What was your favorite memory of The Game?

Submitted by Hello_Heisman on

We're all in a shitty mood about the 2013 team and the very low likelihood of victory on Saturday.  I get it.  So in the hopes of generating some kind of positive conversation, I thought we could at least talk about some of the good times in this rivalry.  It's not going to change Saturday's outcome, but it's sure more fun to talk about than Al Borges's gameplans.

My favorite memory was the 1997 game.  Senior year, huge season after 3 straight years of mediocrity and another in a line of great OSU teams from the mid-late 90's waiting in the final game of the season.  Besides the obvious (Woodson's punt return and INT, the D-Line playing out of its mind in the 4th quarter, celebrating all night afterwards), one idiotic memory will always stick with me from that day.

I  got to the game 3 hours early with two of my friends just to get seats in the front row of the student section (right around the 10 yard line).  We then inexplicably gave our tickets away to a complete stranger 90 minutes before kickoff - a random dude on the field who said he was a former Michigan captain looking to get a couple of his buddies into the stadium and that he would bring the tickets right back

We never got the tickets back (shocking, I know) and proceeded to sit through the entire game nervous about both the outcome and whether the ushers would kick us out of the stadium (not sure what they're like today, but during my senior year especially, the ushers in the student section were anal as hell).  We spent the whole game in someone else's assigned seats even after giving our tickets away, and we did so at the biggest home game since 1969.  To this day I still don't know how we didn't get kicked out.  Instead, we had a front row seat for a classic game and were among the first to rush the field after it was over.

If you've got some good stories to share, please do so.  Anything beats another post about the misery of this season right now.

It was my first Michigan game....it was a COLD rainy MISERABLE day but at kickoff the skies cleared the rain stopped. We all left the game thinking we were going to the Rose Bowl...and we all know the rest of the story....

man those were some fun times as an 8-10 year old.  Then the 2003 game was a blast as well.  Was at 2011.  So I'm 3-0 at the Big House in the Ohio game.  But being stationed in Okinawa means I won't be there this year

I was a student at Bowling Green and living in my fraternity house. Since it was BG, most everyone had another favorite team, and since it was Ohio, most were fans of Ohio State. For the game, all the OSU fans decided to have a gathering at an off campus location, so I was essentially alone in the house. When the game was over and the OSU fans started trickling in, I could hear them shouting in frustration and slamming doors...I couldn't help myself. I decided to serenade them with "The Victors" whilst running through the halls. This ended with me at the bottom of a stairwell getting "beaten" by an angry mob. It was totally worth it.

2006. I had tickets on the 30 yard line about 20 rows up. Easily be of the happiest days in my football watching life.

2006. Bo had just passed. Michigan and Ohio State put on a show for the ages. We come up short, but no one hung their heads. We didn't want to fire anyone. A great team lost to another great team. Hard fought, clean game. A matchup of equals in the greatest rivalry in sport. The way it ought to be. The last time its been so. Not my favorite, because we lost, but what a game!

Definitely 2011. The only other OSU games I went to were in the mid 80's, when we were winning. I went to the one in 1986 in Columbus, which we won, but the fans were nasty and Skyline Chili didn't make up for it. In 2011, I went with my son, who was 11 at the time. We hadn't won a game - any game -  that I attended since college (referred to as The Kurse). So the moment we won, I knew The Kurse was over. And then the elation, and the storming the field, and the music, and the shared glee we all felt. Every time I hear whatever songs they were playing, it takes me right back to that moment.

I know this is taboo on The Blog, but seeing as I can't do it myself I'll pose the question here:

What would you give up for a win on Saturday?

I would give up red meat for 6 months and/or my sense of smell for 6 months (that isn't that helpful anyway). Yes, I'm serious about both.

I was very young in 2003 and the win didnt really hit me much. I knew Michigan won, but I didnt know that beating OSU was like having a 10 win season. 2006 was just amazing for me but we lost the game. 2011 was the first win over OSU in my understadning college football level. I guess 2011 will have to do it for me.

I was in the student section for the '69 game. I won't reprise the game itself but thought the board would enjoy this anecdote. After celebrating wildly in the stands after the game our group repaired to my apartment at 720 S. State for further lubrication. As we partied on we heard a great commotion outside the windows facing the street. Looking out we saw fans coming up the middle of State Street carrying a goal post. I think the one from the south end zone. They proceeded to deposit it in the Diag where it stayed for a day or two as a fitting exclamation point for "the greatest victory in the history of the world."

as we all went apeshit in the stands. And the halftime show featured a flyover directly over the stadium by a group of F4 Phantoms flying a missing man formation in honor of the MIAs in Vietnam. I was standing on the very top row of seats in the north end zone, and they were flying so low and fast that they were on top of us with no warning. I was lucky I didn't shit myself, but Woody crapped his pants when Darden broke up the pass in the waning moments of the game.

2003 was amazing. Braylon and Perry just tearing up the #2 Buckeyes. I remember sitting there and thinking that on that particular Saturday we were the best team in the country. I still believe if we didn't have such a layoff, we would have beaten USC that year.

2011 is an honorary second. The crowd was amazing, and the sky seemed the limit for Hoke and this staff.

'96 in Columbus. The beyond stunned reaction of the Ohio fans at the end of the game is the absolute best thing I've ever experienced. I also still have grass clippings from being on the field after the '97 game. And was there in '91 for The Pose.

Man, I miss the '90s.

I guess the best was watching Desmond's punt return. We (my brother and myself) saw it from the endzone behind him so we could see what he was looking at and stood as he started running. We had no idea he did the pose in the other end till we got home and saw it on the news.

One memory was strange though it was after we lost at the shoe, well we left before it was over but as we were walking out to our car for that sad drive home. We walked into of all people Walter Smith in the parking lot. Not only was this strange but it was the year he supposedly gave them some "locker room material" by saying "we want to get Cooper fired" at one of the press conferences. So I mentioned to him the entire stadium was in there talking about him and or looking for him because we heard them yelling at us Cooper won't get fired this year, and where's Walter at now? I believe he was hurt or in trouble I don't remember why he didn't play but there he was wandering around the parking lot like us at the end of the game.Oh what did he say to me about the Bucks looking for him "bring them on" looking around like if he saw one he would confront them. Jim Morrisons father talked to us at the Shoe during halftime of the game we went way ahead and then then they came back but we finally won. I have many more but not enough time to write them all down. GO BLUE!  EDIT NTJM

The insanity inside the stadium during and after those plays, compared with relative quiet right before the plays was one freaking incredible change in emotion.

1985 was my senior year. Great seats as a senior at the 40 yd. Will always remember that ball was seeming in the air for 15 seconds (not really) and then gently dropped into Kolesar's hands. And it wasn't over as the race to the EZ was sheer madhouse in the stadium. We knew for some seconds it was a TD.

In 1997, Woodson cleared the punter and had a lane down the sideline for about 50 yds. Nothing but grass and a trophy waiting for him.

In 1985, Ohio had cut the lead to 20-17 on a 4th down pass to Cris Carter. Bo ran into the line on 1st down for 3 and then shocked the stadium with that long bomb. Harbaugh got killed by safety on a blitz and stood in the pocket even though he knew he was going to get nailed.

The 1997 return had some of the prettiest blocking along the sideline I've ever seen, with a great block to beat the punter.

The 1985 game started late afternoon and was cool seeing the field in lights and dark in the stands for the TD.

p.s. Courtney Avery may never have more than one good play in his entire Michigan career but the diving INT two yrs ago was pretty special, especially after JT Floyd almost got smoked for a TD bomb.

Saturday will be my 45th consecutive Michigan-Ohio State game. How can I choose just one?

1969-The defense coming through over and over again in the 2nd half.

1971--"Touchdown, Billy Taylor!" followed by Woody's antics.

1976--The DEEP satisfaction of 22-0 after four years of frustration. And in Columbus.

1978--Three in a row! And the Michigan Band leaving Ohio Stadium doing the Gator chop--denoting OSU's holiday destination.

1985--Harbaugh to Kolesar.

1986--Jimmy Harbaugh coming through on his guarantee.

1988--Kolesar covers the length of the field.

1993--Upsetting the undefeated Bucks 28-0!

1995--Tshimanga Biakabutuka carries the team on his back.

1996--Tai Streets streaking to the end zone past a fallen Ron Springs.

1997--Charles catches passes. Charles makes an interception. Charles returns a punt for a TD.

2000--Drew Henson engineering the winning drive.

2003--The 100th Game! Chris Perry carries the load.

Alas, the pickings get slim after that. Time to create some new memories!

2003 I was in 4th grade, so I went almost my entire k-12 schooling without actually seeing a victory over osu. I live near the Michigan-Ohio border so it was pretty terrible. But 2011 was a great way to end high school.

3rd trip to the 'Shoe. Had seen a UM tie in '92 and loss in '94. OSU undefeated and #2. Seats down low right by the MMB. Buckeyes move the ball well in 1st half but settle for 3 FGs. Can feel tension in stands. Beginning of 3rd quarter, Griese to Streets, and a collective moan from the crowd. Michigan keeps pounding the ball, two more FGs, two girls teaching is a "Move the chains Move the chains MOVE-THE-CHAINS" chant, celebrating with band, looking up at a silent 'Shoe at the end of the game. Good times.

And of course '97, celebrating so much two bleachers broke.

I've only been a Michigan fan since 2004, my freshman year. Suffice it to say 2011 is my only taste of victory, though the entire 2006 season was quite a time to be on campus. It's hard to describe the electricity in the air over the course of the season, and the surreal feeling that washed over campus as word of Bo's passing spread. 2006 was basically a slow, steady build into a crescendo during Ohio State week (they were still Ohio State back then). The entire season was really about the epic showdown everyone wanted to see at the end, and we got that. Too bad it didn't turn out for the best.

2011. Finally getting that win over them where I can remember the full details of the game. 2003 I was in second grade. When Avery picked off that pass, it was probably my greatest moment as a fan. Years of frustration and harassment and barely remembering what it feels like beating them ending. I cried when they got that win. So overwhelmed with happiness.

I thought Michigan games were intense (we had just moved to A2 that summer) but this was something else. I had a great view from the side as Leach went around the left tackle and stretched with both hands to get the ball onto the goal line - it looked like he just elongated his whole body for a second. A great introduction to The Game.

Being in the stands in 2003 when I was student as Perry and Navarre took it to OSU for the Big 10 championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl. I remember the score of 35-21 being actually closer than the game - we had the 14 point lead from kick-off on. We rushed the field afterwards wearing t-shirts and jeans in an oddly warm OSU game (like 60 degrees in Novemebrr warm).

my favorite memory is not even a year when we played the Buckeyes at home.  I was just a nerdy 9th grade veteran of the Scarlett Jr. High school of hard knocks, in the fall of '76.  All of us 9th grade girls all over town, worshipped at the shrine of Rick Leach.

Attended all the home games with my Dad.  The final home game in our undefeated season was against Illinois.  The mood in the stadium was electric, and this was well before the age of enhanced electronics that dictate to you exactly when you should feel electric... and alive... and support your team.

We had that atmosphere, of electricity, without being prompted.

After the win, as the team left the field, the entire stadium began a chant, again unaided by a video screen with loud sound system, that left such an impression on me I can still hear it, and visualize it 37 years later.... it started somewhere under the Press Box sections and grew to a groundswell and a roar, delivered to the team as they filed out of the stadium:  "beat ohio....beat ohio....Beat Ohio...

BEAT OHIO..... BEAT OHIO!!!!"

I still get chills thinking about it.

We went on to the '77 Rose Bowl that year, a year that many might remembe we should have won but the officals gave USC freshman Charlie White a touchdown when the film showed him fumbling the ball away on the one yard line.  This was obviously before rules were put in place to fix that type of scenario.

Oh, man, what a tough one...

First Michigan-OSU game I can remember was 1988, and what a bang to start with.

Then I got to see my first "favorite Michigan player" strike the Heisman pose in 1991.

The 1993 beatdown was epic.

1995 was great. The Game was a rare (for that time) Thanksgiving weekend affair, and we were in Chicago visiting family. That was the year of Northwestern's renaissance, and they needed an OSU loss to get to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1948. We were surrounded by NW fans, so that was cool. And even better than 313 yards for Touchdown Tim was Terry Glenn getting his smack talk shoved down his throat. A nice reversal after the same thing had happened to Walter Smith the previous year in Columbus.

1997 was my first time going to The Game. I was a sophomore in high school and got to rush the field afterward. I don't know if anything can top doing that in a Rose Bowl-clinching game. Bonus, Stanley Jackson's pick-six at the hands of Andre Weathers may be the most hilarious play from the The Game in all its history.

...although I got to do it again in 2003. And was legal to drink this time.

And why not one more time in 2011? I was a month from 30th birthday and that gave me a second's pause as I considered whether I was "too old", but then I realized I was a month from my 22nd birthday last time Michigan beat them, and I'd better get my ass down there. It was also my girlfriend's first trip to the Big House, so obviously that was very special for her.

Worst, anyone?

2005 - I was home on leave before deploying and hadn't been to the Big House since '03, so I jumped at a last-minute chance to go despite being severely hungover from kicking off my going-away weekend in style Friday night. And despite that hangover, I could sense all fourth quarter that lead wasn't lasting...

2006 - two weeks away from coming home from same deployment. So pumped to buy National Championship Game tickets as my welcome home present. And then...Shawn Crable and Morgan Trent sdlkfjsdlfkdjglsdjgodfjg;ghlkfjl

Wangler to Carter touchdown pass.  From the endzone seats, we could not see the catch.  Just Carter emerging behind the DB for the touchdown.  Those were the days.

Making it on the field after the 2003 victory!  It is something that will very likely never happen again because I am too old and fat now to jump down. Now I must hope I become successful enough to get on the field "legitimately."

My favorites are from my growing up years: 1) Dennis Franklin 4th and inches 9 yard TD run 2) Ron Simpkins late fumble recovery in 1977 3) Robert Thompson sack of Art Schlicter on the final play in 1980 Not a game moment but i loved staying home from school and listening to JP McCarthy's day before the game pep rally on WJR.
