Paramus Catholic pipeline point

well taken. I'm also curious to se how UM keeps the pipeline flowing not just from PC, but all of North Jersey.

But parochial schools have been "raising tempers" recruiting high school players for years.  It's just that some people in this part of the state got their noses out of joint with Peppers and others, ergo the big deal made out of this situation. As another Jersey boy, Bill Parcells, used to say - losers always have excuses and that's what blew up the PC thing. Don Bosco lost Peppers when he tranferred.

You'll recall before the population shifts - Jersey Shore and Bergen County -  parochial schools in Bergen weren't even a twinkle in the eye of Jersey high school sports writers.   But have since become some of the leading football powerhouse programs in the nation - not just PC, but Don Bosco, St. Josephs, Bergen Catholic, St. Paul's (it's running back just committed to OSU) to name some and are constantly ranked among the top 25 by USA Today. The power schools in North Jersey were around the Newark area prior to the shift. In fact, the conference in which I played high school sports was called the Big Ten out of deference to the collegiate level conference. I always wanted to go to UM, but was too stupid - fortunately our two sons, inherited their mother's brain and graduted from UM.

Al that said, to only focus on PC as THE pipeline for North Jersey talent would be very short-sighted; analogous to solely recruiting out of Cass Tech, while ignoring the remainder of the Detroit Metro Area. Partridge and Michigan should know this; if not then Michigan's looking at North Jersey recruting through rose-colored glasses and did not get full value with his hire.

fwiw reply to superstringer wondering

if "someone at WSJ is a UM alum . . ."

Sam Walker, is the top sports editor at the Journal and an alum.

That said, I can assure you if Walker and staff thought JUB's piece did not merit editorial review and approval, it never would have seen the light of day, regardless.

I believe Sam has authored several books too.

The operative word is

patience. Recall at the beginning of the seaon JB pleaded for people to have some and let these kids. His vision was clear from the outset that these frosh needed some time to develp and pay dividends. And Sunday provided evidence of this as well as his coaching prowess.

For someone like me

who is not very digitally savvy, their are several things I appreciate. First, I value the democracry of the site and the willingness to allow a wide variety of people to voice opinions and thoughts, while at the same time, protect that priviledge regardless of agreement or not.

Secondly the incredibe thoughtfulness and detail in breaking down strategies of the teams/games/sports, the insights across many topics, the BD situation, posts from pressers, the jokes, the willingness to help people with questions about UM etc., but you already know that. For only being a fan, I can't overstate how impressive mgoblog is.

On a final note, while only a fan our two kids are proud alums - when I read this blog, sending them to UM reminds was the best investment my wife and I made. For those of you who are alums, I hope you appreciate the opportunity you had. Truly, mgoblog reflects UM, the leaders and the best.

Without question...

Brian nailed it- great read!  Only thing, after reading about the Brandon's total mismanagement as AD, I felt the need for another shower today.

The best thing Rockind

Meyer and Wilcher can do for Weber now is develop a statement that ends this story quickly.  One that tries to get him above the bullshit saying something like, that while I was disappointed my recuritment coach has moved on to another opportunity and I was looking forward to working with him. However, at the end of the day I have committed to The Ohio State . . .

Having said that, all this crap has not been lost on Harbaugh and Dantonio recruiting 2016. Perception is reality and the perception out there now that JH MD will leverage - right or wrong - is you cannot trust Meyer.

I have no problem

with Weber signing an OSU LOI.  He's entitled to choose wichever school he wishes to attend. We basically all did that as 17/18 year-olds- we chose a school.

What frosts my ass is Meyer's seemingly flippant comment: I had a conversation with Mike and it's time to move forward.

I view the tone of that satement as essentially Meyer basically saying I really don't give shit about Mike Weber and fuck you Michigan we have your #1 recruit, you don't.

I will now have to dust off

my signed Tyrone Wheatley  NY Giants jersey which been closeted since he left NY,

Glad he's back - best of luck to him. Go Blue!

Maybe Harbaugh's taking a page out of Bo's book

Maybe Harbaugh's taking a page out of Bo's book.  When Bo came to Michigan he laid down the law and got of the "locker room lawyers" treating everyone equally - like dogs.  It won't be long before you see that same hard edge with Harbaugh-coached teams.

Assuming all the criticism is

correct, i.e.recruiting targets, inexperience, rebounding, points in the paint and defense etc. And yes, this may be a down year. But it just doesn't seemed like a Beilein coached team - not negging JB, just saying that's how it looks when you watch.

These guys just seemed to be satisifed to come down the court and chuck up threes.  That said, what kind of disturbs me is what appears to be an unwillingness by Beilein to adjust his lineup and game schemes beyons just shuffing guards to leverage the two bigs and play them simultaneously.

I don't understand why he refuses to play his two bigs simultaneously (I get it about his guard-ortiented philosophy, but jeesh). It seems like his idea of adjustments this year is basically shuffling the guards netting the same non-result.

He continues to use that small guard lineup with no one taking it inside, no points in the paint, out rebounded offensively or defensively. It's like he's sitting there just waiting for shots to drop and it hasn't happened for weeks. That will not cut in the B1G. It was clear that Purdue consistently grabbed the ball above the small Michigan lineup even when Michigan had better position.

I've never seen what appears to be JB resistant to change things up and leaning the "we're a young team" rationale to explain away loses - seems I've heard that somewhere before.

Possible Mattison

named assistant head coach? Runs out the clock on his contract at Michigan and hangs it up?

Manning was coaching RBs

at Cincy and then ay NIU, but only better . . ./s

The team number

concept is neither new, nor unique to Michigan as has been pointed out here several times.

Further evidence of other team number usage, when my son entered the training program to become a special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration his class was assigned number BA 176 - - the 176th Basic Agent class.

That small gesture does give an individual a sense of team - a connection to something beyond   the individual and a link to all the teams that came before. I also think we should keep it as it serves more to re-enforce Bo's concept of the team than it was used by Hoke and therefore bad.  Far too shortsighted - we're better than that.

Thanking Schlissel the classy way

Student demonstration in front of Schlissel's house to fire Brandon is fine, but would be classy if students gathered there to thank him.

totally

agree  about Fangio - Jints' D needs work. and a change  O on right track with Ben McAdoo.

In addition to Schefter, Schwartz,

as I live in the NYC metro area, possible you can add a few WFAN Sports Talk Radio gasbags to your list who were dismissive and derisive of Hackett and his approach to securing Harbaugh? s/ Specifically - -

Marc Malusis: started as a gopher for morning coffee for Mike Francesa and Chris Mad Dog Russo and who for some whoa begotten reason the station assumed he qualified to be on air as a sports pundit.  He trashed Hackett for using the same search firm as the Jets clearly exposing his misunderstanding of how a search firm work in that it is the client who makes the hiring decision not the head hunter.

Kim Jones, Malusis on air parot, er partner, -- see above. Jones is still trying to figure out the difference between a hot rock and a hockey puck. Why she is even sitting at a mic defies any iota of logic. Together they are classic dumb and dumber.

And finally Boomer Esiason, who like all the other NFL pundits said noway Harbaugh will leave the NFL for college.

So, what building

will be dubbed Hackett Hall?  Well done, Mr. Hackett!

Yes, indeed,

alum96 - Game On!

Does the Huge

air over Sirius/XM satellite radio?  If so, station number?

Thanks

Brian, there is a point, maybe moot now, that

I thought was overlooked in all the searchbits including all the back and forth posts about the evil Raiders undercutting Michigan, i.e. Radiers getting approval to speak with Harbaugh is that the relationship with the League office/owners and the Raiders (especially Al Davis) is probably even more sour and much more contentious than between the Niners and Harbough.

The irratic in-your-face behavior by Davis created issues for the League during the 80s that at one point went all the way to U.S. Congress, threatening the NFL with loss of operating exemption. Tension remained high when Davis filed a host of legal actions surrounding the toggling between L.A. and Oakland and other things.  Davis was/is viewed as a prick by the league and many owners. Those owners, many of who were around during the Davis salad-days, have long memories. Goodel, too, was around then, so I doubt the League is going out of their way to help the Raiders secure Harbaugh.

I wouldn't worry too much

about the NY Giants entering the Harbaugh sweepstakes. Giants HC Coughlin is most likely returning, especially if this current three-game winning trend continues and beating Philly Sunday to wind up 2014 on a positive note, potentailly bodes well heading into next season. In addition, Giants management is more deliberate and conservative when it coms to firing coaches and GMs.

No matter what happens Sunday, no way the Giants want to expose Eli and the O to a third offensive scheme in as many years by firing Coughlin. Further, Eli and OC Ben McAddo get along well and the O-team likes him as well. They're just getting comfortable with his scheme.

As such, prevailing thought around NY is that Coughlin returns. McAddo's groomed to take over as HC after another year as OC under his belt with Coughling riding off into the sunset after the 2015 season.

another pair of Jackasses

WFAN, NY sports talk radio B-team windbags, Kim Jones, who couldn't tell the difference between a hockey puck and a hot rock with her equally ill-inform gasbag, Marc Malusis, this morning were bashing and derisive of UM going after JH.

They mocked the JH Bday card as UM starving/hard-up. They continued and ridiculed the university (Hackett) as stupid for and unnecessarily hiring the same excutive search firm the Jets used to hire its currently embatteld GM. These two clowns clearly have no idea how a search firm works - i.e. who is responsbile for the actual hire and literally no insight into UM.

They argued just get a football guy to hire a coach - hmm how did that just work out.  And before that we had an executive-type hiring a coach - that went well.

I just love how everyone just keeps piling on.

Best of luck to

Nuss - really had a tough row to hoe.  So props for trying.

But if you look at it; Harbaugh is an offensive-minded HC and like Nuss, an NFL QB.  So I would think there is some redundancy there, and I think Nuss saw that writing on the wall.

Send them all

(including NY sports radio talk pundit Boomer Esiason) a photo with a sunny-side up egg super imposed over their faces if we get JH. It was posted on this board by someone a couple days ago.  Sorry can't I remember who, or when, but it was great to see the egg on that reporter's face.

what will

happen will happen, what won't happen won't happen. JH's signaling will come to Mich, NFL won't happen

I interpret "what will happen will happen,

. . . what won't happen won't happen" as: will be coming to Michigan, and won't be staying with the SF/NFL

Drew Sharp - beyond contrarian

This guy writes for clicks, not journalistic integrity.  If I was the UM school of journalism I would be embarrassed to even admit he is an alum, and would rescind his degree.

He posted this column this afternoon

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/drew-sharp/2014/12/17/michigan-football-drew-sharp/20534463/

Yes, the idea today in bigtime collegiate sports is to make money, but there’s a right way and wrong way – one with class vs fast food crass.  He just flat out missess the point.

The pizza mentality of Dave Brandon was the wrong way.  And you don’t improve or sell product by denigrating the key driver or attributes – the players in this case.

Hackett's swim lanes

will tell him to give Harbaugh until first week of Jan before chnaging lanes to the next candidate for myriad reasons already discussed on the board. No need to rush it - more important to get this next HC hire right.

Scratch Coughlin

the consensus in NY is 99.9% sure Coughlin will be back.  No way are the Jints are putting in three offensive schemes in three years and subject Eli to that. Besides Eli and the team are getting more comfortable with the offense and like McAdoo.

Prevailing thinking is Coughlin does one more year, retires and McAdoo moves up to HC retaining offensive consistency, especially with a standout receiver like Beckham who many tout as Rookie of the Year.

Get some bigs

just don't use them for practice window dressing.  Not a talent issue.

We're undersized, a Beilein-system charactistic. Interestingly Beilein will compliment teams with bigs, i.e. how well they play against us, yet he has trouble making that systemic adjustment. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks, as they.

Someone posted earlier

that the interesting thing about the HC search is that little has leaked out. That said-

aside from a flight tracker, (blocked I understand) rumors, or so-called sources, are there any other Hackett-spying efforts, or tracking tactics employed to obtain information on the status?

No Bigs.

No inside game.

Bigs just not in Beilein's basketball DNA. w/o a Burke or Stauskas these guys are just another undersized team firing away from beyond the arch and praying for them to drop.

CMOs like Lochmann

only understand promotion. Unlike Lochmann, good CMOs include a mix of advertising, promotions and public relations.  And top CMOs know how to effectivley incorporate and blend these components into a total marcoms package either at the product, services or corporate level of their company.

Not to nitpick, but advertising can be entertainment - recall, I think it was Folgers coffee company that ran a series of cleverly tasteful TV vignettes about a young couple living in the same apt. bldg with one who was out of coffee, inviting each to have a cup - it had everyone wondering will they, or won't they get together. The series was quite entertaining and had a huge following. AXE personal care products also leveraged an entertainment platform. So advertising can be entertaimment while providing information/selling. Even the university advertises its attributes - question is a matter of taste.

That said, Lochmann is a low-level CMO who only understands the promotional aspect of marcom model and is not strategic in any sense of the word.  He is a direct reflection of the meager skills set requirements sought by a Brandon-type guy - tactical promotions. His type is well suited to the pizza mentality of a Dave Brandon or NY Knicks or any professional sports marketing model for that matter. Both of these entities - Dominos/NY Knicks - engage in cheap crass promotions, e.g. bogos, first 500 people at the gate get a free Knicks photo of team Prez, Phil Jackson sitting courtside etc. They only see fans as ATM machine, much like Brandon/Lochmann treated students, alumni and fans. So the universuty got what it paid for - a low level one-dimentional promoter with a single frame of reference and insensitive to the college community and environment, not a strategic marketing executive.

Clearly putting winged helmets on the hood of a Caddy anchored inside the stadium during a game doesn't qualify as strategic advertising, nor does promoting to come have your marriage ceremony on the Block M (I suppose Lochmann believes that's how you protect the longevity of the brand /s) stand as marketing genius. It cheapens the brand regardless of how many dollars that stunt generated.

And certainly for a CMO to make as stupid a comment as he did to Sports Business Daily indicates does not understand public relations.  Nor do I believe Lochmann was trained to speak with media, else he would not have delivered such a derisive quote, creating another public relations embarrassment.

My question to Hackett: Did someone prep him? That is was he informed what are the core department/university messages (not talking bullshit here, but clear concise messages that reflect the unversity's point of view it wants to convey to its constituents); was he prepped how to answer questions properly before being sent to do media interviews? If he was and still did this, if I were Hackett I'd be kicking his ass up one side and down the other while showing him the door.

BUT worse if Hackett abdicated his role (refused to do the interview) as the key spokesperson by sending Lochmann out there with little or no prep, or for whatever reason, if I was Schlissel I'd be all over Hackett for exposing the university like that.

It's like a never ending soap opera with this university of late - - -

Could it be Pittsburgh's

Mike Tomlin who might be on shakey ground?  Best year was 2008 SB win and last two seasons were 8-8 and this year is 7-5 so far.  If he goes 8-8 again it may be adios with Steelers owner and fans getting restless.  And Cowherd stilll has close sources in Pittsburgh.

Maybe Baalke

missed getting his first HC choice, Parcells, because he was talking to a guy named Parcell and had to settle for Harbaugh? s/

Paying Jim

8 million per when Michigan economy is still in the toilet and you're rasing tuition may be a recipe for another AD/university PR disaster both exteranlly and internally - just what we need.

Pay him 6 mill or whatever it takes to make him the highest paid coach in the B1G and load it up with incentives. That may strike the balance Schlissel and Hackett proclaim they seek.

For the

what-have-you done-for me lately crowd, in order to justify his future pay if he comes to UM; I believe Harbaugh is second in NFL wins after Belichick these past three years.

Heard Brian Griese's taped phoner

comment on ESPN's Mike &Mike show this morning not wanting Harbaugh as UM's next HC because JH is devisive yadda, yadda. I get JH is a lightening rod - either you love him or hate him, but was surprised and perhaps disappointed to hear that from Griese. It was a pretty negative position.

Then I thought, shit, is Griese part of the so-called Carr cabal that helped sabotage the football program and will resist needed changes to bring Michigan into today's world?

So is Griese part of that faction in the AD who's sole purpose is to create discord in order to retain their power-base?

Wonder if Griese was on that pre-presser conference call Hackett had with former players and others?  If so, Griese needs to get with the swim-lane program.

Maybe some on here are more knowledgeable about that than I.

Of the three obvious potential NFL

Of the three obvious potential NFL  coaching openings - Oakland, Jets, Giants - and as desperate as NFL owners are to win, why would they be so quick to give up draft pics for Harbaugh when they can just sit tight?   And most likely there will be additional head coaches looking for a job at season's end increasing the number horses on the typical year-end coaching carousel from which owners can choose this year.

Even if SF becomes insufferable for both owner and coach, the Niners are not going to negotiate a buy-out and let JH just walk away and go to another team without some compensation, either in pics, cash or combo of same.

On the flip side of that same coin, JH is not walking walking from all those NFL dollars, resigning to return to the NCAA as much as I would like to see him at UM.

So we have a high-stakes game of chicken here and to keep us from chasing shadows we should all sit tight and let it play out.

age should not be a

disqualifier for Miles.  At 61 if he has his health 10 years at UM is not a stretch. Lot's of people are working at a high performance level, some running highly complex organizations well into their 70s.

If Harbaugh goes to the Jets

with his personality the NY media will make SF look like a tea party and Harbaugh wishing he'd  gone to Oakland

Unlike Hoke who would've walked to AA

it seems Jimmy will go first class on a private jet to take the HC job - - yes!

Thank you alum96

Wojo

and Sharp the epitomy of fair and balanced journalism.

The point made by

The point made by one poster regarding the need for a leader who's run a large complex organization, e.g. his Mulally example is well taken. As further noted the nature of athletics departments today are such they require the characteristics of a successful corporate leader type.

But in my view that's only half of the equation necessary to achieve success as an AD.  The AD's position requires a hybrid type of leader, if you will. While industry-specific experience may, or may not, produce success - again Mulally, the AD spot requires a person who understands both the executive bottom-line corporate world drivers, and at the same time not only understands, but has a feel and respect for the nuances that drive academic institutions, while integrating both of those skillsets into a succesfully managed athletics department.

That's a tall order and will take time identify that individual.

Some guys are saying 15 minutes is no big deal

Some guys are saying 15 minutes is no big deal.  Tell that to the UM athletes who were penalized by NCAA-hypocrites when the football team failed to include the 15 minute warm-up period within the total daily practice time allowed, not to mention all of the other affects it had on the university.

So, the NCAA had grave concerns about student athlete welfae when it comes to 15 minute practice overages, but it's OK for ESPN to push an already late tip-off back 15 minutes? Where's the outrage?  The NCAA needs to stop with the student-athlete charade as it chases dollars with its ESPN partner at the expense of the student-athlete.

And the NCAA is miffed why people think they're a joke??? Check the mirror.

Despite its warts, that's why . . .

I love this university - Hatch, Randolph et al - unlike the SEC that takes a kid's scholarship.

The leaders and the best. Go Blue!

For better or worse, we were married to Hackett . . .

For better or worse, we were married to Hackett in this shotgun wedding. He was appointed by Schlissel to right the ship and all likelyhood will hire the next football HC.

I don't think we've seen enough from Hackett to discern if he has the right mix of administrator/executive skills to meet the needs of an athletics department in today's college world (playing for Bo does not qualify as a required skill-set).

That said, I don't have too much of an issue with him, sans the Brandon pizza promotion menatlity, cleans house where necessary, allows people to do their job and makes the right football HC hire (translation: hopefully hire Harbaugh).

Regardless if Hoke wins Saturday; he's gone. Absent the bowl appearance, Hackett has sufficent time to close the loop on the right HC hire, as I find it hard to believe that there are not back channel feelers out there already.  We all know that typically good jobs postings, per se, are never seen in public, or if posted is often a facade of the behind-the-scenes hiring process.

Keep the faith - GO BLUE!! Kick dem Buckeyes' asses!

Happy Thanksgiving.

Without

Without question Harbaugh would quickly turn around the Michigan ship and rapidly develop Morris, Speight and Malzone into quality UM QBs - the question is to what degree.  Gardner would be another question despite Harbaugh's coaching acumen.

I say this with all due respect and in defense of Devin, but he was never a QB at the university level, nor do I believe he would be in the NFL. To be very clear this is not a criticism nor trashing of Devin Garder, nor apology.  It is only my perception after watching this kid give his all to the university - there was never a lack of effort by him. Kudos to him for that.

Gardner was unfortunatley miscast at UM (inability to evaluate talent) from the getgo despite the athleticism he displayed at the high school level - poor QB skill sets - footwork, release point, reading defenses, decision making, feel for the pocket and accuracy did him in at Michigan.  At the high school level where player development is uneven, his superior athleticism masked poor QB skills required to attain success at the next level.

True, Gardner attended QB camps to improve on those skills and still regressed, albeit coaching was of no help when he returned for the season's start. While he got high marks at those camps, under live game pressure the hoped for development of those QB skills was never apparent. (Yes, he had that one great passing year - an outlier, maybe, looking at it now).

But he always seemed to be a better runner than passer, and was so beat up these past two years he couldn't rely on his feet. That coupled with undeveloped (or non-existent) QB skills he couldn't possibly excell, ergo miscast as a QB.

There is no doubt Devin was/is a tough kid and represented UM exceptionally well, especially with his outstanding off-field community service.  Earned his UM degree(s) and his future is bright. He was the unquestioned team leader. I hope that will be his legacy.  I wish him well.

Interesting how ESPN

puts the screws to UM.  9 o'clock tip is late enough, but to delay to 9:45 gives the West coast Ducks an advantage - thank you Phil Knight.

Why

the suspense?  Why let Hoke twist in the wind?  Let Hoke know now he is finished after the season - bowl or no bowl.  Have a little compasion and fairness for this guy and his family and the players as well.

As Hoke and the players have repeatedly noted all season despite all the adversity there is great chemistry and no quit by the team, and the players love Hoke. If true, we should then see no drop off in intensity or effort for these two remaining games - reference Hagerup's letter.  The players will want to send Hoke out on a high note.

Hoke knows he's gone; he's not stupid, the players know it - the world knows it, except Hackett and Schlissel.   Pussilanimous leadership and platitudinous emails are not marks of decisive leadership.
