That, and Offense
starts at 0:57
All of that—professionalize it already. Missed opportunities on offense with a few dropped balls. Speight’s three turnovers were game-changers; fortunately Michigan forced a few on Ohio State. Some blown blitz pickups from 5th year seniors; story of this season is this offensive line wasn’t championship caliber. An ankle tackle away from a jet sweep TD. Peppers package runs out of steam.
Defense
starts at 23:52
Can’t ask more. Seen these Barrett games before, best game for the linebackers all year—edges shut down. Still getting to rotations slowly. Want them to get more aggressive in certain situations, more comfortable in Don Brown’s defense. If only they got Samuel down on that adventure. One award we are pretty sure Michigan will win this year.
Special Teams and Game Theory
starts at 36:57
Jourdan Lewis pitching to Peppers on the final kickoff woulda been the greatest play in history. Garrett Moores handled a laser snap perfectly. Jordan Glasgow is going to be a Glasgow, albeit a Kovacsian one. Running into the kicker should just not be a penalty. Cam Johnston is so weird. Urban was correct to go for it with such a great short yardage team, despite the result. Michigan should go to a fancy-dancy bowl game. Damn the bloody-minded nature of football.
Quick rundown of next year’s depth chart. Good season.

+1 for Jason Isbell. He's the best songwriter out there right now.

"Temptation" in the first commercial, followed by "Hawaiian War Chant" in the second commercial, almost felt like the Muppets that goddamn spot stole from us.

That final kick return from Lewis was excellent. If only Peppers had been looking around for a block instead of watching Lewis while waiting to celebrate. The guy that tackled Lewis was in a perfect position to be flattened by Peppers had Pep just stopped running. DAMMIT!!! LOOK AROUND TO HELP!!!!!

I thought the same thing- that was really a game changer play. Lewis had a ton of white shirts around him and a Buckeye just comes in unharmed and takes him out.
The reality is that this team had many chances to win and created a ton of mental mistakes. The problem in this situation is in special teams coaching. You just drill the heck out of people until they cannot forget to look around for tacklers.
What makes this team so frustrating is that some players try so hard and other players hardly try. I guess Peppers is onto the NFL so what does he care.

Not sure how many caught it, but on OSU's first FG attempt, the camera caught Gentry as the designated kick blocker up the middle. He jumped WAY up.
Pretty athletic looking for a 6'7"ish dude. Clearly the coaches saw significant evidence of that in practice or they don't put him in that role in that game.
Thought it was worth noting, given the discussion on his potential role next year in this podcast.

I'd totally forgotten about the Chesson sweep that was nearly a TD and then the Lewis return that was oh-so-pitchable

The loss stung.... it always sucks, even worse when its those shitheads or sparty, but there is no question Michigan football is back.
This game was 2015 vs sparty all over again. Dominate the entire game, fail to put them away and pay dearly. They did not play well enough to win, they played well enough to hang around, we (with an assist from the stripes) did the rest for them.
I heard a lot of: 'if we couldn't beat their freshman and sophomores with all our seniors, we'll never beat them'.... that's all bullshit!
In Harbaugh's 2nd season, we out played and have every chance to beat them. meyer fell on his face, knowing damn well he was the luckiest fucker alive when they scored the winning TD. In meyer's 5th season couldn't beat us without a fair amount of help. Jim only has 2 classes of his recruits and two of Brady's.... We were just two defensive stops away from 12-0.....
Offensive play calling seemed to leave a lot on the table. No fake jet sweeps, no bubble screen, Peppers hardly used as a decoy on offense, maybe only once and we never tried to stretch the field.
Michigan football is back, and the whole world knows it.

Lots of IFs but most obvious is IF the Refs had bothered to review the proper video it is clear he was short.
But I agree, with only 1 recruiting class Harbaugh did a great job.

The play went by too fast in real time to be sure, but I was thinking 3 things:
- Is there anyone to pitch the ball to? (figured risk of OSU returning a fumbled pitch the other way was minimal)
- Don't cut back inside, try to beat that last(?) guy to the edge
- If you are about to get tackled, try to put your facemask in a position where the tackle might grab it.
Did Peppers really stand/jog and watch? That would be very disappointing. Last year he cleared plenty of space for Chesson on his kickoff return against Northwestern.
There are a million reasons (all valid) explaining the final result. The one thing I haven't seen offered up is that OSU's explosive playmakers (Barrett and Samuel) made plays -- ours didn't. No idea if that's a talent gap, coaches failing to put our best playmakers in situations to make explosive plays (e.g., more jet sweeps), or something else.

No link, but I saw it clearly in real time - I was yelling at Peppers to look behind him. But he was merrily enjoying his view of Lewis' return, looking forward to the celebration. Three other white uni's were in front of Lewis when he slowed to cut inside, away from the last block. That's when the guy ran right by Peppers and took out Lewis from behind. Peppers should have had his goddamned head on a swivel in that situation!
Pisses me off more each time I think about it...

the cutback was a mistake, plain and simple. He should have stayed outside. He had that guy easily, and cutting back brought other tacklers into play. My belief is that Peppers was 100% sure Lewis was staying outside, because there was SO much space.
Another one of 10 things that by itself, wins the game.
FWIW, hear me - Not beating on Lewis. He made a superb play to get that play to where it was - I do think that the cutback was a mistake in the heat of battle.

Love the exiting comments from Ace regarding the street performer. At least the guy didnt throw out a "Fuck Michigan" between sets. That would have been the ultimate dong punch to top off the shitiest of days this year.

Elephant. That dang Isbell sure as hell can write a song. Never ceases to be beautifully devastating.
