WTF Tigers Thread

Submitted by Maximinus Thrax on

Are the Tigers the only team that follows up a sweep of a team by getting swept by another?  I remember this happening last year as well.  Production at the plate is absolutely anemic, and the pitching staff gives up home runs about every other inning.  At least they don't let you get your hopes up for long.

No.

This is the first time it's ever happened.

Guys, people batting under .200 during the first month isn't absurdly uncommon. It is early.

Everyone chill.

What I'm most disappointed about is that this division isn't very good. Cleveland isn't as good as they're playing, they're going to come back to earth. Same with the Royals. And the White Sox and Twins are struggling. The Tigers should have built a big dvision lead during this month so they'd have some leeway during some struggles. Instead, they're playing .500 ball. Although that's about where I think our talent level is, it's just disappointing that we can't take advantage of a crappy division.

Ehh I disagree slightly. Cleveland and KC are very good young teams. I know because I am an Indians fan and have watched just about every game. Both teams have decent pitching, at least enough for now, but they both have great hitters. I will agree with you that Chicago and Minnesota are struggling. I think Chicago is a little overrated, they have the hitters but their pitching is suspect. Minnesota usually starts slow anyways. And yes Detroit is at .500, but it is still early, no reason to get too fired up already.

As a Sox fan I am much more concerned about the hitting than I am the pitching.  The bullpen issues were a lot of fluky, weird stuff (absurd HR/FB% rates for Thornton, Sale and Ohman, their best defensive players committing 9th inning errors to blow games, etc.) that won't last because I know Thornton and Sale can pitch, and I know the rotation is very good, even without Peavy.

But Beckham and Rios look totally lost, and they need those guys hitting for the offense to be good.  Q and Konerko are the only regulars hitting at all right now, the other seven regulars have all been crap.  Even Dunn has largely stunk, although the surgery offers an excuse in his case.

While I agree that both Cleveland and Kansas City have young talent, I think they're a year or two from actually contending over the course of an entire season. There's still over 130 games left and I think that alot of the young guys that are playing well will hit a wall and it'll depend on how they respond. I just think the veteran, experienced winning teams (Twins and Sox) will start playing better eventually.

Even read this yet but I have been on 3 tigers threads now saying we have tons of issues and everyone tells me to shut up. Well we have problems.

No.  But what the hell, we're three weeks into the season, and the Tigers are playing around .500 ball in a division where a few games over .500 will contend for a division crown. They are also ahead of the two teams other who are supposed to challenge for the division.

So, in short... shut up.

As the resident Mariners fan let me add a little perspective. The Tigers faced the M's top three pitchers. Felix is Felix. Bedard used to be a top pitcher and he still has a wicked curve. He just needed to get some starts under his belt. Pineda has as live an arm as anyone in the majors. By contrast the M's saw Coke who is Coke, Penny who has struggled this year and Verlander who made one mistake to Smoak. Speaking of Smoak the M's lineup is totally different when they have his bat which they didn't when they played the Tigers in Seattle earlier this year. These series are gonna happen. The pitching match ups were heavily slanted to the M's and their bats got hot. This series is not indicative of either of these teams true talent. That said the Tigers may need to worry about that bullpen a bit.

On the bright side, Al Alburquerque has been really solid out of the bullpen so far. He's been a good off-season pick-up, not sure why the Rockies let him go. It's still early in the season... everybody needs to chill.

I really enjoy watching the board freak out over the Tigers and every Leyland move that doesn't immediately work out. I'm willing to bet every team that made the playoffs last year was swept by some sub-500 team at some point last year. The Tigers might have issues, but they aren't in the AL East or West(or NL East...sigh) so if they can swing a deal for another bat and Jackson returns to form, they'll have a darn good shot at the division crown.
