Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall punched player, hurled slurs at staff
So I knew something was up when they had six players transfer earlier this year. Now we know why.

Remember when people wanted him in Ann Arbor? Bullet dodged!

Either way, it kinda works.

Idk about you guys, but if my coach punches me and I’m as physically gifted as an NCAA D-1 basketball player while my coach is a middle aged guy well past his athletic prime, Im fighting back right there - especially in the heat of the moment.
Looked up Shaq Morris, the player who was hit. Oh yeah he could snap a man.
October 9th, 2020 at 6:24 AM ^
And then you'd need a lawyer to fight the expulsion, assault charges, loss of voting rights after conviction, etc. etc. etc.
October 9th, 2020 at 8:10 AM ^
That and it's not a life and death situation. You can walk away and let the authorities deal with the miscreant coach.
October 9th, 2020 at 8:23 AM ^
$20 Says they do nothing here.
October 9th, 2020 at 9:04 AM ^
You could do that. Or you could go all Latrell Sprewell on his ass.
October 9th, 2020 at 9:27 AM ^
I’m confused. Isn’t it self defense especially w witnesses

Black people don't have those luxuries. It's why a bunch of terrorists can storm a Capitol Building armed to the teeth and have the Senate Leader gab it up with them, but Philando Castile, who was a licensed gun carrier gets killed even after telling the cop he was licensed to carry and was carrying as he was obligated to do.
October 9th, 2020 at 12:49 PM ^
What?! Of course black people have those luxuries. WTH!
October 9th, 2020 at 6:54 PM ^
In theory, maybe. But philando's killer got away with murder. That suggests a double standard, does it not?
October 9th, 2020 at 10:23 PM ^
I still don't understand how the Casteel murderer got off. If you have a license to carry a concealed weapon, you have no criminal record. So why is it that this is the guy who you feel the need to approach with your guns drawn?
October 12th, 2020 at 4:44 PM ^
Sorry. Very late reply. The Philando Castile event was bad, no doubt - a complex situation. With that, those types of situations are EXTREMELY rare, that suggests really nothing at all in the grand scheme of things.
October 9th, 2020 at 8:56 AM ^
Nope. The coach will then say he feared for his life or something like that...
October 9th, 2020 at 9:11 AM ^
You've got to let cooler heads prevail in this situation. Would Marshall deserve it if he did fight back? Abso-friggin-lutely. Few would dispute that. But sometimes you've just got to be the bigger man and walk away, as hard as that is to do.
Especially if you're considering a future in the pros. I don't know if this kid is, but punching a coach back, regardless of the reason or circumstances, is not a good look when going in for an interview with a prospective team.
October 9th, 2020 at 10:27 AM ^
I agree completely. It takes a very level-headed adult to walk away from a situation like this and I respect the hell out of Shaq Morris for doing so. I just don't know if I would have exercised the same restraint - impulse control can be difficult, especially when someone throws a punch at you.
October 9th, 2020 at 12:48 PM ^
I'm sure part of it is exactly because this coach is not that physical imposing they don't feel in immediate danger, plus he is your coach, a guy you presumably like and trust. It's not unlike a parent or boss physically threatening you; it's a shock to your system and sometimes you don't immediately try to defend yourself.
October 9th, 2020 at 12:20 AM ^
This izzo stain on his reputation.
October 9th, 2020 at 12:28 AM ^
and he ain't necessarily even the worst person in his marriage
October 9th, 2020 at 12:52 AM ^
Is that wrong? Should he not have done that?
October 9th, 2020 at 2:14 AM ^
I tell you, he's gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to him at all when he first started there that that sort of thing is frowned upon...

I met him once in Wichita, he seem like a nice guy who was not stuck up. He actually approached me since I was wearing my Michigan hat. He said we had a great program and I complimented him on his Shocker program. So, I'm a bit surprised but some people can seem nice but really are not. Yeah, back during the coaching search, I thought he'd be a good fit here, thinking what he can do with Wichita State type talent. I'm now glad the search did not pick him.
October 9th, 2020 at 9:55 AM ^
This is one thing that people don't understand nowadays. You can't judge someone by what they say in passing, positive or negative. Some people are really good at disguising their true selves and others are just having a really bad day. Until you take the time to get to know someone you can't judge them positively or negatively.
Anyone can be a dick or a saint for brief moments.

There's an impressive list of allegations. If even some of it's true, he should be fired and never coach again. It's very disturbing that such sociopathic behavior by a coach would be tolerated for so long. He seems like a Bobby Knight on steroids.
October 9th, 2020 at 4:52 AM ^
I guess he can go work for Trump.
October 9th, 2020 at 5:10 AM ^
You had to do it, didn't you? You took a perfectly good post and politicized it.
October 9th, 2020 at 8:48 AM ^
What is the hand signal for this infraction?
October 9th, 2020 at 9:57 AM ^
I want my little girl to be just like her. lol
October 9th, 2020 at 11:55 AM ^
I think it is....
October 9th, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
You suck at life. WTH is the matter with you?
October 9th, 2020 at 5:25 AM ^
He will get fired and still be paid every cent remaining on his contract then almost immediately get a new job that earns him more. Top college coaches are untouchable financially thanks to good agents and pushover administrators.
October 9th, 2020 at 11:55 AM ^
Don't let fanbases off the hook that will forgive about anything for wins.
October 9th, 2020 at 6:04 AM ^
Yeah, but what did the players and assistant coaches do to deserve being punched? Article is a little light on those details.
October 9th, 2020 at 7:28 AM ^
Haha... ??
October 9th, 2020 at 9:13 AM ^
In HS, if we fucked up, coach would split us into threes and do suicide prints until someone puked. Those were the days.
2020 Me. I intended Suicide SPRINTs... like the phone, not the red or blue one, but the yellow one.. not the pink one either... remember when there was an orange one?
October 9th, 2020 at 9:56 AM ^
Those suicide prints were hell, but nothing is worse than the suicide oils.
October 9th, 2020 at 11:56 AM ^
I dunno, I'm partial to the suicide watercolors.
October 9th, 2020 at 10:23 AM ^
Agree. That player probably stole a candy bar when he was 9. These details are “conveniently” left out of this story.
October 9th, 2020 at 6:44 AM ^
Well, their mascot IS "The Shockers"
October 9th, 2020 at 8:06 AM ^
Obvious "The Shocker" reference* coming in 3... 2... 1...
*Disclaimer: Requires a filthy mind (like mine).
October 9th, 2020 at 9:57 AM ^
Their there. This is shocking I tell you, simply shocking.
October 9th, 2020 at 12:56 PM ^
thanks for pointing it out - their/there/they're - I know the difference but get sloppy.
October 9th, 2020 at 7:27 AM ^
More like Whitechita State amiright
Sorry ?
October 9th, 2020 at 8:08 AM ^
Shaming the player’s girth, talking about family and girlfriends, using racial language and impersonations.
Yep. All things I personally witnessed competing in varsity Big Ten athletics. never saw punching and choking but anything verbal definitely happens right in this conference. I, and 14 of my teammates, were called C***S***ers in one single post game speech. Many of us were told at various times that we should have been aborted. I always wondered how the pro-life guys on the team took being told their moms should have had abortions instead of giving birth to them.
so yeah all of that needs to exit college sports and while I played entirely in the 2000s I suspect it’s gotten better lately. Just know that it definitely happens all across our conference in many sports.
October 9th, 2020 at 8:37 AM ^
Why should only the pro-lifers be upset about being told they should've been aborted? That's a fairly horrible thing to say - and I spent 6 years on a submarine finding ways to one-up the slams that came my way! It's one thing to say it when you're joking your way through a 4-month run underwater, it's a completely different thing to shout out when you're angrily screaming at a bunch of kids for screwing up a game.
October 9th, 2020 at 9:11 AM ^
so do you really think nuclear submarine warfare is more important than college basketball!?
i just don't even know where to start on that....
