Jaelin Llewllyn done for the season with ACL Injury

Per the team. Well that sucks. Thought he could have been another version of Jones that was just taking a bit to figure it out at the next level. Either way, this hurts our depth a lot

Bummer. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Frankie Collins was so darn short-sighted. We sure could use him. Dug has some serious game, though. Let’s see what he can do with starter minutes.

We have a ton of undersized 4’s though. When you could bring in Reed, Tschetter, Jace, Glenn, Khayat and possibly Barnes in place of T Will, you have way too many of that type of player. At point and shooting guard you had Jaelin, Dug, Kobe and maybe Jett total. Baker and Barnes are more wings than anything.

He has 3 other assistants, one played point guard in the NBA…perhaps they should help with landing some guards. I really think they need to stop with the pursuit of the Colliers of the world and start focusing on talent analysis and find some guards in the 50-150 range or ones that are under scouted. I don’t think the entire coaching burden and the entire recruiting burden should all be at Juwan’s feet. What should be at his feet, is doing something to change the approach with guards.

re: roster construction. LLewellyn was brought in to be the starter yes, but AFAIK he was to be the 3rd point guard, along with Frankie and Dug. That's enough. Of course, Frankie unexpectedly (to us at least) bolted the next day - this was end of April

Moussa and Caleb didn't declare for another month - June 1 - and it was mildly surprising, at least to us nobodies, that both left since neither were projected as more than mid-second rounders.

So until they bounced, we didn't know if we'd have those roster spots open, then there was a mad rush to fill out the roster in June. You'd have to think they already had their eye on Baker, since we desperately needed shooting.

Which leaves the last minute signing of Khayat end of June. Could have gone for another PG but I guess with Khayat's upside and our general lack of bigs, it would be better than signing a 3rd PG or combo guard. Or maybe there just weren't any good PG options left at the time.

"Hurts our depth a lot?"  We didn't have any depth at guard before.  This leaves us with two scholarship guards on the roster and one's a true freshman.  Not good Bob.  This means there will be a significant number of minutes where we have one guard on the floor.  We're basically screwed.  As someone said above, the roster construction of this team is very poor.  Yeah, some was due to unfortunate early departures.  But we should have been much more aggressive with the transfer portal once it was known Frankie and Jackson were both gone.

This pretty much kills hope for a magical year this year as the team gelled. There is just no guard depth.

The upside is maybe he comes back next year allowing Dug to get more seasoned since we desperately need it

Absolutely no idea what they do for  backup PG minutes honestly. Really sucks that Hunter came back for what is almost certainly a lost season now. I think at minimum Llewellyn would have started shooting the ball better over the course of the season based on his career shooting. As others have said though definitely a roster construction issue when essentially one PG injury leaves you with one on the roster and he is a freshman on top of it.

It’s not just the point guard issue, the entire one through three are not position-less like we were told Juwan wanted his teams to be. Even a combo guard, which essentially Jaelin was, would be able to slide over. Now we are basically hoping Kobe and Jett can slide towards the 1-2 area and maybe Barnes steps up at the 3 to fill in gaps.

It's not foregone, but boy does it look bad. No guard depth, their starting PG is now a 5'8 freshman who can't really shoot, Bufkin who can definitely handle but has been awful shooting, Barnes who is a 2/3 maybe more 3 and then nothing. They have the second or third worst NET rating so far, our best chance for a good out of conference win will probably be an unranked UNC team, and then we play a B1G which looks pretty good.

I mean it is hard to see a way forward when you second unit was already kind of a black hole  offensively at times and you don't even have a backup PG now. Bufkin is probably someone who can handle the ball a little more and you can do some point forward stuff with Jett but I don't see how a team with no backup PG gets enough wins in a tough conference to make the tourney.

I wouldn't say it was underrated at all. It's obvious that was his strength as a basketball coach. His offenses to succeed demanded great PG play. Every single one of his PG's showed drastic improvement from year to year. I think who lost out the most was Zeb Jackson, he came to Michigan to play for Beilein and ended up really getting lost in the shuffle with JH.

Wish we had another true shooting guard because I think Kobe could be a Jalen-esque point guard look.

I would still roll with it.  My 5 this minute would be Bufkin-Jett-Baker-Reed-Dickinson.

That sucks, I hope he recovers well and soon.

The lack of guards is insane. This is why you need to recruit multiple guards instead of a bunch of 4s. If anything happens to Dug and Kobe we will have no guards. The coaches have absolutely dropped the ball especially Howard and Eisley who I believe is in charge of the guards.

The guard recruiting has been a weak spot but if Frankie was still here it would be fine. You aren’t going to find many teams with more than 3 scholarship point guards on a roster and with bufkin being a combo guard that gives you four solid ball handlers in the rotation. I don’t know what people think our roster used to look like but that would have been fine.

the problem is obviously zeb not panning out and washing out and Frankie transferring in back to back years.

Bummed for JLL - heal up soon & hopefully we have you for next season!

I saw someone post that last night Illinois vs Texas game, the starting PG for UI was a freshman. Coach benched him for playing poorly, and they brought another freshman PG off the bench who lit things up. Woe is us...

This isn’t necessarily a death knell.  Dug will continue to grow and his turnover rate will likely decline.  It will definitely be exciting.  Dug is a whirling dervish.

MGoBlue96

The problem is you have no other PG's even if Dug surprises. The only other guys who can  handle the ball are already in the starting lineup and you a had a bench that was having trouble scoring as is. I mean this team still has enough talent to not just get blown off the court completely in most games as we have saw the last two but we also saw a team that ran out of gas trying to finish the game because they don't have enough depth. I just don't see how that doesn't continue to be the trend all season with your depth even more depleted now.

Dug will not start at PG. If he does that means his presumed backup (Bufkin) will have to play every minute of the game as he is also starting. Bufkin will play the point with Dug as his backup. Barnes and Baker will play more. Bufkin is ascending (even his shot is looking better). Jett is a good distributor. Jaelin wasn’t doing much so replacing him at this point is doable. He probably would improve as the season went along but so will others.

This sucks wish him all the best. I don't think we were going to make the tournament anyways might as well run Dug, and have a walk on back him up. Sure would be nice to have Frankie, Zeb or DeJulius right now 🤔
