I apologise to all for not attending to this promptly when I announced my intentions four hours ago in the Mod Sticky thread.

While it's fine to celebrate flipping Benny back to the Maize and Blue side, let's first beat spartie on the field before throwing shade at their head coach.

It's awesome that we crushed them on the recruiting trail, but how about we actually beat them on the football field before doing and saying stuff like this.

Yea this thread would have been more humorous if Mel had not rolled into Ann Arbor and slapped us around in his first year.

Flipping Benny is amazing. I’m hopeful the new staff can make it work. We absolutely need to beat MSU this year hopefully by a margin that’s embarrassing to them.

Well, Dantonio made it work at MSU for a number of years.  Plus Tucker made UM look horrible in his first game in Ann Arbor.  This post makes little sense just because of one recruit.

From an on-field results perspective, Dantonio definitely made it work. From a recruiting perspective, not so much. 247 composite class rankings by year during Dantonio's tenure (with Michigan in parentheses)

  • 2008: 42 (11)
  • 2009: 22 (10)
  • 2010: 22 (17)
  • 2011: 32 (30)
  • 2012: 34 (6)
  • 2013: 37 (4)
  • 2014: 26 (20)
  • 2015: 23 (37)
  • 2016: 17 (8)
  • 2017: 36 (5)
  • 2018: 31 (22)
  • 2019: 33 (8)

He averaged a #30 recruiting class over his 12 years, topping out at #17 in 2016. However, he did go 8-5 against Michigan, including 3-0 vs Rodriguez and 3-1 vs Hoke. He had a losing record (2-3) against Harbaugh. He was also 0-1 vs Carr.

Sure. That was also the point. msu is never going to be a recruiting powerhouse. Even during their heyday (which aligned to Michigan's darkest days) when they were going to the BCS/CFP, they only had one class rated better than 22.

They made it work with a combination of good coaching, finding and developing players (diamonds in the rough, players with chips on their shoulders, underrated/under-scouted, etc.), and the ever-ambiguous culture/attitude. The fact that Michigan was down didn't hurt, either.

The question with Tucker is whether or not he can win without recruiting at a very high level. Maybe they'll strike gold every now and then and pull in a top 15-20 recruiting class, but they should expect classes ranked in the 20s-30s as a matter of course, 1-3 low four stars per class, and maybe a top 100 guy every now and then.

For the record, their top class ever per 247 was the 2000 class, ranked 8, which featured 5 guys rated in the top 100, led by Charles Rogers and Jeff Smoker. Other than that, John L had himself the #15 class in 2004, with their top-rated guys being names I don't recall at all - Hugh D'Imperio, Dwayne Holmes, Miles Williams, Craig McGovern, and Eric Andino. The class did yield SirDarean Adams, Domata Peko, and Brian Hoyer, though.

Fun Fact: they have had a total of four 5* commits since 2000: Malik McDowell in 2014, William Gholston in 2010, Charles Rogers and Jeff Smoker in 2000.

When you played in the Legends & Leaders Division and not only not having to compete against Ohio State for a Division Title but you didn't have to play them every season sure helped out. Don't forget that up through 2015, the Big Ten played 8 conference games and 4 out of conference which let Dantonio add another FCS cupcake into the mix.

After moving to the B1G East, other than 2015,  MSU really hasn't done squat. Suddenly having to play Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State every season  and all of that mumbo about character over stars and such didn't really translate to the field.

Bragging about crooting wins while taking on the field L’s.

Many still haven’t learned their lesson.

Our fanbase can be really embarrassing sometimes.

Just another example of why our fan base is widely recognized as the most "dillusional" fan base in America.  Measuring the program by things other than actual wins on the field. Mel Tucker just came to Ann Arbor on very limited practice time due to covid, installed a new system on both sides of the ball, with a completely new staff, and embarrassed us.

But we're superior because we flipped an instate recruit that has never played a snap.

SWEET!!
