FR. Tarik Black: 11 catches 149 yards 1 TD (3 games)

FR. Nico Collins: 3 Catches 27 yards 0 TD (4 games)

FR. Oliver Martin: Redshirt

Our offense really took a step back this year due to bad QB play and our young wide receivers didnt help the situation at all. Next year everyone will be 1 year older and we'll actually have some experience at the position.

Perry: Tailed off towards the end of the year, but will be back as our elder statesman slot man. Not sure why we didnt force feed him the ball more this season as he was the only guy who could consistenly get open. The offense should be opened up alot more next year so I expect to see more of the sophmore Grant Perry.

Peoples-Jones: Started theyear off slow because he was behind Black and Crawford but injuries to both of those guys had him as our only WR for 3-4 games. Saw lots of improvement in his route running as the season went on. Was the #1 WR in the country out of hs for a reason. We should see a big jump in year 2 as a returning starter.

Crawford: I may be a Crawford apologist but i think he can still be a solid receiver. He had some terrible luck this year (some his fault of course) but others are out of his control. Had 1 TD called back agianst Florida and another missed when he was wide open. Had another called back against MSU, and many other plays that were missed throught the season. His main problem is making contested catches. Hes got to start winning some of those 50/50 balls. Will at worst be the #3 outside guy next year as hes probaly the best blocker of the group. Will get his starting job back or be in the top 3.

Black: Had 2 solid games in the 3 that he played. We really could have used him during the season but it is what it is. Should be fully healthy by spring ball. Has some catching up to do expericence wise but is def one of the most talented guys in this group. If the injury doesnt linger he will be a special player to watch. Will be somewhere in that starting group of 3.

McDoom: The coaches need to be more creative in getting him the ball. He needs to have 2-3 touches every game, or at least send him on some deep routes. He'll never be a full time starter guy but as a specialist player he can be useful, just have to get him the ball in space. Maybe line him up in the backfield on 3rd downs and get him matched up with a LB or something. Will be the backup slot next year and gadget guy.

Collins: I wish he could have kept his redshirt but with how the season played out I see why he didnt. I thought he made some nice plays in the bowl game and showed off his athleticisim while high pointing the ball. Going to be in a tough spot next year as he's probably going to be #4 on the depth for outside receiver but hes too talented to not get on the field. Reserve wideout next year with possibly some red zone plays.

Schoenle: Made a few nice plays but was mostly used as a blocker. Don't see anything changing next year. Reserve WR.

Martin: Got his redshirt this year. With Perry and Mcdoom back he probably wont see too much time next year. Maybe about the amount of time that Nico got this year. But in 2019 as a redshirt sophmore the slot position should be his for the next 3 years.

Freshman WR: Any freshman that we bring in will unless something crazy happens get an automatic redshirt.

The future looks bright for our WR group. Add that in with the TE's that we have and whoever the QB is next year will have plenty of options to throw to.

I wonder why Oliver Martin red-shirted?  Was it for development purposes, or because they had enough WRs that it didn't make sense to burn the RS needlessly?

The impression I got from the recruiting posts on him was that Martin was one of those squirrely receiver dudes that just gets open.  I like squirrely receiver dudes that get open. We could have used that this year.

We had four true freshment receivers (after Brad went to D).

DPJ and Black were out of the gate going to play.  At that point, wasn't two true froshes enough?

Then Black went down, but before the medical RS limit, so basically now he red shirted and we brought in Collins.

Seems like a good plan.  Even with our lack of depth, freshmen receivers suck.  It seems like a measured approach

If we had a coach who knew how to coach these kids and understood down and distance.. who had more than 3 different routes to run.. Maybe we could get better QB play

I do think they will be much improved next year. Between the 4 frosh this year, at least 2 will improve dramtically and be close to dominant. Whatever the WR version of 2nd year Rashan Gary.

That being said, I disagree about Crawford and McDoom. Crawford is a good blocker and that's about it. Nothing else about him is impressive.

McDoom is just bad. He's tall Norfleet with no hands.

I'm less optimistic on McDoom but i'm willing to wait one more year before I call him trash. I really thing we couldhave used him better. Had all these creative plays for him in year 1, then in year 2 nothing.

Curtis Samuel ran jet sweeps for OSU all of the time. It is called integration of a young weapon. Last year, we had two seniors and an All American TE and Perry to get targets. McDoom getting in as a true freshman was simply a sign of his speed and athletic talent. He may not be a world beater WR, but he barely got any targets or plays for him. This hear’s offense hurt every Inglewood offensive player. There is no way they missed evaluations on so many guys in consecutive years.

Crawford reminds me of Edwards catch the tougher ones drop the easy ones McDoom is your jet sweep guy but Oliver is that postion type slot guy that will move the chains we will see him this next season maybe on punt returns, my level of confidence is real high o  Peoples- Jones on punt returns. Collins and Black are your deep threats and Jones will be better

I realize the focus in your post is the WR Group. I 100% agree that freshmen WR are rarely precise in route running. However, it is too simplistic to blame this on the WR and the QB. It is a combination of 3 major factors, and a 4th:

  1. WR route running, and ability to gain separation.
  2. QB ability to read the field, and check down all receivers.
  3. OL ability to provide pass protection for the QB (with help from FB, RB, TE.)
  4. Playcalling from OC. Contingent on skill of WR, QB, and OL, and experience level.

From my perspective, OL pass protection is very high on the list, and has been the achilles heel of the Michigan offense for some time. Perhaps the interior of the OL will be better next year. The question for me is whether we will see any OT candidates really step forward. I know we will have bodies:  will any of them be any good?

As regards 1, 2, and 3, imhe, you need to have at least two of the three above average to succeed. We were below average in all three areas. Combine this with a lack of experience, and you severely limit the playbook and playcalling. You also invite defenses to stack the line and crush the running game, daring the offense to prove they can stretch the field vertically.

I believe that our WR have the talent, and just needed the seasoning. With Patterson and Peters, and McCaffrey not far behind, the QB should also improve. I am HOPING, HOPING, HOPING, that we see a significant leap forward on the OL. But given the last 10 years, I have very little confidence here. However, if the OL improves to being at least mediocre, and the QB and WR to good, it could be huge. It isn't every year that you improve simultaneously at the OL, WR, and QB. Add to this that we have experience at TE, RB, and FB, and you now have a situation that is potentially better than it has been since Carr was here. Smh. It has been too long.

Most of these kids were used to running by slower DBs in high school or being covered by 5'9 defenders. In college they're finding out they are no longer the best athlete on the field and that the DBs covering them are more savvy and physical than high school. Plus, much like baseball players that I am frustated with who don't run to first base at full speed, I don't see wide receiver always going full blast on their pass routes. To me, every receiver should be going 100% on every pass play, even if they're the #3 or #4 option on the route.

Although this "effort" to run routes is not uncommon, it's interesting that the story on this site a few weeks ago said that Wisconsin players thought the difference between our players and OSU's is that Ohio State's don't take plays off.

Why is the offense going to be opened up more next year?  Seems like something everyone says following a shiity year offensively.  "Next year should be better in x ways" said every fan ever of a team that sucks.

To open up the offense more would be dependent on having more consistent QB play and better pass protection than we had this year.  That may happen, but it's a TBD.  We had three starters this year who threw the ball at the feet of receivers and over their heads.  We aren't opening up anything without that changing

My ideal lineup is a 3 wide with Black and Collins on the outside and DPJ in the slot. I think he can be an effective over the middle guy, wheel route, ect. He struggled vs corners this season, the separation wasn't there and I don't see him just magically being able to gain the speed quick slants/Ins require. Matched up against a safety or LB however I think he'd be great

If we have a passing game it will stop defenses from loading the box to stop our run game and we should be able to run the ball. Teams now don't respect our passing game and why should they

MeanJoe07

So basically if our offensive line gets incredibly better, all our recievers become better route runners and our quaterback play goes from horrendous to good next season we migth be a decent team.  Yay?

I think DPJ is overrated as a reciever.  He would probably a better fit as a safety where he can just be athletic.  I dont think he has the greatest hands, footwork, or natural instincts.  Black really seemed to track the ball well and moved like a reciever.  Looking forward to seeing him more next year IF his he can recover from the Injury.  With our luck it will limit him for the rest of his career.

I'll be excited to get Tarik Black back into the fold. As it currently stands, he's the only WR on the roster (outside of sophmore Grant Perry) who has flashed all-conference potential.

DPJ is athletic, but he still looks like a long-term project IMO. He could still turn into an all-American down the road, but he just looked lost out there most of the time, even at the end of season.

I like how they used Nico Collins in the bowl game - I'd love to see him develop as a tall physical possession/red zone/first down guy whose size and physically means he is essently always open even when covered.

Not sure how or why Grant Perry dissapeared this year. Seemed like Grant was Wilton Speight's favored receiver, but stopped getting targeted after Speight went down.

Crawford is just a guy.

The main thing to look forward to is that there is enough youth and raw talent on the roster that someone is likely to emerge.

MeanJoe07

I think all of our receiver aside from Black our projects or limited in skill.  McDoom is limited in size and tracking deep ball.  Crawford is a good blocker, but not a great athlete. Perry has great hands and a good route runner, but lacks size and straight line speed.  Nico is a big target, but lacks body control and route running. DPJ is very athletic, good speed once he's going, but is not quick twitch and needs to improve his hands and route running.

You can't do much with young wideouts besides run simple "hey run as fast as you can and beat some people deep" stuff. If Tom Landry walked out of his grave and coached the offense this year, it was still going to be hamstrung by youth.

That many young guys getting PT means you should reap rewards next year and the year after though.

Oliver martin will take over the slot job from Perry and Mcdoom, from what was reported through the year on him, I really see it happening. Kid was electric in the opening last year and since he has had a year to learn the system he will be prepared to go. I also see Tarik and DPJ getting a ton more receptions with more passing thats coming. Nico collins will probably be WR 3 or 4 but will get a significant amount of PT. Once this group gets a true WR coach and they learn more about techique and routes they should show why they were recruited so highly.

O line issues were huge this year.  Hard to see guys get open when you are running for your life at QB. A quality QB can also throw guys open.  When you've got DPJ, Collins and Black with size advantages over the corners you can throw those guys open and let them make plays.  It's easier to play zone against the Michigan offensive look as well and that takes chemistry and experience to learn to not only slide into the zone but also from the QB to make the anticipate the zone openings.  I think it will come with some time.

... McDoom keeps taking reverses ... on a handoff.

But wow, I as disappointed in Crawford this year.  You're right, he can't catch the ball, he just can't.  He does make occasional spectacular plays in between.  But he can't be on the field regularly if he keeps killing drives by dropping the ball

They need to get stronger and more physical. Plus, they need a bad ass, superb WR position coach who schools them and challenges them to make plays. They need a Coach Zordich.

Please Mr. Harbaugh send guidance to this talented, young group of WRs. Preferably in the form of a dedicated WR coach. Also....on another note, please consider going back to super huge shoulder pads for the RBs. Perhaps we can intimidate opposing defenses into averaging 7 yards per carry. Thank you.
