Barrett had 11 tackles in the game against Penn State last year. Not that we want to replicate that game, exactly, but if he gets a lot of run next Saturday, he'll have some success to go off of.

Finally, why on all that is holy was Aidan Hutchison playing on the final two drives? He is literally our best and most valuable player. Once Michigan went up by 3 TDs in the 4th quarter, he should have grabbed some pine and his backup should go in for those final 12 plays and gotten a chance. He doesn't need to pad stats and doesn't need to get hurt. Coaches do that all the time and I can't figure it out.

Most coaches are slow to pull their starters, but this has been a constant frustration I have had with Harbaugh at Michigan from the beginning. As much as it is being risk averse, I also think Harbaugh has the philosophy that game time is a reward for hard work in practice. What ever the reason, Harbaugh leaves his starters in late into blow outs, and I doubt it's going to change.

One caveat, Harbaugh does try to get periodic first half snaps to guys they are trying to develop instead of always waiting for garbage time. I think that is a good trait and philosophy.

I think it's partly about reward and also about Harbaugh thinking playing in games prepares you to play in games. This team still has improving to do in many areas and I think that's what he's thinking much of the time.

I get anxious during garbage time (and sometimes even comfortable lead time) as well. I think most fans do.

I hope PFF makes it available at the end of the year, I'd love to see how Hutchinson's total snaps compares to other DE/OLBs throughout the country. I'd be shocked if he wasn't the leader at his position, maybe by as much as 100 snaps. Obviously, injuries and game situations factor in to that, but, yes, his high snap count is certainly eye-catching.
