Why do our players continue to make guarantees?
really don't get it. Every year it really is like what happened last year is completely forgotten and this year is THE YEAR. The latest comes from Jourdan Lewis who said:
I expect them to win it all man,” Lewis said. “They’re up there once again and have all the tools they need, and the guys have been through it all. Coach Harbaugh has everything in place again — a great offense, an outstanding defense and a good quarterback (in Shea Patterson) who understands how to win games. We came so close last year but just need to clean a few things up.” "We’re definitely going to take down Ohio State. It’s that or bust. Little Brother can speak all they want, we’ll get the job done no matter what.”
I absolutely loved watching Jourdan play, but being completely objective last year's team was nowhere close to a national title, and lost arguably one of the worst games in the history of the rivalry, and now it's "I expect them to win a national title"? We've lost 14 out of 15 to them and have no big ten titles in 15 years. I don't know, stuff like this just makes me wonder how it's the same talk every year but no results come November.
Because they're cocky young kids. Need any more obvious questions answered?
Problem is we never hear anything like this from OSU who has the same players the same age. We did used to hear it from them back when they were losing every year. Guys like Terry Glenn and David Boston.
I think you answered your own question. When you're winning all the time, there's no reason to guarantee anything.
Winning cures all.
When you win as often as they have over the last 15 years, there is not much to say, they expect to win and don't need to talk to convince themselves and their fanbase.
How does what Jourdan said convince any of the fanbase of anything? How did what Higdon said do that either? The ass whopping they took certainly convinced me they weren't at all prepared like they said they were. And then Chase called it "a mirage".
Have you ever played a sport? People say shit to psych themselves up, and to support teammates.
It's really not that mysterious.
Is this even true? I don't obsess over all the content that comes from rival schools so I don't even know if this is factually correct.
Too be fair, those players had a right to be cocky because they were damn good. John Cooper was a lousy coach and one of the best things to ever happen to the Maize and Blue.
Guarantees are dumb though. They just motivate the other team and set you up for failure.
Eventually they have to be correct. I mean after 15 years it is getting to be a safer and safer bet.
We've been getting a lot of dumps in boxes for a long time
Hey, kind of like this post! Good work champ!
Okay.
did you see the one where our 2021 5 star QB commit made those comments about how OSU used him and lied to him and that he wants to go to Michigan to kill OSU?
We talk shit that is what we do. Just need for one of these classes to finally back up something that isn't a dumpster
Sounds similar to Kyle Kalis and blood on the nonsense.
The worst ever was Brady Hoke's last couple of recruiting classes would all "bond together" on twitter by pumping themselves up how great they're going to be. Thankfully it hasn't been nearly as bad on twitter as it used to be with incoming recruits.
So you'd rather he say "they have no chance. The program should be folded." They are competitors and should be making statements like this regardless of whether the team does well or not.
Nobody is required to put their foot in their mouth. Nobody has to say anything.
DO MORE. SAY LESS.
No, I'd rather they say something like "I think we're going to have a good team this year which has a good shot at winning the big ten. We always want to beat OSU also". Not talk in absolutes and guarantees like the past doesn't matter.
Not gonna dog on your opinion, OP, but this is a former player who's been out of the program for a couple years giving his opinion about what he expects. I don't think this amounts to "bulletin board material" - "hey some dude who used to play for them said they're gonna beat us....RAWRRR" doesnt really seem to be the stuff of OSU's locker room wall.
Guarantee it, don't, I don't really care. Just win the damn game for once.
Eh, they really shouldn't. Whether they're winning or losing, words are just words. It's the opposite of "they do the talkin, I do the walkin."
Because you touch yourself at night, OP
Serious question...does it matter? They will either beat us again or won't. Talking crap may help motivate a little but OSU will be motivated no matter what.
Devin Bush's actions at MSU last year should have fired up MSU and Dantonio so much (errrr 94 yards). Talk is cheap but it makes the games/rivalries fun and adds to them. Why do we have to do this routine where we can't enjoy college sports until we "prove it on the field first"? If that is the case, Alabama and Clemson should be the only fans enjoying college football.
I'm with you on this. It cracks me up when people complain about fans guarantee wins. The only thing that matters is the product on the field, and the coaching decisions made that day. Although, you are probably more right than you realize it,saying that Alabama and Clemson are the only one's really enjoying college football at the end of the day.
Why do we have to do this routine where we can't enjoy college sports until we "prove it on the field first"?
This times a googolplex. People literally get bent way the fuck outta shape over recruiting classes, coaching changes, B1G titles, winning, etc.
It's just a game folks. If you're letting a loss or an 18 year old recruit deciding to play somewhere else fuck up your day that badly, you seriously need to re-prioritize your life.
Words don't do it for me, let your performance on the field do the talking for you.
There will always be smack talk in football, I just don't think there is a place for it when you're 1-14 against your chief rival. That being said, I have less of a gripe with Jourdan saying something vs a current player doing it.
How do you want him to talk about the team? These are players and coaches he played with. His goal will always be encouragement and pushing them to do their best. He mentions goals that are always the main goals.
If your goal is not to go undefeated and win the championship, my guess is you've never played competitive sports. Pipe dream or not, you always play to win the game, and if you keep winning games, you're playing to win it all.
Does this really bother you that much?
1. He said "expect." Why the fuck do you care so much about what he expects?
2. Do you think this gives OSU some added bonus motivation during the game? An alum saying that his alma mater is going to beat their rival who they haven't beaten?
3. It's a rivalry game.
This is such a "who cares" type of thing and you created an entire thread about it. I guarantee this thread sucks.
He also said "definitely". How preposterous of him!
The better question is, why do you care?
Because it amplifies the embarrassment. See: Lou Holtz
He’s not guaranteeing anything though. He has high expectations for Michigan. So do we all.
I don't know what you expect him to say. Something negative, because that's how you feel? Are you really expecting complete objectivity from people that aren't objective? They're rooting for Michigan. I prefer this. He's a former player. He can say what he wants. It's not quite the same as a current player doing it.
How much do you want to bet former players from lots of schools are saying something similar? You just don't pay attention to them.
Saying he expects them to win it all is far from a guarantee, what’s he supposed to say I expect them to go 9-3? Get real OP you’re teaching.
...reaching, too.
Breaching, too.
Good catch, but maybe he’s a teacher too?
What are they supposed to do? Say, "Yeah, nothing I did meant anything and the team I played for and have friends on doesn't get to talk about anything until they get this gorilla off their back."
Both the braggadocio and the "Do more, say less" crowd are boring and are fairly meaningless. What Lewis says won't gain a yard or score a point in November, so what do you care? It's not like what's causing this horrible streak is bulletin board material.
I guaranteed it will happen again.
Michigan should win the Big Ten next year barring an injury-plagued season.
They have the first or second most talented team in the conference, an experienced offense full of stars, a top-5 in the country HC, top-5 in the country DC, a new OC whose entire motivation is to transform the offense into something that matches the talent and they have the most difficult game on the schedule at home.
Does this mean they will? No. But it shouldn't surprise anyone if they do as they have all the tools in place.
I like it. I get bored of athletes giving the stock "we respect our competition" speeches.
So, so, so, soooooo happy we can downvote OPs now.
because its fun
OP is the kind of person who only talks trash AFTER the game is won. Those guys are easily the worst.
Good post. Is this your first college offseason?
Because they expect to win a National Title. Who cares? The alternative is them not believing in themselves.
Quit whining ya big baby.
Why do you care so much is a better question.
I really don't care what a former player says, but this defense is going to regress this year fairly significantly IMO. Hope I'm wrong.
