A lot of good advice in the opinions above. I went to a top-25 law school and graduated 10 years ago. I summered for top NY and DC firms, went to work for the DC firm for a limited amount of time and never practiced again. I have friends who went to Wayne and DCL and are partners in MI firms and have successful careers. Law school is a tool.
When I was interviewing I interviewed at a top DC firm where one of the associates got in my grill about if I thought I was special. He said when he interviewed he was top 3 in his class at Georgetown and lived with his parents for a year after graduating because the market was so bad. He was bitter because I was graduating in a good market and he graduated in a bad market. I got an offer at that firm.
Now is a bad market. I was part of an interview panel at a firm and it was very depressing. People were dying for any sort of job.
I will say this. Wayne State is well-respected as a top law firm in the region. If you can go there for 75% cost that is a pretty good deal. Iowa and Wisconsin are very good schools. MSU has a good school where you can make a go at it. Hopefully the market will be better by the time you graduate.
There is no right answer. You have a tough decision to make. But if you work hard, good things will come to you.
We need some words of encouragement from Bacari Alexander.
It is not surprising Burke is checking out his options. He was 2nd team all-American and Big 10 Freshman of the year. Smotrycz is upsetting, but won't end everything. Smotrycz had a tough year playing well in fits and starts. Smotrycz had a good game against Ohio marred by the last turnover. Smotrycz would have been a major contributor next year but alas he will contribute somewhere else.
Next year, you cannot deny the talent coming in. As opposed to Ammaker who never seemed to improve players once they got here,Beilein gets his players to play above their talent level. Future of Michigan basketball is bright. These transfers will not stop it. Best of luck to them. things don't always work out for players but these are good kids who represented the university well. But onward and upward. Bring me McGary and GR3 and queme los barcos.
The Big 10 usually has 8-9 teams in teams in the top 25 so almost every wrestler Russell wrestles is a talented wrestler.Doing this against the talent Kellen Russell has done this against is truly remarkable.
Four friends and I wore maize shirts in the 4th row behind the visitors bench in the 1995-1996 season. They always held 3 rows for visiting players' families and friends. It was our senior year and the first year they awarded tickets in the student section based on seniority and not first-come, first-serve. I wish I could take credit but it was my friend's idea. I don't have my shirt, but my friends do. We will send the pics to the email. If you watch any televised game (which in those days could always be seen on Raycom if not CBS, ESPN) they will show us.
We had our chances. We needed a little more luck on shots and a little more size. Hopefully a healthy Horford helps give us some more depth to play these guys. We can beat them at Crisler.
Tremendous night for the team and coaches that was well-deserved. I have never seen Laurel Manor that packed. A little disappointed in Desmond who is normally outstanding and a class act. Desmond went on a strange segue where he alluded to the prior coaching staff and administration's "strange decision making" and then compared it to marketers making consumers drink cherry coke instead of coke. Desmond did sit for hours signing autographs and was very complimentary of the current players and coaching staff. A great night featuring Desmond, Shoelace's MVP, some very classy senior speeches and a very cute scholarship award-winning female. Good times were had by all and a good night to cap off the regular season.
Besides maybe Brad Stevens, is there a coach who does as much with his roster than Belein accomplishes with his players, year in and year out?
Burke's play in Maui was incredible. To have a freshman step up the way Burke did, and keep a level head on that stage shows how big time this guy is going to be. Clear some space for Belein and Burke. They will get their due.
But it happens. I was disappointed but not as up in arms about this game. The boys played their skulls out in Maui and probably were a little tired. Virginia played tough d and had a talented big man. We shot pretty well, made some poor decisions but caught a bad streak. All in all, we didn't play our best, but didn't play bad either. I am not happy about this loss but ok with it.
With you about Hardaway, wish he played more in the first half. Seemed not able to get in a groove after the extended sit. Maybe I am more zen than I should be, but I am still very excited about this team's prospects.
Long trip back from Maui. Rough road game. Good defense. Good big man. Good coach. We can't afford to have Hardaway struggle during games or this is a likely outcome. On the bright side, Burke looked very good. Hardaway is tough. this team is tough. Better days ahead.
What a game. Student section (and whole stadium) was on fire. The fact the stadium gets loud adds a whole new dynamic. UTL was louder at the end, but OSU was loud the whole way through. "Beat Ohio" chant during OSU band was incredible. Favorite part for me was when "Don't Stop Believing" was playing and fans were aggressively shaking their yellow pom-poms to the song while singing loudly. Fearsome!
Whether it was intentional or not, by calling it Ohio, Hoke has created yet another dimension in the rivalry. With OSU being a university that is so full of itself, it insists on calling itself "The Ohio State University", Hoke undercuts them by just saying 'I have always called the Ohio' and gotten our entire fan base to do likewise. Listening to the "Beat Ohio" chant at the Nebraska game was amazing. Then hearing it in Maui brought it to a whole new level. Whether intentional or accidential, Mr. Hoke--pure genius.
The sightlines from every seat in Crisler aren't bad. Plus they have a mega-new scoreboard which mimics the football scoreboard (obviously much smaller, but same large video). Your view should be fine.
My season tickets are sec 216, row 35. Sec 206 are much more central, almost half-court. You are high, but should see fine.
Most importantly, the team is outstanding. You will like what you see.
Going from MSU and OSU couldn't be more different. No Whiskey tango, Nebraska fans are polite and smart about football. I was very impressed with their fans.
Many times state universities have special constitutional provisions. University of Michigan is most commonly called a special "creature" of the State of Michigan allowing it certain protections. Previous posts are correct that exemption from FOIA will not stop prosecutors from examining records, but it could prevent the public from ever seeing the records. It's too bad. FOIA should be limited to a state university. It's the citizens who are subsidizing it.
I'd like to take my wisdom from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's amazing, insightful album about challenges facing the blue collar working class. My feelings on the game are best summed up in "Atlantic City":
"Now I've been looking for a win, but it's hard to find. Down here it's just winners and losers and don't get caught on the wrong side of that line. I'm tired of coming out on the losing end. So last night I talked to Denard and I told him to stop throwing interceptions."--Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Atlantic City, Nebraska, 1982.
If Sharp, Snyder or Rosenberg wrote it, it's likely wrong. Working through "Three and Out" and so fired up that Brian took Rosenberg to task. Makes me like this blog even more.
Defense was ok, but Kovacs's presence was missed. Did we have any loose fumbles? Kovacs always seems to be making things happen. Hope he comes back soon.
Denard and Devin are two of the most dangerous playmakers in college football. When they are on the field together, they should scare the bejeezus out of opposing defenses. But Borges needs to recognize what we are, and what we are not. Using both as slash players with unpredictable explosive plays is effective. Muting both down to tepid, watered down, west coast bleh defeats the purpose. If we are going to put both on the field, pull the lid off the playbook and let's get them unleashed.
Yes we were outcoached, but Hoke admitted it. And 2 things. One, MSU had an extra week to prepare for us. Two, we still are getting the Big 10 bodies to once again play Big 10 football. A lot went wrong, but we almost won. Beginning of the season, I thought we had no chance in East Lansing. We are improving. We need to calm down.
Not a fan of the merry-go-round of uniforms. Michigan has tradition. Our uniforms and helmets use to bring fear just on sight to opponents. We need to get back there and get out of the gimmicks. The same thing driving the return to Bo philosophy, quotes, and imagery, should drive the uniforms. Back to basics.
Mattison did the same thing to Martin. He told Martin that he was a good player, but that Mattison coached NFL drafted players and Martin had to work harder to get drafted. Mattison is honest and drives these kids hard.
Hillman looks pretty good, real quick with great moves. He does make me worry after seeing EMU gash our defense in the first quarter, so we will see. We do have Denard.
Echo the comments about having 3 coaches, we have 3 guys who know what they are doing on the field and can explain it. Not to harp on last year, but there were times I thought GERG didn't know what was going on out there. He looked just as out of place as the players out of position.
One thing that makes our special teams less of a high-wire act is our receviers ability to cleanly field the ball. How many dropped balls did we have over the last 3 years? We lost the 2008 Notre Dame game somewhat because of turnovers.
Our kick coverage could stand to be better, yes it needs a lot of improvement. But not turning our receiving kicks over is a start. Also our tackling in special teams and defense is vastly improved. How often did you see players miss tackles last year? That hasn't really happened this year. It's getting better all the time...
We shouldn't have been ranked last year, but we were. We will be ranked. We don't deserve but we will take it. Hoke probably won't be happy about it, because Hoke recognizes the long way UM has to go to get better. One day we will deserve the ranking, but not today.
Watching the head fake, two plays come to mind. the first was Barry Sanders' head fake on Rod Woodson which caused Woodson to tear his ACL. The second was a bounce pass fake by Jalen Rose against UD-Mercy. It doesn't need to be stated, but Denard's pure athleticism is amazing.
It's a common theme on this page, but it's true. this defense is getting better. Tackling is improved. Blocking is improved. Coverage is improved. You can see the improvement. When Hoke and Mattison get their recruits in place, watch out.
Watched the replay of the defense for most of the first quarter. Two things of note:
1) Eastern's line is pretty good. On one 22 yard run, they bent Campbell backwards. Their line blocks well.
2) Our tackling is much improved. There are no metaphors which truly describe how bad last year's tackling was. But think about it. How often is our defense out of position or unable to make one-on-one tackles? This year that is not the issue. Our secondary might get beat. Our line might get blocked. But we don't miss tackles. That's a vast improvement.
All in all, the improvement continues. Now off to watch MSU-ND
The defense is at times painful to watch but they keep improving. Our defense didn't make goal line stances last year and they do now. It is roughly the same personnel that was the worst defense in the NCAA so I will take these difficult performances. Mattison continues to adjust and calm.
But I can't believe they didn't use sleds. Rich Rod wasn't eating a sandwich on the sidelines. Turn the page. It's a new team.
Comerica is a subpar venue for everything but baseball. Kid Rock even plays better in other places. I would be up for Ford Field for the 2016 Big 10 Championship.
they showed raw video of an Ann Arbor house party. A comment on the facebook page said, "haha wait, is this video a joke? thats a monday night in tallahasse." (sic) Ain't no party like an Ann Arbor party. No one ever confused Michigan with a party school.
I have been to a few SEC games. I went to the 2007 Auburn-Alabama game. That is intimidating. Fans are in their seats 45 minutes before the game screaming their heads off.
UTL was at that level. A week ago, Pop Evil introducing the players as they hit the banner coming out of the tunnel was not our best moment. But 7 Nation Army was loud, intimidating, and awesome. The fact UM fans didn't turn on this team and sit quiet is solid. But hats off to Dave Brandon and the administration for creating this kind of atmosphere. this has nothing to do with old school v new school. this is about involving the fans into a credible 12th man, building a reputation for being a tough environment to play in, and heightening the experience for the fans. It doesn't take anything away from the games.
Looking at our schedule, I don't think we are going to see a better receiver than Floyd. He is a Keyshawn Johnson-style beast who towers over a secondary. Our defense deserves a lot of credit containing him at all. If I remember right, at the UM-ND game two years ago, until Floyd got hurt in the 4th quarter he was unstoppable. Our defense backfield is all grownsup. Mattison continues to exude the calm and strength that our battered defense needs. I am liking this team.

Virginia is a good defensive team. Another very good road test for this tough Michigan team.
Not even close. Media got it right, coaches got it wrong.
but I will also never vote for Congressman Peter King.

UCLA is a good team. But UM looking good. Burke is already a force. We might have lost to Duke but we found our point guard.

But no one gives a post-game interview with as much eloquence as Kirk Cousins. Very articulate.

Nice little gem to let everyone know on national television. Quit your crying Cousins. You'll be wowing them soon enough at Toastmasters.
