Roma v Barca Champions League

Submitted by garde on

One of the great comebacks in Champions League! Down 4-1 on aggregate, Roma blanks Barca 3-0 to advance to the semis. Any soccer fans who didn't see the match, try and find a replay tonight. You won't regret it.

Also, turning into a good year for my teams. Michigan in the NCAA Final, Roma in the CL Semi's first time since 83-84...Michigan football you are up next!

I can’t believe it. Almost as crazy as last year when Barca did this to PSG. Wouldn’t mind seeing Juve score early on Madrid tomorrow and make things somewhat interesting, although they (probably) won’t overcome all 3 goals.

I was visiting a friend in England when this game happened. We took the evening off from standard tourism stuff to watch the match. It was the first soccer match I'd ever watched in its entirety. Been a fan of Liverpool and soccer in general ever since. What an incredible night. YNWA.

For sure going to watch the replay tonight. With this win today Roma prevents Dortmund from getting 10 millions euros from Barca.

Well for starters, Di Francecsco went with a formation that Roma has barely played at all this season..3-4-1-2. I am sure Barca was not remotely expecting that because we almost always play a 4-3-3. Also, we fielded our most physical line up. Roma players were hammering Barca all match. And De Rossi pretty much shut down Messi.

I'm a Barca fan, so this was a tough pill to swallow, but kudos to A.S. Roma.  Huge win for a Serie A team that is tied for fourth with rival Lazio many many points behind Juve but still managed to knock off a superpower team.

Roma is one creative midfielder away from truly competing for the Scudetto. We play great against better teams who push forward and give us space. In Serie A, lesser teams will drop 11 behind the ball and we dont have the creative mid to unlock it. But agaist teams like Barca, Athletico, and Chelsea who wanted to play with us..and we held our own this CL.

Eh, I think we could compete for the student to with this 11, but we’re missing the depth of Juve and Napoli. If Dzeko isn’t in form, it’s tough for us to get goals. And we can’t afford to give Kolarov a day off for lack of fullback depth.

I'm a Liverpool fan. Great to sweep Man City and weird to be interested so deep into the UCL. Unfortunately I'm mentally preparing for another last 4 letdown like the two we experienced last week.

Also, the away goals rule initially sounded stupid when I learned about it but now I think it's one of the best rules in sports. When it's in play, games swing from winning to losing without being tied in between, that's dramatic and pretty cool. It can happen in basketball if teams are separated by a point and go back and forth, and sometimes football is similar. But there is still a chance of a tie that is erased when a trailing team has an away goal advantage

Each team plays in its own country’s league, akin to the B1G. They also play in their country’s domestic cup tournament (akin to B1G tournament in basketball). The top few (1-4, spending on the league) teams in each country’s league also play in the Champions League (akin to NCAA tourney). And the tier of teams in each country that do not play in the Champions League play in the Europa League (akin to NIT).

This is a really good explanation.

The qualification for international tournaments adds extra excitement/anxiety to the season. If your team is out of the race for the league championship, you're still anxiously watching to see if they finish top 4 and make Champions League, etc.

There's also relegation. The bottom few teams will be relegated to the lower league -- e.g., Serie A to Serie B. (Or you could be Juventus and be relegated for rigging matches.)

The best way to get into European soccer is choose a team, become a fan, and just go from there. Don't be a bandwagon Yankees fan though -- i.e., no Barcelona, Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester, Chelsea, et al.
