Per Chris Balas - Kansas Rumored to Have Offered 2 Year $4M NIL Deal to Hunter Dickinson

Submitted by Maizinator on April 20th, 2023 at 4:55 PM

Balas posted the rumor to the ON3 message board so no story link provided.

If true, that's certainly a large sum of money offered.  It was further commented that it would be unlikely for Michigan to compete with it.

Hunter is apparently still visiting Kentucky, so who knows what they offer there.

Interesting times.

Honest question: if this is true NIL (name will bring in revenue) can't that be quantified through his podcast? (how much money are companies making because they are advertising on his show?)

I don't see his value as a player or a personality so the 2mil a year doesn't make sense to me for Kansas.

Yep and this is why the NCAA makes zero sense. You have a rule that no one believes but you still have to at least pretend, maybe, to believe... and unlike actual professionals there are no contracts w the entity you play for. Do academics even matter at most schools?

It's got to be a nightmare coaching in this mess.

The contract is the key element, right?  Then you wouldn't have everyone being a free agent every year, etc.  NIL would still be available for things like helping sell shoes and TV contract money would pay player salaries through the school... just like the NFL.

This whole thing is a joke.

He’s the number 1 rated player in the transfer portal. Either you are in denial about how good he is when he’s at the top of his games, or all you do is harp on individual player flaws without any kind of comparison to the rest of the players not on your team.

Regardless of his defensive  inconsistencies—there isn’t a big in college basketball with a better post game than Hunter. And he shoots better from 3 than most 4s and 5s—and everyone on Michigan.

Blame the coaches for the lack of help D, but Hunter was far from the reason Michigan lost any game this past year.

Big W for Hunter. I don't blame him one bit. He knows this is his last shot at a payout like this for basketball.

I also think Kansas might he overestimating HD's value (or they just have a huge war chest and $4MM is a small portion of it). I don't mean any shade at Hunter, but his game just really doesn't translate to a title run IMO. I don't know what Kansas has coming in, but usually they'd have an athletic, rim-protecting 5* big man type that I'd favor over HD. Much like Edey at Purdue, I don't think you go far in the tournament before somebody with good guards puts Hunter in screen/switch hell and his defensive liabilities outweigh his offensive contributions.

So the evidence that you can win with him, is that he led a team halfway through a tournament before losing? And he had 11 pts, 2 rebs, 4 turnovers, and got abused defensively in the game that ended their season.

It's not sour grapes. I like Hunter. I think his decision to get paid makes total sense. It's a business now. However, I don't see teams feeding the post to win Championships. Especially bigs who don't rebound well or protect the rim. You can live with a lack of mobility if the rim protection and rebounding are there, but HD is pretty poor in all three areas.

Ha. Bit of a weird flex to use freshmen Hunter falling a bit short on a team that was seconds away from a final four bid to say senior Hunter can’t lead another team on a deep tourney run.  By the way, the 11 points he scored led Michigan that day. And I don’t know about “abused defensively” given no one did anything on offense except Johnny Juzang, and HD isn’t guarding him…

They got halfway to a title. They were close to being 2/3 of the way. And UCLA's entire offense was using Hunter and Davis's man as a screener to get space for Juzang, Jaquez, and Campbell.

I won't be mad if Hunter wins a title with Kansas. I'll root for him. I just don't think it happens, unless they have an athletic big that he's willing to sit on the bench for in situations that dictate it.

I'd be stunned in Kansas basketball didn't have a war chest for NIL.  KU is a basketball school.  Football only moves the needle if they are good and no one really gets to upset if they aren't good.  I'd guess the NIL funds for KU basketball far exceed the NIL funds for KU football.

Does anyone have any idea how much money can a player like Hunter make playing professional ball overseas?  If true,  I would think he is much better off staying put for a couple years, making a ton of money and getting an education.

Need some compensatory stuff going on here and for NIL to be reported. Not entirely serious, but it would be something if teams have to pay say 20% of the offer they give the player to the other school’s “NIL” pot.

Wait that sounds like free agency. That is absolutely not what NIL is. Nope.

I felt like Hunter was getting around a million here so this does not seem surprising. He is one of the most experienced and talented players in the portal. I appreciate what he has done and wish him luck unless he is playing against us.

Which is why his value being this high is crazy. I could see it if a college was trying to keep him from the NBA or an overseas team but he wouldn't see that money in those places. They are bidding against themselves. Maybe Michigan had decided not to do so for him. It seems they stepped up for Corum and some of the linemen who had NFL futures to stay for 1 more year

I mean duh, you leave / take that all day.

don’t hate him at all, did great things here, but let’s get that Tennessee kid and let’s roll. Bye Hunter, hand your jersey to equipment staff on way out

college basketball man …. Sigh

I like the concept of NIL, I hate the deployment of it. In my view, NIL should be to allow players like that Colorado player years ago that couldn't take endorsement deals from his skiing or to allow players to receive compensation for being on games like EA Sports.

If that’s real he’d be stupid not to take it. Michigan can’t (won’t?) match that. It won’t even try.

He likely does not have an NBA future so take in the millions that you can get now.

Hope get takes it, get paid big fella.

Meanwhile I want Michigan to add a hyper athletic big who can rim protect and run.

Let's get up and down the floor and press the shit out of people. I'm all in on Houston/Auburn/Tennessee version of Michigan.

My KU friends said all Hunter needs is some good coaching to make him into a great center. Since I live near by it would be cool if Hunter chooses KU.
