I went to ND for undergrad. I'm sorry you guys had a bad experience. Most people who wind up going never want to leave---there's a term for it: "Domesick." We actually had a decent number of people transfer in from Northwestern because they found it depressing and were much happier at ND. But obviously, ND isn't for everyone. It's a good thing your daughter had an opportunity to visit since it sounds like it gave her an opportunity to see it wasn't for her.
Michigan is a good place to go as well but for contrasting reasons. Michigan people think ND is a terrible experience in part because South Bend sucks, which is a little like University of Minnesota people thinking people at the University of Michigan can't have a good time because the Huron isn't as good as the Mississippi. The river just isn't a huge factor for student life, just like at ND, the town just isn't very much a part of the student experience. So the fact that Ann Arbor is awesome and South Bend sucks matters less than you think it would.
