Hawaii wasn't as great that year as their record, but it is the only way the argument that the regular season is a playoff makes sense. If we want to think of the regular season that way, you have to accept that an undefeated team gets in before a 2-loss team, no? Otherwise it isn't a playoff at all, which is OK as well but then let's stop giving lip-service to that notion.
"Please people, don't vote against posts because of disagreement, however. Then there would be no point of having a board. Vote against something because it's a troll'ish or dick'ish response."
This is the key... if it happens the way you suggest, this will work very well.
You are absolutely correct that these things should be taken into account. If Michigan doesn't even offer the 5th ranked player in MI, and State gets him, so what? It is meaningless for the in-state recruiting debate.
None of us know, you are correct. But none of us really know the second part of your post... that UM guaranteed him he'd be a QB and Florida did not. One thing I am sure of... he'll have every opportunity to compete at QB from the start. If he is switched, it will be because he didn't win that competition, and he can help the team at another position.
I'm willing to accept the argument that the regular season is like a long playoff, with each game a potential eliminator for a team (actually, it is like a double elimination structure for most teams--lose once, you still have a chance, lose twice and you are in trouble) but would like to see a additional rules. For example, there should be a rule that no 2-loss team can play for the title when there is an undefeated team remaining.
I was qualified to give or dock points for about five minutes!! Then... I lost it. I guess I posted something people hate because I lost points! Aaarrrrrggg.... the humanity!!
It would give Gardner time to develop (redshirt?) and allow for quality depth at the position. After two years, if he is beaten out by both Tate and Gardner then perhaps he makes a move.
If we get Cullen Christian along with Avery and one other highly ranked DB (Knight, Grimes, Anderson) which is entirely possible (maybe likely) then what do we lose by not getting Mathis?
I don't think they will win either, but think they COULD win. OSU might be in the midst of a disappointing year. Imagine if they lose big to USC in the Shoe, and lose a couple of other Games along the way (they play at Penn State and then have Iowa at home leading up to the Michigan game). It is possible they come into the Big House and get out played.
"FWIW quite a few ND "recruiting mods" (not sure how to really describe them but talent evaluators I guess) are much more worried about where he will be lining up than forcier."
Isn't that just because there is no ambiguity for Tate (he is a QB or nothing and they KNOW where he'll be lining up) but lots of ambiguity for DRob (he is capable of playing many positions)?
Since none of us really knows what was "promised" or what will transpire between now and the end of the season, isn't it a bit presumptuous to suggest that if Robinson plays something other than QB it means he was lied to??
No, you are conflating recruiting and player development. It isn't hard to see who is winning recruiting wars. You simply look at players both schools wanted and see who gets them. By that metric, Michigan consistently wins the "recruiting wars" against State. State gets occasional guys (Gohlson) that Michigan wants, but more often takes guys Michigan didn't offer (Hill). Michigan frequently gets players offered by both.
Even with PA counted, it is a wash. This year (so far) we have two from MI, last year we had 4. This year we have two guys from Texas, two from Florida (with more to come), a guy from SC and a guy from Louisiana.
And the original premise of your point is flawed. There were decommits from all over last year, including one from Minnesota and one from MI (Big Will did re-commit), so why would we expect that recruiting the Midwest prevents "getting burned" by decommits. We had a couple decommits form Texas, but haven't stopped recruiting Texas.
RR is recruiting players he wants and they are (still) coming from all over.
There are 7 committed now from the Mid-West (didn't include PA of course) and we had 8 last year. We'll likely add a couple from the Mid-West to finish out the class, but will also have a couple more in the class total.
The upshot? No more Mid-West focus this year than last.
Leaders can't be simply appointed, either. Just to play devil's advocate, I think RR's system asks everyone to be a leader (or try) and then rewards those who actually led with the end-of-year recognition. I like it.
Rodriguez was a God in WV right up until he left, which tells me that WV fans are reacting entirely to his departure, per se, and not at all to his "character." Mercenary? His first HC job in D-1 was at WV, and he stayed there a long time, eventually jumping to Michigan (however you feel about him, WV, or UM, the Michigan job is a huge step up). Where is the mercenary???
But since you brought him up, the vest left Youngstown State under a cloud, and YSU would have had to forfeit their 1991 championship if the violations had been discovered before the four-year NCAA statute of limitations. The Clarett thing was a replay of the YSU issues, and so they are not isolated incidents.

A snarky post (by you) about redundant threads received a snarky post (by me) about hypocritically posting in said thread. That's pretty obvious. WTF is your problem?
[BTW, half of all the posts in this thread are by you. Good thing the OP happened, otherwise what would you do??]
He played in a spread in HS, shredded just about every NY high school record, and would likely be viewed as a back-up anyway. So yeah, Greg Paulus, come on down.
He has a big connection with Michigan--his dad was the football equipment manager when he went to UM!! There are pictures of Caleb as a young boy in the UM locker room trying on a winged helmet. I think he will come to Michigan.
Do you want an exciting, energetic basketball environment, or do you want a monastery? Geesh.
And weren't you the one calling for a super-awesome-cool jumbo-tron in the Big House?? Wouldn't that end the tradition of boring, pixilated scoreboards?

Florida State, the ACC tourney runner-up, "finessed" their way out of the tournament by losing to a "grind it out" no talent Wisconsin team. Hmmm... How is that possible??
