Wish List for MGoBlog 4.0

Submitted by chatster on

Today, August 2, 2018, someone from Human Element has returned to commenting on this board, after having been silent since January 5, 2018. LINK  Welcome Back!

Because I’m among those who’ve been complaining at times about what I’ve called the Glitch Switch to MGoBlog 3.0, I’ll offer a Wish List for MGoBlog 4.0 if and when that’s ever launched:

  • Clear instructions about how to use the site (for example, describing ways to insert block quotes, images and gifs and embed videos in comments).
  • Making sure that clicking on the icons in the comment box for block quotes, inserted images and embedded videos will enable those functions to work properly.
  • Ability to edit posts, even after a post has been saved.
  • Clear identification/highlighting of NEW comments in a thread.
  • Ability to easily embed videos without using the <oembed> codes.
  • Easier way to insert images and gifs without having to first download them to a computer hard drive and then upload and select them into Imce File Manager.
  • Removing the large photos at the top of the home page that highlight stale stories.
  • Reducing the excessive empty space.
  • Ability to easily return to a post in a thread without having to scroll through the entire thread, or resolving the problem what Seth calls “erratic thread jumps”.
  • Ability to edit one’s account information.
  • Ability to see the complete history of one’s posts by clicking on one's name in the "Welcome" box.
  • IF points ever will be relevant again on MGoBlog, then:
    • Properly functioning points totals.
    • Clear indication to know whether you’ve previously voted on a post.
    • Showing totals for up-votes and down-votes of posts, instead of seeing only the net voting results.
    • Voting for original posts in a thread.
  • Ability to paste text in the comments box when using Chrome, without hitting CTRL + V.
  • IF the "Last Post" column is retained, then having an accurate timing in the column showing the last time a comment was made in a thread.
  • Adding lists of links to (a) Michigan-related websites and (b) websites for other schools in the Big Ten.
  • Adding an underlining button in the comments box.
  • Having a consistently reliable search function.
  • Having the comments box at the end of a thread, instead of at the beginning.
  • Ability to easily see another poster’s profile.
  • Updating the menu for “Useful Stuff” like the schedule, the depth chart listed by class, the unofficial two-deep, etc.
  • An improved, more attractive website banner.
  • No stories about Ann Arbor’s local politics.

You can actually solve your "No stories about Ann Arbor politics" issue by simply not clicking on the link.  Why does it bother you that much?  Why can't you just scroll past?  I do it all the time for hockey posts (sorry, just never really followed hockey that closely).

Personally, I'm glad Brian has made like three AA politics posts as it has gotten me more involved in (well, more interested in) local politics and that's a good thing.

Glad that you're interested in Ann Arbor politics, but those were NOT links.  They were front-page stories, and I did scroll past them without reading too much of them.

I appreciate that this is Brian Cook's blog and he's very much entitled to post anything he desires. I just think that those Ann Arbor politics stories add unnecessary clutter to an already overcrowded home page for what's supposed to be a blog that's primarily related to Michigan Wolverines athletics.  Would they have been less interesting for you if you'd found them in an off-topic message board thread?

It's good that Brian Cook is interested in Ann Arbor local politics.  I'm also very much interested in international, national, state and local politics and have been since I was listening to President Eisenhower's radio broadcasts in 1956.  I'm also interested in college hockey and college sports in general, and international football/soccer (sports-related topics that Brian occasionally writes about on the front page), but I've never lived in Ann Arbor and my only connection to the city of Ann Arbor (now one of my favorite communities in the country) is my having paid for one of my children to receive two degrees from one of the top universities in the world.

My list consists of an app, editing posts, and upvoting (I’ve seen some say that this is back but I haven’t figured it out). I don’t mind the look of the new site just harder for me without an app.
