Ryan Day called Harbaugh before extending offers to Mattison
Thought this was very interesting.
February 12th, 2019 at 8:38 AM ^
So he (Day) phoned Jim Harbaugh.
“Like any time when you’re hiring somebody, you want to call their boss and talk to them and, obviously, get their permission before you address them,” Day said on National Signing Day. “So I went ahead and did that. Didn’t really know Coach up until that conversation with him.”
February 12th, 2019 at 8:39 AM ^
Previously reported, but thanks for the relatively new story.
February 12th, 2019 at 8:44 AM ^
Something just feels off... I may be reaching but I feel like they were definitely optimistic about landing in ohio before "The Game"... They may have not had an official offer per se but that D looked horrendous the next two games as if something big had changed... And damn that pullover is hideous... Looks like bloody puss imo...
February 12th, 2019 at 8:47 AM ^
Yeah, you are definitely reaching. You seem to be questioning the integrity of these guys. Really unwarranted.
February 12th, 2019 at 8:51 AM ^
I’m ok with it being questioned.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:59 AM ^
I'm okay with it being questioned. But the next step is offer some proof. Poop or get off of the cooler kind of a deal.
February 12th, 2019 at 10:08 AM ^
You can question their integrity for the move without subscribing to any conspiracy theories.
February 12th, 2019 at 8:37 PM ^
Mattison is clearly lacking Integrity. Washington’s is debatable because of his history.
I would not believe for a minute either would have helped OSU beat UofM in this years game.
Mattison is still a raging scumbag.
February 12th, 2019 at 11:57 AM ^
I mean, the top defense in college football let up a billion points and yards in two straight games after dominating all year long. That’s proof that something changed I would assume
February 12th, 2019 at 1:26 PM ^
Yes. It did. The quality of the opponent and, at least in the case of Ohio State, the quality of the QB.
February 12th, 2019 at 3:58 PM ^
Were Ohio State and Florida really that much better than PSU and ND? We’ve got a lot of revisionist history with regards to our defense after those last two games, like OSU and Florida were unstoppable juggernauts and every other team just sucked leading up to them. Haskins was definitely better than other QBs we faced, but OSU scored, what, 8 touchdowns more than what we were allowing? I don’t buy that OSU was 40 points better than any team we played last year
February 12th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
You mean like playing an OSU team that is tailor-made to attack the well-known weaknesses of our defense and then playing against Florida without our two first round picks and Chase playing injured, in a game that really didn’t mean a whole lot...
that kind of change?
February 12th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
You mean like watching Indiana use OSU's favorite plays to torch us and then watching the OSU game where we had made zero adjustments to plays every fan here knew they were going to run on us... That kind of conspiracy?
February 12th, 2019 at 8:55 AM ^
No excuses, we got our ass handed to us. They didn’t need inside intel or an attempt to sabotage us in that game. Crossing routes have killed this defense all season, and they attacked our slowest corner with fast receivers.
February 12th, 2019 at 12:10 PM ^
Crossing routes are great against cover 1 man (what we run most of the time). Would've liked to see Don mix in some cover 3 or 2 to keep them off balance. Can't let someone beat you like that with a single concept. I think Campanile was brought in to help teach zone concepts to address this issue.
February 12th, 2019 at 12:42 PM ^
Just to be clear, Campanile ran Brown's defense. So if you're talking about hiring Campanile to help teach a specific position group Brown's system, then I agree.
February 12th, 2019 at 3:33 PM ^
Yep. An extra guy back there to help teach. His familiarity with Brown's system and track record of success teaching DBs make him a great hire.
I believe Don Brown knows his stuff, but getting the players to understand it all is the trick. If they want to mix in more coverages to break tendencies in a game, maximizing practice time so players can do it well, is important.
The secondary is gonna need to step up next year with the loss of some big time players up front.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:26 AM ^
Reach.
Big reach.
February 12th, 2019 at 10:40 AM ^
@GoBlueSean,
You are being negged, but isn't this essentially what happened with DJ Durkin before the OSU game, when he interviewed with Maryland instead of preparing (granted a DC and DL coach have very different impacts on a game).
February 12th, 2019 at 11:56 AM ^
The thought crossed my mind. But Durkin was our DC, Mattison was a position coach.
We've discussed this ad naseum, but the Gary/Winovich were too hurt and the interior DL was inherently ineffective. The bad defensive performance wasn't because Mattison was out the door already. Everyone takes a beating sometime.
February 12th, 2019 at 6:05 PM ^
Yep - that game was more about the jimmies and joes than the x's and o's. The lack of pass rush by the jimmies caused too much stress on the joes to cover all of that speed with a QB throwing darts and hitting the bullseye on almost every throw.
February 12th, 2019 at 8:51 AM ^
Respectable move
February 12th, 2019 at 7:42 PM ^
Right ? The shocking thing is, it came from someone at OSU !
February 12th, 2019 at 8:58 AM ^
Just cause he made a phone call doesnt make it right.
"Hey Charlie this is Ted."
"What's up Ted?"
Well.....I'm sure you've heard I kicked my wife out of the house. Wasn't real happy with how things were going so I told her to leave."
"So?"
"Well I need a new wife and I've always admired yours so do you mind if I ask her to leave you and move in with me? Oh.....and your daughter is pretty hot too so I'm planning on asking both of them to leave you and move in with me. That's not a problem is it?"
February 12th, 2019 at 9:01 AM ^
love the humor.
nevertheless, if true re: day called JH beforehand, give credit where credit is due. class move.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:02 AM ^
Can't quite follow the last paragraph. Is Ted asking Charlie for Charlie's wife and daughter? The grammar would lead one to believe that Ted is referring to Ted's wife. No makey sensy.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:08 AM ^
Starring in my one act play are the following......
Ted = Ryan Day
Charlie = Jim Harbaugh
Wife = Greg Mattison
Daughter = Al Washington
February 12th, 2019 at 9:12 AM ^
The confusion stems from:
I need a new wife and I've always admired her
I believe you meant
I need a new wife and I've always admired yours
February 12th, 2019 at 9:15 AM ^
Danka. It seemed so clear to me but I was reading what I was thinking and not what I actually wrote.
I've fixed it. And when they make film adaptation of my play and I win an Oscar for the screenwriting you can rest assured I'll give a big shout out to Bo Glue for his editing of my magnum opus.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:22 AM ^
Danke*
Bitte.
February 12th, 2019 at 10:11 AM ^
Bitte, baby.
Please, you are making a German spectacle of yourself.
February 12th, 2019 at 12:24 PM ^
Break out the schnitzengruben! Maybe a little vitamin E, too.
February 12th, 2019 at 2:47 PM ^
What a nice guy.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:33 AM ^
Need to add a prequel...a year before your story starts, Charlie invites Ted’s Sister that had moved out to Minnesota to come live in his house and freshen up the ‘heart of the home’ with some simple recipies.
Now thats’s a story!
February 12th, 2019 at 9:50 AM ^
Man, I love this place sometimes!
February 12th, 2019 at 10:56 AM ^
It's kind of like the plot to the Hogan Family where Ted's wife, the ball-gagging WR coach, died in a car accident months before. In this version, the folksy but nosy neighbor is played by Gene Smith.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:52 AM ^
What you and other users do with your magnum opus is your business but this is a sports blog.
February 12th, 2019 at 11:01 AM ^
This is what workshopping new plays is for--you work out the kinks.
February 12th, 2019 at 11:08 AM ^
Who's being cast in the different roles for the play? Maybe we can get William Shatner some work?
February 12th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
MGOBLOG, come for the football. Stay for the grammar criticism.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:26 AM ^
wait. does this make us relatives of ohio? because if it does then i no longer like your play....
February 12th, 2019 at 9:35 AM ^
Only by marriage in the Big Ten family. MSU on the other hand is an illegitimate little brother. One fateful night with the farmer neighbor's daughter. Forever linked by tainted blood.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:19 AM ^
Come on. It wasn't perfect, but it also wasn't hard to figure out the intent.
February 12th, 2019 at 9:13 AM ^
Is this some insight into how InShapeMom became Mrs. MGrowOld with the names changed to protect the innocent?
February 12th, 2019 at 9:16 AM ^
Maybe.
But hey...If I made a call first it's all good right?
February 12th, 2019 at 9:32 AM ^
Stop crying, you're too mGrowOld for that shit.
How does it not make it right? This is proper etiquette in the majority of business fields in our country.
...now if you're salty about them LEAVING for a rival, that's an entirely different story.
Being mad at Day for handling this the right way when you could justifiably hate him for being a douche-faced Buckeye is just dumb.
You blaming Day for this is sour grapes.
February 12th, 2019 at 10:42 AM ^
I'm not getting the "sour grape" vibes from this. I understood MGrowOld's point to be that a call, by itself is not sufficient evidence that this was done right. Making a call, would seem to make it much more likely that this was done right, but it is theoretically possible to make a call and still not have done it correctly. It depends on what was said on the call.
"Just cause he made a phone call doesnt make it right."
February 12th, 2019 at 9:21 AM ^
"No Ted, that's not a problem at all. I was going to kick my wife out anyway and my daughter looks more like you than me, which has also made me questions some things. Take them both."
February 12th, 2019 at 9:32 AM ^
Your alternative ending is WAY better than mine. Nice job.
Gracias (pretty sure my Spanish spelling is better than my German)
