The qualification for international tournaments adds extra excitement/anxiety to the season. If your team is out of the race for the league championship, you're still anxiously watching to see if they finish top 4 and make Champions League, etc.
There's also relegation. The bottom few teams will be relegated to the lower league -- e.g., Serie A to Serie B. (Or you could be Juventus and be relegated for rigging matches.)
The best way to get into European soccer is choose a team, become a fan, and just go from there. Don't be a bandwagon Yankees fan though -- i.e., no Barcelona, Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester, Chelsea, et al.
