What Was Your 1st Gameday Experience

Submitted by Saint_in_Blue on

With the first game of the 2015 season upon us, this got me reminiscing about my first Michigan game. It was 1990 ( I was only 9) in South Bend against #1 Notre Dame. We had endzone seats which was cool because we could see Touchdown Jesus over the other side of the stadium. I know a lot of people hate Notre Dame, but they have an amazing campus. And even though Michigan ended up losing 28-24, I fell in love with Michigan because of that experience.

So what was everybody else's first experience, home and/or away? What memories did you take away?

Bump Elliott beat brother Pete Elliott and Illinois 8-7.  The attendance that day: 63,665.  I was eight years old.  I think this is the earliest date here so far: November 5, 1960.

I also had tickets to some 1966 games (Kill Bubba, Kill). I was sitting next to some MSU fans during halftime of the Michigan game and one said "They may not be that good at football but you have to admit they have a really good band."  The first pat of that idea didn't last too much longer, but the second is still going strong.

M 24 IU 16. 2 TD s for Desmond, 1 I think a punt return. IU was pretty good that year, Trent Green at QB, played on Sunday's. Thomas Green, receiver, played on Sunday's. Anthony Thompson, RB, also played on Sundays. Our D stopped IU on our 2 yard line late on 4 th and goal. I am just so glad I didn't have a stroke. Really. I was beside myself at the end. Went to Arborland mall after the game and still felt dizzy. Good times.:) Had a good dinner and a few drinks at Paesano s on Washtenaw. Felt better.

1982 season opener against Wisconsin.

I had never been to Michigan Stadium before.  It was unimpressive from the outside, being 90% underground.  But then I walked through the portal and stared out over an absolute ocean of people.  It was overwhelming.

fan: "Ugh, Moeller, you're so conservative!"

Elvis floats one up for Desmond, who beats two Irish DBs and goes horizontal to pull it in, icing the game.

me: "Whadja think of that call?"

1989 Notre Dame.  Rocket Ismail.   I saw the kickoff coverage part like the Red Sea - twice - from my freshman seats in the corner endzone..   I amost vomited before the game due to nerves.   That was as huge matchup.  And a shitty outcome.

I'm not sure if it was my first game or not but it was the day before my 7th birthday in 1992......and for my birthday present I sat through the 5-0 game against Purdue. The fog and snow limited visability to less than 100 feet. We were in corner endzone seats and all of the action happened at the other end of the field. It was awful but was something that I will never forget.

I was about 10 years old. My dad took me to see UM beat Washington State. Jumbo Elliott and Jaimie Morris were on the cover of the program. Morris was on a stool. I could dig it up and get the date. The game was close, but never in doubt and a great time was had by all.

My brother was a hippy freshman in the Res College and got my dad and I tickets to the Missouri game. We were blown out  40 -17 and there was a mass exodus because we looked bad. Moved up close for the last part of the game and the band 's postgame show. Who knew we would beat OSU and go to the Rose Bowl.

My first game was in 1960 against Northwestern coached by Ara.  There was a downpour the entire game.  UM won 14-7.  I've been hooked on UM football ever since.

First D-1 college game-- Halloween 1998, PSU-Illinois.  A good friend of mine was getting his Masters at Penn State, so went out to watch a game.  It was a shutout, 28-0.

First Michigan game-- 2007-- after the Horror, Michigan at Northwestern.  Henne came in slightly injured to save the day on the road.  Little to no tailgating.

First game at the Big House?  11/15/2008-- Michigan Northwestern.  I've never been that wet or cold.  Cool to watch the Victor's march, but it was a bad game all the way around.

I graduated in 1978. I'm from New York and I had never been to a college football game before I got to Ann Arbor. I honestly can't recall who Michigan played in the first game I saw, but Bo was the coach and Rick Leach was the quarterback. I went to every home game and during my entire junior and senior year I never once saw them lose at home. And the scores were ridiculous. I am pretty sure we beat  Wisconsin 56-0 and Northwestern 69-0. Those are the scores I  remember off the top of my head, but there were a lot of games lIke that. I was young and thought it would always be like that.  Hoping we will see times like that again...

So I don't really remember the game. I remember my favorite players were Rick Leach, Butch Woolfolk, and then Anthony Carter. They used to sell these little plastic UM football players outside the stadium and I had one with Butch Woolfolk's number. Loved that thing...
