This Year's Preview Rankings As Compared to Prior Years
As we continue to digest the wonderful preview content that Brian, Seth and the gang put out and get ready for Saturday, I couldn't help but notice the (ENTIRELY JUSTIFIED) amount of 4s and 5s that each position group has been rated.
That got me wondering, is there a database to see each year's ratings and/or a way to say that this season preview is the most optimistic since "X" year (ever)?

Damn buddy, I thought you're providing the content.

The search bar does a decent job of getting you what you desire. For example, I searched "2022 season preview" and came across the "Preview 2022: Wrap" page that lists every article that is a part of the season preview.

I'll let you compile the comparisons.

It would also be cool if we could interactively swap out historical players for current players and vice versa and have an algorithm that would predict the player-by-player impact on said ratings for any given year. That would be fun.

And people complain about OT season.

How this year's rankings compare to other teams in the Harbaugh era. 2017 will surprise you.

Use this one simple trick to get more 4s and 5s

Our jaw dropped when we saw what the 2018 rankings looked like now (SHOCKING).

Last year was basically all 4/5. Linebacker and Edge were 3/2. But they went 13-0. This year is even higher ratings but last year was pretty absurd. The bad years, I think they rated them pretty honestly but there’s always a homer bias. I take it to mean: probably as similarly good as last year. Herbert guarantees the strong 2nd halves for the inevitable close games in a league like B1G East. Should be fine. Wrap Johnson and JJ in bubbles.

But they went 13-0.
You missed one.

I did my best. Went back to 2016 because reasons. 2021 Doesn't have ratings that I can find, hence the x. There's also some positions that disappear at different points. I went with the ones that are being rated this year, so no Viper or FB. I know the format is wonky but it is what it is with what I have to work with.

I put this into excel and took some averages (both overall and to combine some positions that were analyzed differently in certain years) for comparison purposes. The overall average doesn't include special teams for all years since we don't have 2023 yet.

I stared at this for a minute. "How did 2019's QB rate a '5' and why didn't we get that? Oh... Shea Patterson. Riiiight."

2021 didn't feature any position-by-position previews as Brian had largely stepped away from blog duties to tend to his mental health and personal matters.

IMO, overall defense will be a bit better than last season but not as good as in 2021. Offense will be the best in Harbaugh's coaching stint here at Michigan. Special teams will be a downgrade from last season but hopefully near average. I worry in a close game a missed FG could cost us a game this season. My prediction is that we will lose only one game (at PSU on a missed last second 42 yard FG, 31-30). Close games will be OSU, MN and at NE. But I expect us to win the B1G and make the playoffs. We may reach the championship game against UGA.

On paper this is Harbaugh’s deepest and best team since 2016. The reason this team is so much higher is because QB RB and OLine are legit top 5 if not the top units in the nation. QB being the exception JJ has the ability to be right there with Caleb Williams.
