OT: Bill O'Brien to be named HC at BC
See, we're not the only superpower in the B1G with coordinator anxiety!

Whatever causes upheaval and additional work for OSU is all well and good by me.
I'm not really sure what to make of O'Brien. He did great at Penn State given the circumstances. I thought his teams would be lucky just to make it to .500 but they went beyond that. His time with the Texans, overall, was pretty good. Again, taking the whole body of work, minus trading De'Andre Hopkins away for a way-over-the-hill RB and some duct tape. He had some good teams there that made the playoffs.
He probably is a terrible GM, but I'm not all that convinced he isn't a good coach. Either way, I don't see this as a net positive for OSU, and whatever they decide to do next, its going to cause more upheaval with trying to find new options. I'm sure they'll find someone, but whatever makes their jobs harder, I'm all for it.

OSU fans were happy he was hired and happy when he took the BC job. what a wild two week ride

Glad to know we're not the only neurotic fanbase right now.

I wonder if Julian’s Sayans decision to attended OSU had to do with familiarity with BOB, and now he is leaving, what impact will these have on Julian ?
February 9th, 2024 at 11:21 AM ^
Most people said it was a big reason he chose OSU.
February 9th, 2024 at 1:56 PM ^
He should just transfer to BC and dominate the ACC

we are winning again!!!!!! yaaaaaaaaaaaaay. leave on a high note.

This will test Day's resolve to let go of calling plays. If he elevates Brian Hartline I think it will be difficult to fully give up control. OTOH if Day's Plan B is another experienced play caller then he is serious about becoming a CEO HC.

Thamel breaking another OSU story - how interesting.

It's a better hire than Boston College football has any right to pull off.

He's going to coach both places? I'm confused. When the Ohio University does something I thought that was that. I hope they are investigating.

This is bad for Ohio. If nothing else BoB was going to run the football. The backfield is the strength of this years Ohio offense. Now that he is gone Ryan Day will revert back to playcaller duties. And well, we can all imagine how that goes.

So once he got to know Cryan and the fanbase of low expectations he bailed....huh?

Wink scared him off

Wink as an amazing hire CONFIRMED

I nominate Kerry Coombs!

Why am I seeing Chip Kelly's name everywhere for this? Why would a guy who's actively trying to get out of college football take a massive pay cut to remain in college?
February 9th, 2024 at 12:13 PM ^
It’s actual insanity.
6+ million a year through 2027 guaranteed.
no amount of discontentment with cfb would justify giving that up, let alone demoting yourself and working for your former student to do so, all while moving from southern Cali to ohio

Username checks out

It always felt like a weird stop-gap anyway, and the internal chatter I heard was that BoB wasn't super-excited about basically being just an extension of Ryan Day in terms of play calling.
I'm sure they'll fine...someone to fill that spot. I do wonder if they just promote internally at this point.

OSU fans hated the hire, they are placated now
watch Day retake OC duties lol
February 9th, 2024 at 12:24 PM ^
None of it matters if they still can't block. And if the 5 star dude from Bama that Josiah blew up plays center they won't be able to snap either. Fun times.

Grand Opening, Grand Closing
February 9th, 2024 at 12:29 PM ^
Actually kinda bummed he won't be running their offense, he's always been a bit of an idiot at crucial points and with game management.
February 9th, 2024 at 12:30 PM ^
They think theyre getting CHip Kelly which will be way worse for the big ten than BOB. Kelly would be a top notch OC if he's willing to coach under Day.
February 9th, 2024 at 12:57 PM ^
I hope they do hire Kelly. He runs a lot of finesse, misdirection, stretch wide. Your teams physicality and toughness is a product of what you practice. For Ohio it will be more of the same. What Michigan does counters the shit out of that offense. O'Brien was going to run a more traditional power set blocking fb downhill run game.
February 9th, 2024 at 1:55 PM ^
Kelly is a latter day Richrod. His recent offenses have been ok but hardly scary. Another one-trick pony.
February 9th, 2024 at 1:15 PM ^
I understand why Chip would quit UCLA to take an NFL coordinator job, but why would he quit a college HC job to take a college OC job, especially where the HC likes to be an OC?
Edit: This did not age well, although I still don’t get it.

OSU's 2024 good luck continues.
February 9th, 2024 at 1:13 PM ^
This is bad news for Julian Sayin.
OSU will hire Eric Bieniemy.

Bill O'Brien is the Lloyd Carr of Bill Callahans.
