Best post of the year. Win,…

Best post of the year. Win, lose, or draw this statement will always be true.

Call me a conspiracy theorist...

...But why is Urban Meyer and OSU's name inconspicously absent in this podcast?  Rutgers seems like Mich/OSU Proxy war.  Rutgers is like OSU's east Germany.

Rutgers should be worried about Penn ST and/or Maryland.

When ever would the very best players in New Jersey go to Rutgers?  It has nothing to do with Michigan.  It's a decision about a kid's future.  Would you trust that future to Rutgers?  They haven't earned that trust.

This podcast is spoken from the perspective that somehow Rutgers is on equal footing with not just Michigan but with any school in the Big Ten.

It comes off delusional.

I wish he could

I wish he could play forever.  It's sad to see him go.  But what a great example for all Michigan Men/Women in this world.  An absolutely class act.  Charles Woodson and people like him are the reason why Michigan is such a special place.

God Speed #2.

I'm also happy... ...that Greg Mattison won't be back. I know he's been lauded here, but he's an overrated coordinator. His defense is the least clutch I have seen. All year when they've needed a big stop they don't get it and mostly because of the called D. I'm thankful for the foundation that he built but like 97 it will take someone else to make them elite.
Mags
O47 1 10 Ace twins twin TE 1 2 2 4-3 under Run Zone stretch Smith 2
This is Smith(-3) as Cole(+2) easily seals away a DE who went upfield at the snap, which creates a nice lane to the outside that is his first priority. He insanely cuts inside this block, which just barely works as Miller got a draw-ish against the NT but that cut robs Mags of an angle; Mags(-1) didn't do so well even so.

Brian,

I don't know if I fully agree with your assement of this play.  I think Smith is fine cutting inside, especially considering that Utah is trying so hard to keep contain that the stretch of the play creates a nice lane, and Smith easily breaks the arm tackle of the Ute lunging at him.

To me the problem here is that Magnison makes one of the laziest blocks I have seen this year.  And when people get on the coaching staff, and specifcially Funk, this is where accountablity has to come into play.  Maybe they didn't see it live, but there is no denying it on film, and I hope Mags got his butt chewed out for that.  It just is not good enough for any level of football.

And it's plays like this that are killing Michigan.  If Mags can actually engage with his block there instead of completely whiffng, then this play at the least is a first down, and maybe more, maybe even a shot at the redzone in the 3rd quarter of a game in which you are down 2 scores.  Instead it is shit nothing.

To your point Brian, maybe you are right, and Smith screwed up Mags by not taking the right hole, but I tend to believe it was on Mags solely.

Let's be honest...

There are academics and there are footballs "degrees."  The truth of the matter is that Michigan's engineering program is no joke, and frankly Hand probably cannot pursue football as a career, and engineering at our school.  At Alabama?  Sure.  Hand made a career decision today, he chose football.  Unfortunately for us Alabama is the Harvard of football degrees now.  I'll give us this credit, we were honest with the kid, if you want to pursue football as a career, here is our sport management department -- it is top notch.  At Saban U they'll give lip service to allowing an engineering degree.  I like that we have a program that will look a kid in the face and be honest with them.  Hand is not a Michigan Man - next kid up.

The question for this team...

...as it stands now is will there be any playmakers on offense?  Funchbunch, maybe Devin Gardner (if he is still at UM), and D. Smith (unless D. Green decides he wants to play in the Big 16) are the most likely candidates.  For this team to truly achieve they are going to need a superstar on O that makes other coaches game plan for.  Brady needs to find his Braylon.

I suppose it is way, way to early to even think these things though.

What a great line....

"10,000 alumni and 74,000 truck drivers."  No one would ever say such a thing in the corporate, buttoned-up world we live in.  But is there a better way to discribe The Ohio fanbase?  I think not.

Wow...

...That is really great.  It should be put up in the locker room.

I am surprised... ...by the mich line. I thought that it would have been +3, +3.5 at the most. Buckeyes are notorious for putting a lot of money on OSU that influence the spread. I am biased being a mich fan and I don't ever bet on them. But Mich is probably the best bet on the board. You watch, the sharps are going to bet blue ATS or maybe even play the moneyline. Mich is a bad match up for the bucks in almost every way. 4.5 is a ton of points to give such a balanced team.
Times have changed It's funny when i was at Mich which wasn't all that long ago they didn't have enough student tickets. Some freshmen only got partial game plans. Maybe too it was b/c we could sell our tickets that the student section was always filled.
Prediction:

We'll be very proud of this team and school before, during, and after the game.

That's a cool... That's a cool story coach tells at the end. I felt the team was different those last 4 games watching them. It makes sense.
Thanks for posting. Much appreciated. Go Blue!
I remember when...

...the Big Ten and the Pac 10 where the last holdouts to not have conference tourneys.  It was great b/c like football the regular season meant so so much more.  I've always hated the tourney it is a pure money grab plan and simple.  I'd much rather see the Big ten play everyone twice, and if they need the exposure just extend their season.  But that's me, I'm sure some of you would disagree.

Well...

It was a pretty weak joke to begin with.

I wonder if he is related to

Art Vanderlay of vanderlay industries.

Yes...

...but you certainly have enough time to log in, and bitch about it.  Do you ever think your bitching is really what is wasting your time?...and ours.

Well from the rumors I hear...

...And take it FWIW, but that would be part of the deal.  Texas Home athletics would not appear on the Big Ten Network.  UT would agree to a smaller percentage of gross from the Big Ten Network, and the Longhorn Network would stay Texas alone.

The Big Ten Network would still recieve its .50 per household on footprint states on basic cable deal, or whatever it is, with the State of Texas as part of that footprint.

UT has 3 options:

1) Become independent, which long term is not a good plan, too much risk.

2) PAC-12 which is fine, however it is kind like the BIG 10 lite.

3) Big Ten.

Honestly staying with the Big 12 w/out A&M is really not an option.  You might as well become independent, why give away revenues to 8 other schools if they aren't giving you anything in return?

I agree...

...why does everyone want to mess with it.  Its worked for 100 years.

What is worse to me is the talk of adding another playoff team.  Talk about devalueing the reg season at that point.

OSU fans swear there will be no LOIC...

...But at this point it is hard to believe that.  I mean if their athletic department doesn't fit that shoe, who does?

I'd really like to see the OSU...

...fanbase go a whole season with nothing but the like's of althelets like Till on their roster.  After losing games to the likes of Indiana we'll see how fast they say who the "real" Buckeyes are.  The fact that this is the one guy to come out and say "I wasn't doing it," speaks volumes.  Laughable man!!!  Their ship is sunk.

Damn...

That's a hell of a thing to say.

It's not like he said something like I'm interested in broading my horizons, or intereted in finding new oppurtunities.

He said about tO$U what you say about your friend in high school who smokes weed all the time after you've decided to get your GPA up so you can get into college.

Yikes.

Nice.

Wow...

Confrontational much?

I'm glad you like him.  He is just hit or miss for me.  I don't think that is worth calling me an asshole over.  It is just my opinion.  Chill out.

This news is frustrating...

...and shortsighted.  (Although obviously nothing is final till its final).

The Big Ten footprint has the possiblities of using several different NFL venues, such as Philly, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincy, Detroit, GreenBay, Minnesota, and Kansas City (biggest city close to Nebraska??).

Why limit yourself when you could have your game be a mid-western superbowl?  It just seems lazy and boring to keep it in one place.

Also could Delany at least show the mildest concern for the economic well being of the rust belt.  I mean sure it wouldn't help out Detroit in any way if Michigan or Michigan State was playing in Ford Field for a chance at the title.

Good for you Dr.

I don't care about how touchy this board is.

George W. Bush is human excrement and deserves ridicule.

Jim Tressel shows his true nature by aligning himself with such a horrible person.

Keep on posting brother.

Go Blue!

I just emailed

like 10 people that.  Strong first post.  Thanks.

It ain't that long...

...And after the capital one bowl it seems even closer.

If Hoke...

...can get some quality PT out of Big Will it will be a huge boost to this team.  It was one of the things that really hurt RichRod.

How about Q and Will in the middle against bama in 2012?  They could turn that game for us if they develop.

Misnomer...

…regarding BH that Brian mentioned is that the is a Gary Patterson type coach, but if you look at his teams he has won with offense.  I think it is the biggest hole in the argument of Hoke=Carr.  BH is not adverse to open it up.

One thing that really scares me about Brady’s past is that Brian Kelly owns him.  We will see if the balance changes on a bigger stage, but Brady really struggled to keep Kelly’s offense out of the endzone at Ball State.  The Cardinals scored some too in the those games, but not enough to win.

I do think though if given time Hoke will  consistently do well in conference.  JMHO. we will see.

This post is more than fair...

...and I agree with most of what you are saying,  Brian.  I suppose the one assumption that I am on a wait and see approach is that Hoke = Carr in scheme and philosophy.  As a person who jumped off the RR bandwagon around Penn State, I am firmly on the Hoke wagon until evidence to the contrary.  It is the only reasonable way to be IMHO.

As for Brandon his stock cannot be lower for me.  I don’t mind people being politic as long as its done in a stealth like fashion.  Basically I don’t mind if there is a person behind the curtain as long as the show is good.  DB looked like a rank amateur in this process and it reflected poorly on the school.

Good reading your stuff as always Brian.  No matter what happens the autumn will still be a joy to watch Michigan football.

I agree...

...Plus Mulling coach at Notre Dame, and Miama of Ohio.  He has recruited the area before, has relationships with High Schools.  Obivously too coaching at Florida he has experience at a big time college program.  Mullen could be a really good choice, I'd be happy with him.

I live in SoCal...

...and have friends who played for SDSU.  Chuck Long did not have a talented group.

I understand your relunctance.  Believe me I do.  I personally would be willing to give Hoke a shot, I like how much he likes Michigan.  You would not.  That's fine.

However my original point still stands.  Patterson is not as strong of a candidate as Hoke is for Michigan.  That is my point.

I'm glad to hear it...

...I mean there are some great candidates out there.   Dan Mullen would be a guy I'd love to see interview.  But to make Hoke out to be the worst hire ever isn't true.  I can understand why the fanbase is relunctant to accept him, but he is not that awful.  And seriously when people go crazy over a guy like Patterson, I really scratch my head.

What are you talking about?

Hoke rides on the coattails of who?  Look at the records of Ball State and SDSU before Hoke got there.  Those programs were in shambles.

Again you might not like Hoke, but honestly if you compare him to Patterson he is a much, much better option for Michigan.

And nice quote you sited there.  He could be talking about any school in America.  "Pheonix Online University has a great tradition and is a great university." -Gary Patterson

You made my point for me with that little nugget.  Thank you.  Let's get a coach in here who knows how great Michigan is, not canned coach speak.

I disagree...

...Patterson's record is misleading.  He has never had to prove it outside of his TCU bubble.  Hoke has turned around 2 dreadful programs.  Hoke is a much better candidate for the Michgian job compared to Patterson.

Tell me how is Patterson a better candidate than Hoke?

Did Patterson build his program?  No, Dennis Franchonie did.  Patterson stepped into a perfect situation.  Furthermore TCU has a clear advantage by not having to recruit against any other Texas schools in conference.

Did Hoke build his program?  Yes, SDSU hadn’t made a bowl game since 98.  They hadn’t won a bowl game since 69.  Go look back at the historical records of SDSU.  It is a wasteland of college football.  If you give Hoke ten years at SDSU he’ll be doing the same things Patterson is doing now.

Furthermore Patterson has no experience whatsoever recruiting the Midwest.  He has no ties at all to Michigan High Schools, or Ohio, or Indiana.  He has never coached outside of Texas for the last 10 years.  Look at theTCU roster.  How many out of State players do they have? About 10.

Hoke recruited for Michigan, and Ball State.  He knows the area, has the personal connections, understands the culture.  Furthermore Hoke used to recruit California under Carr.  He was responsible for bringing in Tom Brady.  He is not a joke as a recruiter; he’s just been at two really difficult places to recruit to.

Thirdly Patterson has no passion for Michigan football.  He’ll have the same blank stare that RichRod had when asked about the OSU rivalry.  Hoke needs no instructions of what our traditions are and why they are.

Look you may not like Hoke, fine.  But to say somehow Patterson is a better fit for Michigan is laughable.  Patterson is a defensive version of Rich Rodriguez all over again.  Just because he beat Wisconsin once doesn’t mean he’ll have success in the big ten.

I’d be fine with Brady Hoke.  They guy will be on everybody’s radar in 3-5 years.  Get him now.

I disagree...

...look at the schedule.  They need 1 big resume win.  And then tread water in the Big Ten which they will, and they are in.  They have 11 wins already.  9 more with there RPI and they're in.  But you are entitled to your opinion.

If they some how find a way...

...to win this one then we probably go dancing.  I know long shot but you never know, I still remember Duke from 2 years ago.

I'm really starting to love this BB team, they're so young and flawed, but at the same time they don't seem to know that.  I really hope for their success.  Go Blue!

I also respect the bring back RR...

....opinion, and I suppose what I am getting at is after all this feet dragging (if it is in fact feet dragging which it might not be, time will tell) the only decision left is bring in a new coach or extend RR.  And at this point if DB decides on the latter I would be okay with that as long as its definitive i.e. a full extension and full support, and ultimately correct i.e. wins.  And if either of this two goal are not accomplished I will think a lot less of DB as a leader.  He has made this his all defining moment by his actions.

(I fully agree that you cannot just bring RR back though, if he comes back it must be a committment, if not ground hog day on this stuff.  Yuck.)

I know its a horse that's been...

...beaten to death.  But if Brandon brings RR back after all this I'm going to think a lot less of Brandon, and not because I am a RR hater (although I do favor bringing in Harbaugh).  Its just you've got to be more decisive in a leadership position, right?  It isn't fair to RR and his staff do limit their ability to perform their job, and then again next year we'll have to go through the same thing (unless the team exceeds very high expectations).  Obviously I am holding out judgment, but this is it, this what Brandon's whole legacy will be based on, and I'm a little concerned he is stalling instead  of making the tough decision.  New coach or extend RR.  At this point I'm fine with either, I just want it definitive, and correct.

Rodfather,

This post made my morning.  I'm glad some people still have a sense of humor around here.  +1.

So your saying...

...you ran into a guy you used to do time with and he said nothing.  Well I am overfuckingwehlmed.

Tom?

Are you hearing anything on the trail about what the coaches are telling these kids about the future of our defense?  i.e. What they'll be running and who will be coaching it?

Sounds good...

...I mean its not like they are competing for a big ten title.  Or have beaten us 3 years in a row.  Or have the only 5 star player in the state for the last 2 years.  I mean those things are nothing to build on when going head to head with a recruit.  We're Michigan!!!  That's enough.

It is more than fair to say that I am leaping to conclusions...

...but State is getting better and we are not.  Frankly there was a time when a kid like Darian Cooper would never consider MSU.  If the Spartans can start to beat us on out of State kids head to head then we are in trouble as a program.  I don't like the precident.

If we lose Cooper to MSU...

...that is a bad, bad sign.  The one thing we still have left over lil' bro is the ability to recruit out of State.  If that goes away then the green and white will start to pass us as  a program.  I'd never thought that would happen.

What you thinking 20?

Is 20 the number for you?  If so its NIT, woo-hoo.  I don't think we can get to 20.

I agree...

9-9 in the Big ten gets them roughly to 15/16 wins depending.  9-9 would be tough, doable, but very tough.  That opening game against Purdue is huge.  They really need it.

Honestly with this sched I think 17 wins might get them in.

I lot of people at the Cleveland...

...engagement got the sense that he was leaning toward bringing RR back.  Did you get that same feeling?
