Sooooo if Wink turns us down, where does Michigan go from there?

It seems like Michigan has put whatever is left of its eggs into the Wink/Cullen basket, so if both of them stay in the NFL or just flat out choose not to come, where are you going? Do you promote Clink to DC, if he hasn't already left you by then? And if he has, then what?

Do you just poach from the lower levels and hope you find someone who works out?

So if we hire Wink and get Clink to stay, that might be the best sounding defensive duo.

But in all seriousness, wtf is going on? I'm waiting for a striped tent and balloons to pop up followed by some calliope music.

I mean when you get a chance to hire a guy who hasn't been in college coaching for two decades and doesn't have any interest from the NFL you gotta take it!  Especially when his last defense had such stellar results!

He got fired because Brian Daboll (first-time HC for the Giants) fired a couple of his assistants and Wink called him out for it.  Daboll claimed they were building some sort of cabal to take him down, but I'd argue that yet another dipshit from the Bill Belichick tree is under .500 as an HC after 2 years and is blaming literally anyone he can.  Mind you, their offense (which Daboll has a heavy hand in designing as a former OC) is atrocious and maybe the worst in the league especially given the talent.  I don't think Martindale is going to be an amazing DC but from the couple of Giants fans I know they don't necessarily think Martindale was in the wrong here.

We'll see how he handles working with Moore if it comes to pass but I wouldn't read too much into the Giants exit.

I don't love Martindale by any means but the Giants as a team were (are) terribly coached at the top and their offense was atrocious and put their defense in bad spots.

I much preferred Cullen over Martindale but as a first-time HC I get Moore wanting to pick a guy who's done this job in the past and considering he's trying to make this hire in February after basically every good college DC and a bunch of pro DCs are spoken for, this is sort of the deal.  He might not stick around more than a year, but I get it as a stopgap if nothing else.

My guess is Josh Henschke jumped the gun based on little more than that Athletic article from the KC reporter.

Wink isn't interviewing with Dallas as of this moment, he seems to be interviewing with Michigan tomorrow and Cullen has informed people that he will be staying in The NFL. From that I'm guessing Webb is just doing the math.

Short of another candidate popping up all the sudden, assume it's Wink.

I absolutely loathe Aaron Glenn but at this point, he'd be a home run hire in my mind.

Fuck. This is bad. Like "get two free tickets with a purchase of a 20oz soda" bad.

Thanks a lot Warde.

What Henschke is now saying is basically true. The team preferred Cullen and felt like they were going to be able to hire him. He even was already calling guys to put a staff together on that side and have a game plan for after the Super Bowl.

For whatever reason now they feel like Cullen will get a better position in the NFL after the Super Bowl. Thus leading them to potentially hiring Wink to call plays and get Clink ready to be the full time DC. I personally think Clink is ready, but Moore wants an established play caller at this point. Wink will be a very short term hire, if it happens.

I guess we’ll see what happens with the Wink interview tomorrow. I am OK with it being Wink if it keeps Clink. Lucas from South Carolina was a guy Cullen reached out to and they felt like they could bring him in with Cullen. If Wink could bring Lucas in, that would be a solid hire.

Other than " he was good with the Ravens 4 years ago" what is the pitch for Wink?

- Bad defenses ever since

- Hasn't coached college in two decades

- Very unlikely to recruit

- Public and messy relationship with his last head coach

- Seems like a holdover position till some NFL team wants him back

This just seems like they decided it had to be a Ravens guy and he was the only one left.

He coordinated 2 legitimately good defenses with The Ravens and was LB coach for a bit before that with The Ravens.

He then had a mediocre year coordinating a Ravens defense.

Did I mention he was a defensive coach at the Ravens at one point? Oh, he also coached defense with the Baltimore Ravens at one point so he has that.

He didn't get along with anyone with the NYG and his defenses were dogshit but before his stint in New York he was a coordinator with The Ravens so there are only so many guys in that lineage to pick from. He may be the worst option of them all and a terrible fit but he used to be at the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s concerning to me that the Ravens immediately upgraded him with Macdonald. It feels like a Greg Roman type of guy on the defensive side of the ball who is more name than actual results and would be bound to kick around the NFL fringes for the remainder of his career.

It’s very underwhelming unless you’re keeping Clink and filling DL and LB with younger up and comers.

At best he'd be doing and short-term career renovation job here. If he succeeds he'll be called back to the NFL by someone. If he fails here he'll only be an anchor on the program for 2-3 years, dooming the 1st time HC and football program back to mediocrity. No risk.

Seems like a shitty fit to me but if you're a 1st time HC with no contacts of your own to tap into I guess you have to pick someone that once coached defense with The Ravens. If Cullen denied you, you're down to Wink because John is certainly done handing over his super-secret, defensive boy-genius dudes with Jim gone. He don't like Michigan THAT much lol.
