Today’s harbaugh reading

Submitted by double blue on January 20th, 2022 at 9:15 AM

Neg if you want. My insider friends thought contract would be done by now but it appears Jim is serious about nfl.  Biggest caveat is complete control including $$$ on players.  Only one likely to give that is Las Vegas.  Bisaccia interview is crucial-  hope he crushes it.
He loves Michigan but believes only Nd has potentially harder issues w recruiting given school, academia, administration and AND fanbase expectations.

This is a bit off topic but some friends of mine saw Harbaugh and a couple of assistants in a Hurricane (restaurant) outside of Jacksonville on Tuesday.  They were all wearing Michigan gear.  Apparently he was down there on a recruiting trip.

So, at least we know he's still attacking each day for Michigan at this point.  We also know that they're not blowing the athletic budget at high end restaurants because Hurricane is more of a chicken wings kind of place.

I like this update from HateSparty too. The problem I see is that “good speculation” from insidery types is massively upvoted here, while “bad speculation” gets massive downvotes. I’m sure it’s true that no one really knows. I think you can really make a case either way just on reading the situation.

TK (and others), i sympathize with the 'bad' speculation getting downvoted, its the nature of the mgobeast.  but again to hatesparty's credit he acknowledged his own homerism in his post, and we all should, too.  we are all colored by our emotions in an emotional question like this.  we aren't talking about what choosey mothers choose in peanut butter, we're talking about the coach of the university of michigan football team!  all that said, the listed points about schlissel and anderson and the timing of each do appeal to logic to a significant degree.  are they determinative?  we'll find out....

My insider sources tell me that we have a ton of talent on the team and staff and if Jim returns that's great. If he doesnt', we will find a great replacement because its Michigan fergodsakes.

Hiring this late in the year is not a recipe for success. Or at least not in the immediate term. There are 2 options with significant draw backs.

1 - Hire internally. Most likely Gattis. That probably holds the staff together for the most part and keeps most, if not all, of the current players from transferring. Problem is we don't know if Gattis will be a good HC or not. Short term that might work out ok from a roster and staff perspective. But no idea if it would result in a good on-field team.

2 - Hire from outside the program. That probably means losing almost all of the current coaching staff save a few positional coaches (Hart, maybe Moore or Bellamy). Would also lead to some transfers that always come with coaching changes. That could be ok in the long run IF the hire was a homerun. But, who is that homerun? Campbell had the most experienced and talented team he's ever had in a bad conference and faceplanted this year. Fickell won't take the job. So you're going to end up with a B type hire and sacrifice the current staff and potential transfers. Not feeling great about that.

Not gonna neg here but you have brought absolutely nothing new to the table and really only reaffirmed what everyone knows. The only thing new that nobody knew is that you have insider friends and we still don't really know this.

You seem like a good guy though.

No NFL team offers complete control.  That’s why they have GMs.  And when the players make more money than you and have bigger egos, they’re not going to submit to complete control by the head coach.  Part of why Urban failed.

Exactly why only Vegas is a threat. But Davis is crazy and close to harbaugh.
For those saying this is not new. Ok but I never heard from them it was this serious and down to a specific wish list. The thought before was feelers and mild interest.  Hopefully my last comments today.

No shade meant, the way I read the post is that was the situation (HC/GM) that Coach Harbaugh was looking for.

New England actually doesn’t have a GM in title.  BB is Vice President of the company in charge of football operations he coaches and hired a director of player personnel to iron out contracts/scouting and such but Bb has final say over all football related decisions.

I have a ton of family in Vegas. There's literally no reason anyone would ever willingly choose to live there. None.

OTOH Harbaugh has several young children in school, living on the street he grew up on. He just pulled a position coach away from a very good job. I'll believe he'd leave when I see it.

As someone who finds population growth and stuff like that interesting, Vegas is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the entire country.  So apparently lots of people want to willingly live there.  I'm guessing it's part of the net migration to the Southwest as well as coastal folks moving eastward for cheaper real estate.  I agree that Ann Arbor sounds better in comparison, but I wouldn't discount the allure of living in a booming city with the money they have

Vegas is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the entire country.

Along with every other boomtown in the Southwest, Vegas was built with readily available water from the Colorado River watershed, but because of drought conditions that are unprecedented since the Southwest was settled by pioneers from the eastern US in the 1800s, the situation has changed drastically over the last decade or so.

The Colorado has shrunk to half its capacity since 2000. It feeds into Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the US and the source of 90% of the drinking water for Las Vegas. The lake is at its lowest level since it was filled in 1937.

Las Vegas has been dealing with this situation for several years, instituting a variety of measures to reduce municipal water usage. It's going to be a real challenge to sustain the rapid growth with sharply curtailed water availability.

(I'm not saying that any of this has the slightest impact on Jim Harbaugh's decision re Las Vegas.)

This is all true, the southwest states have a large water reckoning coming in the next few decades (if it even takes that long).  Both Nevada and Arizona especially have to figure something out.  Arizona seems to be relying on drilling into underground aquafers while Nevada is drastically cutting back on total water usage and looking into more sustainable water practices.  It's gonna be fascinating to see if they can figure out a permanent solution or if that area eventually craps out in a few decades as a victim of unchecked climate change

They need to revise the definition of "beneficial use" within the prior appropriation doctrine (first in time with a beneficial use gets priority). While there are certain carve-outs to allocate water use without older/junior designations, that's pretty limited. Narrowing that definition to avoid inefficient use might give them a chance.

Eventually, there will be water litigation between these SW states. Florida v. Georgia and Texas v. New Mexico are two similar cases.

Eh, I had family in Vegas too (seeing as how you are also a River Rat, maybe we are the same person talking to each other?!??) and while I kinda hated the city too (the novelty of the Strip wears off after your first 2-3 times seeing it), droves of people are willingly moving there, and not just for the casinos.  Definitely not my cup of tea but there's clearly been enough growth there over the last decade to show that pink adobe strip malls appeal to some people.

"I have a ton of family in Vegas. There's literally no reason anyone would ever willingly choose to live there. None."

This is such a dumb thing to say. There's plenty of reasons one would want to live in Las Vegas... just no reasons that you'd agree with. There's tons of entertainment options, obviously (always stuff to do). Death Valley NP, which is very beautiful, is about an hour away. For people that like beautiful desert regions (like me), Las Vegas is centered in the middle of one. Different people like different things... you obviously hate Las Vegas and the surrounding area... while other people may like it.
