Where Do YOU Stand On... (your personal rating of Harbaugh, Howard, Manuel, etc.)

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on January 13th, 2023 at 8:46 AM

This seems like a terrible idea, but I'm going to try it anyway.

You can consider this sort of like "confidence ratings."

1-5 scale.

  • 1 = 0% confidence. Fire now.
  • 2 = Down on (this person). Not looking good, would gladly upgrade (provide names who would be an upgrade if you can).
  • 3 = Indifferent. There are positives, there are negatives.
  • 4 = Plenty of confidence in this person, glad they are a WOLVERINE!
  • 5 = 2005/2015 Carol Hutchins, 2017 John Beilein, or Dec. 28, 2014 Jim Hackett levels of confidence and job security.

...use decimals if you want...

Where do YOU stand on...

  1. Jim Harbaugh
  2. Juwan Howard
  3. Kim Barnes Airco
  4. Brandon Naurato
  5. Tracy Smith
  6. Warde Manuel
  7. Santa Ono
  8. Kevin Warren
  9. The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together)
  10. "The Current State of College Football"

With my total knowledge of the athletic department's inner workings I vote - dear football, please hurry back, it's going to be a long off-season.

Uh sorry, way too many things to think about this early in the day. I'll check back in later after I've gotten the morning's gottadoems completed. Maybe.

Warde Manuel has been underwhelming.

Harbaugh has been pretty overrated, bit of a control freak on offense, but I applaud him for turning around what can only be viewed as a complete disaster in 2020.  He made some bold moves, moves that risked his career.  But Either go to the NFL or don't.  The attention whore in him is getting annoying.

CF is not fun anymore, it has been ruined, and the players still aren't getting any money from the universities they play for.

I had a conversation a few weeks ago with someone who is very much in a "position to know."

She told me that, while she isn't a big Warde fan, Harbaugh's flirtation with the NFL has nothing to do with what Warde has or hasn't done. It also has nothing to do with money.

Harbaugh is just that desperate to win the Super Bowl, especially since his brother has done so.  If he gets an NFL offer, he's gone.

The reality is that Harbaugh is one of the only - of not THE only - college football coaches that is at least somewhat desirable to NFL teams.  That's why Michigan is the only school having this issue;  not because of something Warde said or did.

I think it's also ridiculous to blame Warde for Beilein, Hutch, and Bakich.  They all left for their own unique reasons.  Beilein was clearly tired of college basketball.  Hutch was 65+ and had coached for almost 40 years.  Bakich went to a much better situation to try and compete for a championship on a regular basis.  The coincidental timing is not necessarily evidence of causation.

The Pearson situation was clearly bungled.

It's too early to make a determination on Juwan.  Let's not forget how Harbaugh's tenure looked just two years ago.

As opposed to a conversation with someone whose reading comprehension sucks...like you?

Re-read the second sentence, where I indicate this person isn't a fan of Warde.  In fact, she described him as being somewhat lazy and ineffectual.

But you do you and roll with whatever narrative you'd like to believe.

JFC, you get really angry really quick.  Feel sorry for you, going through life so angry can't be fun...

You said "isn't a big fan" - which is pretty open.  Also "in a position to know" is pretty open - friend of a spouse/relative, works with/for, work/social acquaintance???  So many possibilities!!!  I'll stand by what I said - sounds like Warde's side of the story.  The exact relation to Warde is irrelevant.

I hope you can calm down and enjoy the weekend...

5 for Coach Harbaugh.  Too soon after a most brutal loss at Iowa in a game Michigan had until the final seconds of regulation for me to fairly assess my own thoughts about Coach Howard.  Don't know much about the other administrators except not impressed with Kevin Warren, or his sanction on the tunnel incident, and I hope he goes to the Bears, 4. for our coordinators who are likely to continue to get better, Love college football but rate a 3 in current state, over commercialed and inconsistent and somewhat incompetent administration by NCAA.

Anyone giving Juwan a low score, or thinking the team lacks fight, must not be watching the games. The players (other than Dickinson) are improving and giving better effort seemingly every game as they get more comfortable. Playing two bigs against Iowa was an excellent coaching adjustment and really seemed to negatively impact Murray, at least for a while. Once Reed figures out how to catch a pass he could be a weapon (his fumbles last night were the difference in that game). Many a Beilein team went to East Lansing and Iowa City and got blown out, don't forget that.

This team has only had one true no-show (against Arizona State) and with more experience would have definitely won at least the Virginia and Iowa games. Our entire roster could return next year! The Big Ten is almost always a league won by old teams with lots of experience each and every year as there are never enough true stud young players/lottery types to make a huge difference like it does in other conferences (ACC and SEC come to mind specifically). If you doubt this just look at what Rutgers is doing this year. They have experience everywhere and it shows.

Juwann rating as for me has nothing to do with one single game.... The roster management especially the PG spot has been sub par. The late game coaching has been sub par. Up two possessions and you don't hedge a ball screen or hand off late in the game is disorganization. You know exactly what your ball screen coverage is in that situation its always hard hedge give up a two and foul no one. Last possession and biggest of game we go to option 5 on the floor in Dug. Dickinson never touched the ball in 4 possessions where one basket probably seals the deal. I get it Juwann didn't foul the guy and I'm sure he knows all of these things but it clearly isn't getting through to the team and put from practice or the board to the floor. That falls on coaching IMO. Something is a miss here with this squad. Dickinson looks completely disinterested at times, the mental lapses are maddening like stepping out of bounds, yes he was pushed but don't put yourself in that position. This team has pieces. Tell me the last freshmen to look like Jett Howard? Kid is real deal. Reed looks like a player, Bufkin is blossoming and yet zero results to this point in season. Last night could have be a spring board instead found another way to lose a game you probably should have won on the road! I can not invest in this team for some reason and I coached varsity hoops for 15 seasons in Michigan. Basketball is my love...

1. He was always the best man for the job, even in 2020. No one out there is an upgrade that I can think of.

2. Probably one more sideline blow up from getting shit canned

6. Didn't really have any issues with him until he apparently lowballed Jim after this year. Don't get in Jim's way or else it's your job. Everything else is fine IMO although a large faction doesn't feel that way.

7. I like the athletics friendly vibe. The committee/focus on building names is a virtue signal and a waste of time.

8. He completely botched the COVID season and folded it too early at the end of the summer. I never forgave him for that. Keep the bears at soldier field because a weekend in downtown Chicago for an NFL game kicks ass.

9. B+ for everybody. Stability at HC will go a long way.

10. Preserve the spirit of what NIL was meant to accomplish:give players the ability to make their own damn money through social media, autographs, merch, appearances, etc. Collectives should have the tightest leash possible around their necks. Death to Megaconferences and any excessive influence from TV execs.

Harbaugh is unpredictable so I think that situation is mostly out of Warde’s control.

But hiring Juwan, an nba assistant with zero head or college coaching experience was a terrible choice.  Keeping him when after he was the only head coach in the history of college to slap an opposing coach was even dumber.

1) Jim Harbaugh - 4.5 (The inability utilize QB runs and passing concepts effectively and consistently holds him back)

2) Juwan Howard - 3 (The PG position is killing him, give it another year to resolve that BS and find a real, live 3.  Needs to shake up his assistants...)

3) Kim Barnes Airco - 4 (UM WBB has been a nothing burger for generations, and now its relevant and competitive on a national level.)

4) Brandon Naurato - 4 (For a young interim, this team looks every bit as good as Mel's team did, and his recruiting looks to be top notch.)

5) Tracy Smith - ???  (Who the hell is Tracy Smith?  This the baseball replacement for Bakich?  No clue...)

6) Warde Manuel - 2 (Bruh...  Dude has run the AD like a well oiled machine, very good at administrating it.  But absolutely horrible whenever he needs to show a backbone.  Sometimes, even institutional forces like Jim Harbaugh need the full weight and support of an institution like the Michigan Ath Dept, and Warde declines to provide it.  He has repeatedly got in Harbaugh's way and hindered his ability to put/keep Michigan at the top.  He also let Juwan take the full blame for the UW fiasco.  A good leader doesn't do that.)

7) Santa Ono - Probably 5, but incomplete.  (Lets see how he resolves the impasse between football and the AD.)

8) Kevin Warren - 3 (Appears almost as anti-UM as Dilbert's Boss appeared, but did grab USC and UCLA.  Bolting town for a demotion.)

9) The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together) - 4 (Held back by the lack of anyone on the staff that can spell 'pass'.)

10) "The Current State of College Football" - 3 (The game itself is still better than anything but playoff/Olympic hockey.  The politics continue to be worse than actual politics.)

Where do YOU stand on...

  1. Jim Harbaugh - 4, would have been 5 before the NFL flirtation.    Was 3 before seeing the NFL flirtation is probably at least in part due to burger bullshit and Manuel mismanagement
  2. Juwan Howard - 3, trending downwards.   He owns the roster construction issues.
  3. Kim Barnes Airco - 5 - if Warde fucks this one up……
  4. Brandon Naurato - 4, but still early to know for sure.   Walked into great roster which certainly makes his job easier, but fir a guy who also got the job late, has limited head coaching experience and has tge Pearson pieces to deal with seems to be doing well.   Important to see how rest of season goes, but could be a solid coach for a long time.
  5. Tracy Smith - don’t follow baseball well enough to have an informed opinion
  6. Warde Manuel - 2.  Would have been 3.5 before Pearson and Ono having to step in on Harbaugh situation
  7. Santa Ono - 5 - he stepped in on Harbaugh, if Harbaugh stays, Ono deserves the credit.
  8. Kevin Warren - 3, indifferent because I am not a Bears fan.   2 as it applies to Big Ten Commissioner
  9. The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together) -4.   Would have been 5 prior to TCU.   Still hopeful there is room for growth
  10. "The Current State of College Football" -  3 - we need some consistent, enforcable NIL rules.   But I still love watching and rooting for Michigan football.

Harbaugh-5 It's not 1985 when there were 5 teams on national television each week. It's much tougher to recruit and win at M in the current college landscape then most people realize. The M recruits itself narrative is bs.

Howard-3 Not trending well but not throwing in the towel yet either. Replacing Beilein was most likely going to be a step down similar to the guy that follows Harbaugh. Shiny new things people should learn from this but they will not.

Warde- Incomplete as I don't believe every rumor I read and will see how this all plays out before passing judgment. Too much bs floating around at the moment.

Weiss/Moore etc.- 5 I like going to the playoffs and the second half adjustments were on point all season. These guys are all young and would love to keep the band together.

Current state of CFB- 1 It's the wild west. Complete clown show. A lot of fools being separated from their money. Shutting down the satellite camp idea was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. That actually benefitted everyone and was a great idea for teams to make in roads in the South while providing quality coaching to young athletes that otherwise may never have gotten that opportunity.

  1. Jim Harbaugh - 4. No doubt he's done a good job on the field but the annual dance with the NFL is annoying at best.
  2. Juwan Howard - 3. I don't mind bitch-slappin' a fool regardless of how it looks to those being slapped. Team performance and recruiting the guard position is uneven as well as game management.
  3. Kim Barnes Airco - N/A. Team is doing well from what I can tell, but I don't follow them close enough to rate her performance.
  4. Brandon Naurato - Not enough data. He was put in this situation by the Pearson fiasco, let's give him time to give us something to celebrate (or whine about).
  5. Tracy Smith - Not enough data;  let's give him time to give us something to celebrate (or whine about).
  6. Warde Manuel - 2. I understand leadership is hard, but that's what you get paid for. NCAA sports are a mess right now, so I have empathy, but cumong mang! Get out ahead of this instead of sitting in your office like a grown up Butters saying "Aw hamburgers" and staying mum.
  7. Santa Ono - 4. Love his start. Let's see how the Harbaugh and NCAA stuff play out. He could be a 5.
  8. Kevin Warren - N/A. Da Bears play NCAA-level football although they are in the NFL, so perhaps hiring an NCAA guy is a sage move for Da Bears.
  9. The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together) - 4.5. Only knock is on whoever decided not to run JJ more in the Fiesta Bowl and to go away from what got us there on D. We could have/ should have thumped TCU straight up with out the cuteness.
  10. "The Current State of College Football" - 1.5. You're losing me, CFB. Too much monetization and advertising, unclear rules, piss-poor officiating with bias built in, etc. If you're fussing over hamburgers and cream cheese... 20 minutes of stretching, etc., while the FBI is investigating other schools and even more schools are making sham majors, and you're doing nothing about that, you have a problem.

You of all people should've known I was being wildly sarcastic...sheesh.

BTW, I 100% agree with your comments below regarding what Warde should've done once the NCAA announced their bullshit cheeseburger investigation.

Lastly - did anyone else notice the timing of their announcement?  How convenient it was made public the Friday before the National Championship game we were, by all rights, suppose to be playing in.  Now that would've have been a distraction at all would it?  We were targeted, if Warde had a pair he'd have called that out too.

I get that you don't think WM is the man for the job, but I think you're completely off base here.

The only thing a responsible, successful AD does in public with this kind of thing is release a statement that says "We are aware of the allegation and will cooperate fully with the investigation".  Regardless of how satisfying it would be to have the AD say "I wiped my ass with the allegation because BS belong in the crapper", that would be a dumb move.

In public you cooperate.  Privately, after you're done rolling your eyes, you talk to whoever you need to, and when you discover and document that there is, in fact, nothing to it, you tell the coaching staff that there's nothing to it, you have their back, and let you take care of it.

Which, AFAICT, is exactly what our AD is doing.  He's not turning a zero-day story into a ten day story about the outlaw culture at Michigan causing our coach to leave in disgrace.

4.  3.5

5. ?

6. 3

7. 3.5

8. 3 - isn't he leaving so doesn't really matter

9. 3.9 Would like to see them settle on 1 play caller only reason not a 4 or above

10. 3 Interested to see if 12 team playoff helps parity at all. I still feel final 4 would be 4 of the top 6 most years so not sure. Would love to see home games for all but championship, and championship true rotation through main geographical areas. Then move Bowl games back to what they were. I just feel this would give a larger advantage to being 1-4 than just a bye game.

  1. Jim Harbaugh (5 - has achieved virtually every goal he could here, wish he didn't create distractions for the team with the NFL stuff but he has earned the right to. Best coach this program could actually have right now despite it all. Not a single one of his detractors would rather have Mel Tucker or Ryan Day or Frames Janklin)
  2. Juwan Howard (3.5 - performance of the team the past 1.5 seasons is concerning, but winning a B1G title, 1 seed, big NCAA upsets etc. are not an accident. Realistic conversations about his job probably won't come into play until after the 23-24 season)
  3. Kim Barnes Arico (5 - she has the UM WBB program at as a high a level as can be expected and actually beyond what I thought possible. WCBB is the ultimate blue blood sport, and the only team that's newly broken into that realm this century is South Carolina. I think KBA has some 5*'s committed, let's see if they propel us to take that next step...)
  4. Brandon Naurato (4? Team seems up and down but he appears to be a good recruiter and in a coinflip sport like NCAA hockey that puts UM in a position to compete for national titles)
  5. Tracy Smith (3/incomplete - he's in a tough spot but so was Bakich when he arrived, let's see how it goes)
  6. Warde Manuel (2.5 - it's really hard to tell which narratives out there are accurate and which are being pushed by those with agendas. He's made some good hiring decisions but would like to see him as more of an advocate for his people. Athl. dept. has had a lot of on-field success overall since he's been here)
  7. Santa Ono (5 - very early, but he seems to "get it" so far)
  8. Kevin Warren (3.5 - won't be remembered as a great commissioner but he was brought in to make the conference and it's schools money, and he sure did via the new media deals)
  9. The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together) (4.5 - the results are out there on the field for everyone to see. Developing players and a team that win. Slight ding for a couple of uncharacteristic performances in big games, countered by overperforming against OSU)
  10. "The Current State of College Football" (IDK what this means, but 3.14159? The game is messier now with the portal and NIL, I still love it like I have for years)
