White pants for road games permanently: your thoughts?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I'm a big fan of the white pants on the road.

And Harbaugh said today that they're gonna be permanent, as opposed to a one year deal which it was supposed to be.

Harbaugh says the white pants on the road will be a permanent thing. He's a fan of that.

So this is a postmortem for the Maize pants on the road, if you will.

Aside from that small block of the mid-70s and last year, we have worn Maize pants on the road literally since Maize pants were first introduced to the uniform back in the 1930s.

I've gotten so used to the white pants that it almost feels weird when I see Maize pants on white jerseys from practice shirts. It also probably gives me a more favorable view since we went undefeated in B1G road games last year for the first time since 1997.

Not to mention winning a bowl game by 34 against an SEC division winner in their own state.

Are you happy about the white pants staying? Will you miss the Maize pants?

Not crazy about white pants.  Maize pants just look better.  Football uniforms very rarely look good in monochrome.  The saving grace is, it's a well-executed look, but it's just not the historical look.

I'll miss them. But used to it so not a huge deal. Definitely some good away moments with the maize pants and a more distinctive look...

They are superior. In five years we will probably revert to them. But it will take us that long to effect a course correction. Lobby, yet be patient.  The paramount objective is to win the Michigan Way, all else is secondary.

This is how a Michigan football player should look as vistors, epitome

Well, except for that kneepad. And those socks ... what is down with those socks?

Black shoes completely clash with the overall scheme.  Unless I suppose they are untied.

Damn this fashion business.

im sorry but im confused. so many people keep talking like we got rid of the maize pants. and then you say maybe we will go back to them in 5 years. they wear them for every home game! i dont think it would be super difficult to pack the maize pants for a road game and put them on before you left the locker room.

Eh, if the next five years go as well as we hope, there probably won't be too much of an outcry about the uniforms.

I think we'll see the maize ones return now and then as an alternate, but probably not as the primary road pant under Harbaugh.

Really I would prefer if we would go all white for a few big games a year then roll with the maize for the rest of the away games. Don't mind the all white but I also really enjoy the maize pants.

Let's just keep the khakis on the sidelines please!

I can live with the white pants (as long as the side stripes remain), but I love the look of the maize pants.  It would be great to roll them out for rivalry road games!

I like the white pants because it makes for a better blend of maize and blue. It's more balanced and puts a greater emphasis on the design of the helmet.

It helps that the accents are really clean, too.

I mean these pants are just gorgeous. Simple and timeless. It's clean but without the "underpants" look that Texas fans gripe about.

The Texas road uni is sweet.  But it and Penn State's road uni only work because the helmet is white.  It does not look as good with a dark helmet.

That's why if we are going to wear all-whites, I'd like to see the maize and blue stripes on the pants and jersey be a little bit thicker to match better with the maize and blue helmet.

I'll be honest I hated HATED the road unis at first glance last year. After watching an entire season in them, I began to like them a lot and they now symbolize the ever-exciting Harbaugh era.

I also think last years away uniforms look better than the new ones. I think the numbering on the side of the shoulders look better than on top.  Apparantly I'm in the minority but I really don't like what Nike came up with.

The maize pants were a nice contrast to the white jersey and the helmet really set it off.  There are some things from the Lloyd Carr era that I do miss. (Including the NC)

We're the maize and blue. I'd like to see those colors in our uniforms on the road. All white is fine I guess, but it's so generic. So many teams have that. I love the color maize, it's who we are, so I'd like if we can have pants be maize I vote for that.

If for nothing else, the blue pants would provide some variations. We know we don't want to be Oregon, but switching it up every once in a while is ok as well. I'd rather see and all navy attire for a night game, instead of some of the alternate jerseys they rolled out with adidas. Just switching up pants would provide the variation some want, while keeping a classic look as well.

Rankism is the phenomenon in which a person's expertise in one area (say, in acting) wins them unwarranted deference and status in another (e.g., politics).  Tom Brady may be the GOAT QB, but personally I find his alleged friendship with Mr. Trump a bit disconcerting.  Coach Harbaugh may be the GOAT of Michigan and college football coaching, but that merely gives him influence--not authority--over sartorial decisions with regard to uniforms.  All fashion in the 70s sucked, and that includes our road uniforms.  I saw them up close, and the team might as well have worn all dishwater gray.  Bring back the maize pants, and get the maize right while you're at it--it's the color of ripe sweet corn, not the orange/gold of feed corn.

Yeah, national championships are nice, but personally I prefer tradition over championships.  Tradition, whether its ours or Notre Dame's or anybody else's begins with not compromising the values of distinctiveness and recognizability.

And remember this, Jimophiles:  No man is bigger than the team.  Not Bennie or Fritz or Bo or Jim.  The University.  The Tradition.  The Team.  Then the man.  In that order.

As long as they keep winning on road. I went to Maryland, Penn state, Indiana, and the Bowl Game in Florida last year . They won every time. The 4 wins are about the total wins on the road that I saw in the previous 7 years. They had 1 quality road win in all those years. 2010 at Notre Dame. It must be the white uniforms.

Really like the Maize pants. But there was something last year with the white pants when i flipped on the TV against Utah. Fell in love with them and couldn't be happier that they are back for the time being.

Not a huge fan, but the team has an .833 winning percentage under Harbaugh, including a couple heart-pounding, come-from-behind victories, in the all white.  If it ain't broke...

Maize pants was a tradition for U of M football. Bob Ufer used to describe the uniform for an away game something like this "Michigan is wearing white jerseys with blue numbers and the traditional maize pants". For only two years in the 70's did Michigan break from that tradition. Only a few games were on tv then, so you didn't see the white pants often. When Michigan was on tv in their road uniforms, I thought they looked very ordinary. It didn't look right then, and it doesn't look right now. If you are someone who wants all the different color combos and chrome helmets, then go to Oregon and get off my lawn.

That is my point.  You'd have to find out when Ufer began refering to the pants as "Traditional Maize Pants".  Was it before we wore white pants, or after we wore white pants?
