Ferris Goalie Logan Stein Transfers to M

Submitted by dcblue92 on April 15th, 2024 at 2:03 PM

The Daily is reporting that Ferris goalie Logan Stein has transferred to Michigan. Obviously, there was a need, but it's unclear if this is a projected starter or backup (ideally). His junior year save percentage was 91%, not bad, but below 90% before that. I'm hoping we also bring in some younger goalies to develop.

He got about 60 percent of the playing time for Ferris this year. He seems to have been adequate, but it's hard to take results from a team with a bottom-of-the-barrel offense like Ferris and project how he will do at Michigan.

Ferris only scored 49 goals in 24 conference games this season (in a bad conference). I imagine that he will get substantially more support at Michigan--even considering the departures at forward.

Ferris St had an awful season in 2023-24 and really hasn't been very good for awhile.  Quite likely that his save % is as much (or more) a symptom of, rather than the cause, of their suckage as a team.

Ferris had some great years but quickly collapsed right alongside the then CCHA. They were able to develop, recruit decently, and be able to play against M, MSU, ND,O$U, regularly.

I had some great years in the student section at Ferris and watched Chris Kunitz as a kid. Many good memories but it is sad to see what that program has become through no fault of their own. Ferris is however probably the premier D2 athletic school in the country right now.

Ferris was, of course, national runner-up in 2012 ...... and in 2014, I was at this game, they played North Dakota in the Regional Final in Cincinnati.  As I think you know, they outplayed UND, they were very unlucky to lose that game in double overtime.

That would have been 2 Frozen Fours in 3 years.  But didn't happen, and it's really been downhill since.

You are right, Ferris is probably the premier D2 atheltic school in America right now.  Unfortunately, they're also the school that has been hurt the most by B1G hockey starting up.  They sorely miss the old CCHA and the greater visibility it provided them.

Hard to say that they are alone in that position, particularly if one includes the D1 sport they’re playing up in. Minnesota State and UMD both have hockey programs that shade Ferris, particularly in the last decade, with nationally competitive football and basketball teams as well. If we’re talking d2 only, Northwest Missouri State is a monster and has been for decades.

But as a UMD non-hockey fan I’d definitely take Ferris’ non-hockey results in the last decade and it’s not really close. But UMD fans who cheer for the hockey team? No way.

Weighting D1 sports for D2 schools is just tricky business. But Ferris is definitely one of a small handful of premiere schools in D-2 athletics no matter how small you want that category to be.

FWIW he seems like he was clearly the better of Ferris' two goalies this year to the point that you gotta ask why they were splitting time at all

Stein 21GP 2.90GAA .910
Giesbrecht 17GP 3.87GAA .886

29th nationally in sv% despite being on a dreadful team seems like it might mean something

Dont we have a goalie commit somewhere? I'm out of the loop on recruiting lately

Two guys committed. Cameron Korpi turns 20 next month and posted a .892 SV% and 2.98 GAA in the USHL. Stephen Peck just turned 19 and posted a .917 SV% and 2.25 GAA in the NAHL. So neither of them project as an instant impact answer at the position and you obviously wouldn’t want two true freshmen as your tandem, so the portal was always going to play a factor here.

Most likely they bring Korpi in to backup Stein and defer Peck until next season.

I’d also caution looking too deeply at Stein’s #s at Ferris. Ferris was terrible, but the rest of the CCHA was pretty horrid this year as well so the competition wasn’t much to brag about either. Probably be similar to Barczewski where the combination of playing with a better team in front of you but also against better competition results in a slight dip in the numbers you put up previously. He went from hovering around .920 every year at Canisius to posting a .907 this season at Michigan for example.

You have to be careful just looking at raw numbers when looking at prospects. The NAHL isn’t a strong juniors league in comparison to the USHL.

Its not unheard of, but is rarer for Michigan to recruit players out of the NAHL. The current roster has two players, Brendan Miles and Josh Orrico, who came to Michigan straight from the NAHL. Orrico appeared in 7 games, Miles in 6. For comparison, the USHL (including the USNTDP, which plays a USHL schedule) sent 15 players to UofM.

Peck’s numbers are good, but he’ll also be facing a much more significant step up in competition when he gets to college.

Yes, the save % is a little low, but, he may have better defensemen at Michigan to help him out. Kind of a double-edged sword. You can't make a judgement until he actually plays with his new defense. JMO. Hopefully it all works out.

He's a better prospect than those stats suggest and I would bank that Naurato knows best on this one. Stein was a member of the 2021 US WJC team that won gold  (this was the team with York, Beniers, and Brisson). He didn't play in the tournament, but being on that team means something. Most likely a bridge goalie for the prospects coming in, but someone who will be able to make an impact.

He had nothing in front of him the last couple years, and I believe he was on one of the WJC teams a couple years ago as well (as mentioned directly above). There’s probably some potential there.
