Michigan getting back in the QB market
Justin Martin 4 star QB that was committed to Cal.

It's easier when your team is making the playoffs every year. Good players want to be part of that, even if they aren't playing.
September 21st, 2021 at 4:59 PM ^
Now what makes you think we belong in the same conversation as the teams you just mentioned?
September 21st, 2021 at 5:17 PM ^
Yeah because if you are the backup on any of those teams you still get a ring
September 21st, 2021 at 5:40 PM ^
That's cute but it's not good enough. If you have ever coached you know that the kid occupying the very last place at the end of the bench thinks he should be getting playing time. And here, those not playing or starting have been stars all their life. I guarantee you that in this situation a "ring" does not cut it.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:56 PM ^
That's cute, but the question was just about recruiting stud QB's every year. Not keeping them.
The other poster was correct in saying that teams like Bama, Clemson, OSU, have an easier chance of pulling in a highly-ranked QB in every class because they win all the time and have more notoriety.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:01 PM ^
That is not what he said-not at all. He said the back-ups at "Bama" were happy just to be able to say they won an NC. They are not-and that is not a guess.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:53 PM ^
Yeah, it is a guess.
September 21st, 2021 at 9:44 PM ^
This.
At the end of the day, competition is what makes OSU, Clemson and obviously Bama the elite.
September 21st, 2021 at 5:37 PM ^
Low chance Cade will be here next year IMO. (GREAT if we can keep him!) Since I doubt he will be drafted this year - barring a HUGE season by M and an uptick in actual passing plays - I think he will probably look around for a chance to start at a school without a JJ McCarthy on the roster.
I do like Denegal as a prospect, but more as a Joe Milton/Wilton Speight style development opportunity. M will need someone who will be college-ready in a pinch next year unless Bowman has another year of eligibility....
September 21st, 2021 at 5:49 PM ^
Cade could win the Heisman, and Michigan fans would still be clamoring for JJ to start next season.
I'm not saying Cade has any shot at the Heisman, but the obsession with backup QBs always being the answer is tiring.
September 21st, 2021 at 6:52 PM ^
Not sure where I am saying JJ SHOULD start next year, but if you cannot see the difference in their skills then I am not sure what to say. This isn't a Peters, Speight, O'Korn situation.
Insiders already say "JJ is comin' for the job" so you have to feel that a change is coming eventually - I think next year would be ideal unless JJ is so much better than what Cade has shown.
Cade looks like he is on track to be close to what we all hoped Shea would be.....which is fricking awesome, but JJ has a better arm, seems to be a better runner, and is taller. Per insiders Cade has a better command of the offense and seems to be one hell of a leader.
All I was trying t say above is that I doubt Cade would stay if JJ passes him. The same is possible - maybe a bit less likely - for JJ if he does not pass Cade. In either situation you are going to be thin at QB and could use a "more-ready" QB recruit for this class.
EDIT - To Rob below --- I HOPE that they all stay but these young QBs have pro aspirations and I do not think sitting the bench when draft eligible is a great path to the NFL no matter how much you love M and value education.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:16 PM ^
Cade has done nothing even whiff that he shouldn't be starting. Hasn't even thrown an interception yet.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:50 PM ^
it's nice to have choices. i'm old enough to remember osu's 3rd string QB beating us not to long ago. but he didn't play school.
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:19 AM ^
I get it: JJ does look like the near future. He could start this year. You can hope for a Alex Smith/Kaepernick like situation and result, but why?
Cade is doing nothing but running the kind of offense we imagined. Yes, it is run heavy, but Cade is both 1) a good decision maker, 2) very accurate, and 3) he runs the play lock efficiently. There’s something to a leader who makes everyone better, including his backup. Cade has that kind of Brady/Brees/Fields like “moxy.”
He has less zip on his passes, but he gives the defense the arm threat that forces them to respect the line of scrimmage.
If we can maintain the offensive success (TDs on most drives) in conference, then you stay with McNamara. Don’t destroy team chemistry by forcing an unnecessary throw.
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:29 AM ^
Thank you for this take. There's something to be said about the player who always does the right thing, and usually puts himself in position where doing the right thing moves the team forward. I'll take substance over style every day.
September 21st, 2021 at 6:39 PM ^
You know, it's entirely possible many of these young men will make their decisions for themselves, and a big part of the equation will be the opportunity to get a Michigan degree.
Cade is no slouch at QB. Top football factories such as Bama sought his commitment out of high school. Cade chose Michigan.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:28 PM ^
We lost how many transfers last year?
Apparently the “Michigan Degree” didn’t mean a whole lot there (excepting grad transfers)
if you’re not from Michigan and have no other tie to the school, the degree can be from anywhere as long as they can play or have a better chance of playing
September 22nd, 2021 at 7:36 AM ^
mcnamara could definitely become draftable with a good season or two.
hell, ian book went in the fourth round this year, and i'd take mcnamara over him all day long. jake fromm, cole mcdonald, easton stick...guys like mcnamara (i.e. not 6'-4" with a howitzer arm, but smart, productive leaders) get drafted every single year.
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:22 AM ^
Because of Covid, Cade and JJ have the same eligibility. Cade has 4 years of eligibility. After this season he'll have 3 left. Just like JJ.
It'll be interesting to see how those two are handled next year.
September 21st, 2021 at 4:58 PM ^
Interesting....
I'd still love to get back in on that "Denard-like" kid that committed to Utah - seemed like a great fit between traditional QB 5-stars JJ and (hopefully) Dante.
Guessing M doesn't have interest or the ability to accept his Juco brother like Utah did though.
September 21st, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
Lots of hand-offs to be had!
September 21st, 2021 at 5:24 PM ^
Rainer? Is that you?!
September 21st, 2021 at 5:10 PM ^
We should be able to land a 5* QB every few years (discounting Shane Morris and Shea as they both turned out to be 'not really 5*'s)
September 21st, 2021 at 7:44 PM ^
Is it possible that we've passed our 5* curse off to Clemson and that DJ Uiagalelei will be the first of many poor QBs that will play under Dabo?
A guy can hope, right?
September 21st, 2021 at 9:50 PM ^
I mean, I see your point based off their offensive production this year but their o line is hot garbage.
DJ played lights out last year as a true freshman when Lawrence was out, with last year's o line.
That said, eff Clemson.
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:16 AM ^
Shea absolutely was a 5* out of high school. He was a stud in high school, and was easily the best QB in the all-american games. He was amazing. Now, his worth ethic in college, and his coaching up in college, are another story. But in high school, he absolutely was and deserved to be a 5*.
Morris, on the other hand, no. He was not a 5* in high school. I agree with you there.

"I may visit Michigan this weekend for the Rutgers game," Martin said. "I've been talking with them on and off ever since they offered. Once I de-committed today, they blew my phone up and talked with me, my dad and my coaches.
Sounds like he's interested. Go gettem. Dante is no guarantee, and we have seen how quickly a qb situation can get very dire. We need depth every year. guys will go, so they need to come also.. (twss)
September 21st, 2021 at 5:29 PM ^
I don’t know why everyone seems so confident about Dante Moore but it’s tough to find someone to say positive things about denegal and Michigan could be looking at an extremely thin qb room if you get a situation where JJ wins the job and Cade transfers out next year. Absolutely should took a swing at a guy they like
September 21st, 2021 at 5:37 PM ^
Don't feel like getting yelled at for OT stuff during the season, but here is a salacious "loosely Michigan QB-related" story that just popped up. A female teacher at IMG just got arrested for having sex with a student. Let's hope J.J. steered clear of this evil, amoral, sex-crazed 38 year old woman...

Similar silly story -- someone on twitter/tRCMB earlier this week claimed that Will Johnson YTWJ was hitting on their 52 y.o. ex-wife over Facebook.
If you saw an Tweet from Will Johnson saying "I am not on Facebook, have never been on Facebook" and didn't understand why...This is the reason.
Edit - I don't follow WJ but saw some of the commotion on Michigan Twitterz
September 21st, 2021 at 6:41 PM ^
Like an elite 18 year old athlete would hit on the 52 year old wife of some fat slob that posts at tRCMB
September 21st, 2021 at 6:45 PM ^
Cmon, spencer rattler is the face of ESPN for the last month and that guy got suspended his Sr year for a bathroom hummer.
Who cares!
If Will Johnson is saying what's up to your 52 yo lady on fb, good for you. Grow up.

having sex with a student
Why not call it rape?
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:02 AM ^
Because it was consensual, you puritan.
September 22nd, 2021 at 2:58 PM ^
Statutory rape is the crime of sex with a minor when the sex is agreed to by both parties, not forced.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:20 PM ^
I guess that would depend on what she looks like.
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:18 AM ^
Looking at her pic in the link, there is absolutely no way JJ would touch that meat.
September 21st, 2021 at 5:37 PM ^
Thought this was an interesting recruiting note as well:
Spurlock also recently received a FutureCast from EJ Holland to Michigan. I wouldn't be surprised to see him commit.

What are the steps for embedding tweets?
September 21st, 2021 at 7:42 PM ^
Use the media embed (next to the quote and image insert buttons in the top of the comment box) and a link to the tweet.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:57 PM ^
Thanks! I kept trying to use the "source" button at the far right—didn't even know that the correct button was for media embeds.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:05 PM ^
Is that new? I've been using oembed tags in the source editor and I'm going to feel really stupid if that media embed button has been there all along.

You're not the only one...
September 21st, 2021 at 5:40 PM ^
Cal, UCLA, Michigan, a giant gaping chasm of despair, and ole miss.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:36 PM ^
If the Ole Miss QB keeps playing like he is, he will definitely be in the running for the Heisman.
September 21st, 2021 at 6:04 PM ^
I think Martin has always been preferred over Denegal so I'm not shocked by this
September 21st, 2021 at 6:11 PM ^
Sorry for the threadjack but Harbaugh's reaction to a rambling question at today's presser is priceless:

Game recognize game.
September 21st, 2021 at 8:30 PM ^
The look on Harbaugh’s face is priceless, like dude are you really going to fart right now before I kick your ass. And then he just laughs and calls him out.
Harbaugh is back to his old self.
September 21st, 2021 at 8:51 PM ^
Man, I can't find a place to compress that gif of harbaugh looking pissed at that A's game. Here's a screen capture instead. I guess another word for that is picture. That glare.
