Made just enough of these shots tonight to win [David Wilcomes]

Michigan 58, Penn State 57 Comment Count

Michigan won a basketball game shooting 31.5% from the field. It was a horrific experience to watch and the quality of basketball was very poor, but Michigan got a victory on the road in State College and every win is big at this point in the season. The reason? Penn State shot the ball very poorly and the Wolverines went 19/22 at the line, hitting all their free throws late. In this ugly wrestling match in the mud, it was just enough to get it done.

The first half was a dramatic difference between the feelingsball sense of how things were going and the actual score. Michigan struggled offensively to get much of anything going, while Penn State, a terrible midrange team, started knocking down junk shots at a high percentage. Sam Sessons feasted in iso against Kobe Bufkin, getting to the rack with ease, and even when the Wolverines were able to put up good defense, the Nittany Lions knocked down their shots. The Wolverines trailed by 11 points with four minutes to go and the opposing crowd started to get involved. The team's tournament odds were fading in a hurry.

That's when the Wolverines put the engine in gear and closed the half well. An 11-0 run, adjusted upwards from 10-0 at halftime after a two point shot was revised to a three, got Michigan back into the game just before the break. Caleb Houstan and Brandon Johns Jr. both knocked down three pointers for a Wolverines team that had previously been ice cold from distance. A switch to zone from man-to-man on defense helped keep the PSU offense at bay, and the Lions didn't help themselves with a couple horrendous turnovers. After a great pass from DeVante' Jones hit Johns to set up a layup at the horn, Michigan was back in it. Despite the feeling of impending doom that was pervasive in the first half, the score was somehow tied at 34.

Hunter Dickinson didn't make nearly as many of these shots as normal tonight [Wilcomes]

The second half was substantially worse than the first half from a quality of play standpoint. That could be summed up in the following statistic: Michigan won the first four minutes of the second half 2-0. Both teams struggled to hit open shots, and that was epitomized by a scuffling Hunter Dickinson, who shot 6/20 from the field, missing a litany of shots he typically makes. Penn State was no better on offense, and the field goal percentage stats for the two squads sank like stones. The second half oscillated between small Michigan leads and tied games, never expanding to a point of comfort, but the Maize & Blue were generally in front.

John Harrar made a pair of free throws with 3:41 to go, and the score was tied at 48. Eli Brooks missed a layup, Dickinson grabbed the rebound, and he got hacked. The big man drained both free throws, beginning the clear theme of the final four minutes, which was Michigan's excellence at the free throw line. An Eli Brooks jumper a minute later put Michigan up 52-48, and the Wolverines began to put the clamps on defensively. Jalen Pickett missed a three pointer and the Wolverines held the ball with under two minutes to go, still up four. A basket would potentially end it, but Jones fired an inbounds pass off a PSU player, which ricocheted back off himself, and out of bounds for a turnover.

That lifeline thrown to the Nittany Lions didn't go very far. Sam Sessoms missed a layup despite having a step on Terrance Williams II, and Dickinson got the rebound. Michigan wound the clock down under a minute and had an open hook shot for Dickinson, but the ball hit off the heel and PSU snagged the board. After Micah Shrewsberry called timeout, Seth Lundy drew a shooting foul. Lundy went 1/2 at the line, and with Michigan holding a three point lead and under 30 seconds left, it turned into a free throw battle. Caleb Houstan and Eli Brooks would combine to go 6/6 at the line down the stretch, never letting the home team hold the ball down one score. Penn State nailed a three at the horn down four, which made the final margin one, but the game was over at this juncture. Final: 58-57 Michigan.

PSU didn't make many of these shots tonight either [Wilcomes]

The box score is a horror show to look at from an offensive standpoint. Dickinson led the team with 19, but again, shot 6/20 from the floor. Brooks scored 16 points on 4/9 from the field. The other three starters, Jones, Houstan, and Moussa Diabate, combined to go 4/17 from the floor, while Brandon Johns Jr. and Frankie Collins went 2/7 off the bench. The shots didn't fall, but Michigan hit 86.4% from the line, including all those late high-leverage free throws. An interesting development was Diabate being benched for a large stretch in the second half for the second consecutive game, leading to one segment with Johns playing the five. Jalen Pickett led PSU with 14, followed by Sessoms with 13. No other Lion scored in double digits.

Tonight's victory began a three games in five days stretch for Michigan, who face a compressed schedule over the final month of the season due to rescheduled contests. Thursday brings Purdue to Crisler, while Saturday brings Ohio State to town. Both are ranked in the top 25 and both represent opportunities for the vaunted marquee win that Michigan desperately needs. The Thursday game is scheduled for 9:00 PM EST and is set to be televised on ESPN. There is no content after the jump.

This game just reiterated that if Dickinson isn’t on his game we have next to no chance.  Thankfully PSU couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn either, 58 points will not get it done 99% of the time with how shitty our defense is.

The supporting cast is just so bad.  Jones and Brooks are our 2nd and 3rd best options, which isn’t a knock on them they’re just limited players.  I will continue to say that this is the worst freshman class I’ve seen.  We get nothing from Houstan except ok shooting mixed in with some hilariously bad misses and just bizarre miscues like the fumbled rebound out of bounds when no one else was around him.  Diabate is completely lost and should be benched for Johns.  Collins and Bufkin can’t even get off the bench anymore.  I’d be shocked if any of these guys leave for the draft.

I hate it but I basically agree with every word you said here. And I'm left wondering, what is it with the freshman? Are they not being coached properly? Did we really have that many recruiting misses? Is it a thing where this team has zero leadership on the court? A combination of all of those things. It's so frustrating seeing players like Smith down at Auburn, Mohammed with an awful Georgetown team, hell even Christie at MSU!

Christie stinks also.  But yeah you look at what Houstans peers from the top 10 of the recruiting class are doing and you wonder how he was ever ranked among them.  I have no idea what the issue is.  3 McD’s AAs and not one of them is a positive contributor this year.  Can’t remember ever seeing that happen especially in this age of one and dones.

Absofuckinglutely.

Putting lipstick on this pig -- at then end of the game, the announcer said that someone will find hope in PSU's desperation three as the buzzer sounded.  How sad is that!

Thinking about the "talent" / recruiting rankings we have on this roster, it reminds me of the occasional year when MSU falls flat despite a great / "talented" roster...   But then you look at Izzo's 23 straight tournament appearances...

And no I don't like MSU, I can barely watch an MSU basketball game because of Izzo's sideline antics. I just hope Howard (1) gets better at managing incoming/new classes  and (2) we see improvement each year as the season progresses.  .

This off-season will be interesting: I know the season isn’t over yet and we could still make the tournament. Assuming Dickinson goes pro like he has said he’s going to, that leaves one open scholarship. Do we go after a center or another shooter? Perhaps another point guard to back up Collins? The only “bigs” we will have on the roster is Diabate and Reed. We’ve used Johns and a walk on this year to help with inside depth. We need shooting, obviously.  Dug, Glenn and Reed aren’t gonna provide that. Jett should help. One can hope that Kobe and Caleb continue to improve their shot in the off-season. Does Tschetter provide some outside shooting, will he grow some and be a little inside presence as well? Who backs up Frankie at point next year? Dug is most likely but he will be a true freshman. The roster is weird at the 3/4 with Houstan, Jace, Barnes, Tschetter, T Will and Glenn all all slotted for that position area. You lack inside presence next year, youthful point guards and not much at the off guard spot. This is what makes Zeb’s transfer all more puzzling, he has that combo feel that definitely would’ve came in handy next year.

Man, two steps forward, one step back with this team. They're getting better though.. a little bit at a time. Learning how to win ugly is good but I would like to see some more nice W's going forward.

Houstan can't create his own shot and is only good from 3 when he is spotting up and his shot is not contested. He is a significant liability on defense. His game would appear not to have translated to this level. It's Feb 9 and he has played 20 games now, I'd love to be wrong, but it looks bad.

It is going to be a tall order to finish .500 or better and make the NIT. I really hope Jett Howard is ready to be good early next year, because next year's team doesn't project too well if he isn't.

All recruiting classes should be ranked a second time, after it's members have used up their eligibility. Right now this class looks like a big miss. And for those who cite second year or after jumps with Franz, DWalt, Morris, Burke, Stauskas, Levert, and others- all of those guys showed a fair amount as freshman. That is one thing I have appreciated after watched some of the many games involving them that I had saved on tape.

That inexplicable foul that Williams committed on the three-ball in the winding seconds with Michigan up five had me screaming expletives I didn’t know were in my ammo pile. What the hell was he thinking?

This team gives game long performances of stupid thing after stupid thing.  I hate it but thay starts up top.  Some are young player things. Sure.  We're also 2/3 through the season.  Defensive woes are an issue too.  I harp to my Iowa friends about Iowa's shitty defense and how that starts with coaching, yadda yadda, but our guys just seem legitimately slow laterally and can't physically match even semi-quick guards/wings.

I enjoy the increase in urgency this team is beginning to show, but defensive wins only go so far. We will need hot shooting the rest of this week for sure. This is opportunity week. Go get it done Blue..

Typically I would be talking about being only 2 back in the loss column with a slew of home games coming up (6 of the remaining 9), and it would be very positive.  Given where we are (not how we are playing), we should be optimistically looking at a double bye in the BTT.  Typically.

The lack of shooters and creators is bleh. Despite that, they cobble together offense because Dickinson is usually better.

I want a special shout out to KB, who put on one of the worst defensive 3 minutes I've ever seen. His man beat him off the dribble 3x in a single possession. As soon as he switched onto a guy, that dude took him off the dribble. A lot of defense is want to. He hasn't been this bad most games, but that was turn style D. It puts the coaches in a tough spot because you'd like to bench other guys who aren't playing well, but it's pretty much just the HD show at this point.

It's a road win, but this is one of those cliched teams that seems to always play down to the opponent that they're playing. Moral victories are no longer an option if we're going to make the tournament. Right now we are on life support.
