WTKA Roundtable 11/1/2018: From the Ivory Tower
Things discussed:
- Nate Stanley: Dude!
- Maryland: Dude! Once you have a certain level of money and power you think you lose accountability. How to check this: have a legitimate 3rd party making medical decisions. Any donor who wanted to pull their money: pull your money.
- MSU-Purdue: dude! State gets the rain again, Blough had his bad day.
- Penn State: At their most potent when Trace McSorley is running the ball. Make him throw! Alan Robinson wanted to come to Michigan badly—they don’t have anyone like that anymore.
- McSorley healthy? He ran a 51-yard TD after his knee got banged. He’s performing at a better level than his stats imply but his receivers are his receivers.
- Their DL has five guys who can get after the quarterback. Two Michael Dwumfour types at DT and three dynamite DEs, including Yetur Gross-Matos who’s playing out of his mind.
- Nobody can say Oruwariye, nobody in the linebacker level looks like a Linebacker U guy. Can PSU stand up against Michigan’s ground game? Pull out all the Harbaugh and grind them down.
- Jansen: Brian explains why you don’t run much power against an odd man front. Here’s a graphic from me:
- Ed Warinner has a play sheet now—Michigan didn’t know what they’re doing with Shea against Notre Dame; maybe Ed’s teaching them how to not suck at spread
- We want Bama…to win against LSU? Don’t trust the committee to leave out a 1-loss Alabama that doesn’t go to the SEC Championship over a Michigan that wins out.
- Ferentz still brings up the fact that Chris L. Rucker got out of jail and played against him.

Not every school sells their soul.

Is anyone else having an issue with the podcast feed on iTunes? Not only does it not grab the latest episode, but if you manually go look for the episode it doesn't show up. I'm having to delete the whole feed, reinstall it again, and then all the episodes show up. I'm not having this issue with any other podcast.

How to check this: have a legitimate 3rd party making medical decisions.
I mean, that's kind of what happens. It's hard to take it truly out of the hands of the university entirely because someone has to pay the medical/training staff to be there. But the staff usually doesn't report to the head coach and I believe that was the case at Maryland. That's to avoid having the head coach, who's incentivized to have his players on the field, influencing the training staff to put a player on the field who shouldn't.

What is Brian referring to with Maryland having to leave their ancestral grounds? Can't find any news stories about this and I don't remember that.

He's talking about them having to leave the ACC, because their athletic department was running in the red, and the Big 10 had more capacity to help them resolve that. They probably would not have been a candidate to join our conference otherwise.

Power vs Odd 5 tech: can be done well by doubling with the TE and kick/log with the H/FB & Wheel the guard or vice versa depending on alignment. Disagree that it should be run against odd. It’s a nice mix up
