What if Brandon did actually hire a Harbaugh?

Submitted by bluenectarine on

I know according to John U, Henson <smirk> and others, hell freezes over that either Harbaugh would come aboard with Brandon in place....but what if Brandon is successful in hiring a Harbaugh. Does he save his job? I got to say yes...what say you?

New president can talk all he wants about athletics coming second. But reality sets in with millions of committed funds for new facilities etc. Revenue from football and basketball matter to the university and it's not like the guy can show up and move the direction of the university away from athletics (particularly with that cheque from the B1G coming in each year).

For right or wrong Michigan is wed to big time athletics and the sooner the new guy realizes this the better.

If that DB stays I go....Honestly, there isn't one single thing or a plethora of things the jackass could do that would save his job. I don't care who he'd hire or what he'd do, he needs to go....NOW!

My opinion is that if DB got Captain Comeback, then he is ok by me and I will let his previous dumbassery slide. I like wins and JH will win. I almost want them to work together for this reason.

DB: Hey Jim, I normally like to sit in on film sessions with the coaches.

JH: pfffffffffttttttt. Good one DB, good one. Oh, you are serious? Get the fuck out of my office and stay out of my way. Thanks.

What if Brandon was fired and pack all his shit away with him.  And then they hired someone like Brad Bates from BC who knows what the hell he is doing.  And then what if Bates hired Harbaugh? Much more satisfying.

If that miracle happened, he would gain a lot of support back from me. Main reason being, he decided to put his own ego aside and do what was needed. I do not see that ever happening, unfortunately.

If he hires a Harbaugh, and that Harbaugh wins a lot of games for us, I will forgive him for everything and I suspect everyone else would, too. I think demand for tickets would go up overnight and we'd have a bit of a wait list again. Ticket prices would continue to rise and we would gladly pay for them. I dont know that any such hire is likely, but I also dont understand the board's unwillingness to entertain the hypothetical. The board is very Hoke-like in this regard.

The football Wins and Losses are relatively low on the priority of why David Brandon should be fired.

  • Poor PR and Crisis Management skills: most evident in the handling of the Shane Morris concussion aftermath.
  • Alienation of students from major sports (overpricing student tickets for football, overselling student tickets for basketball), thus reducing future fans.
  • Alienation of alum/fan season ticket holders for football. Overcharging and then offering discounts to others for the sake of capturing consumer surplus is how you treat consumers, not fans.

Due to all of the above, I've gone from a lock to buy season tickets next year, my first season as a graduate, to planning to buy a game at a time on stub hub/groupon/living social.

You had different opinions on what you would want of Brandon if a Harbaugh did get hired by him. That is why I asked the question, because I couldn't decide at first....but when I did decide I would keep him, of course it made me realize I just want to be a winning football school more than anything....

Why would we want a guy who doesn't even believe that players recruited by Michigan under Rodriguez are part of the Michigan family?

Seriously, Dave Brandon lost me forever last year with that idiotic open letter that shit all over a bunch of guys who helped Brady Hoke have the only success he's ever known at Michigan.

There are better people who can do anything that Dave Brandon has done well just as well (or better) and wouldn't humiliate the university and alienate the fanbase.

Others have touched on it, but at this point, I don't think any landmark hire necessarily equates to forgiveness in the case of David Brandon. The problems are larger than just the performance of the football program and things like the monetization of tradition, the disrespect that comes from longtime season ticket holders and others being treated merely as consumers, and what amounts to rather cold attitude towards the people who cheer for this program are symptoms of a bigger disconnect in the department. There's no guarantee that this changes even with a big name hire short of Brandon either being effectively neutralized as a director somehow or simply let go.

The coaching hire was obviously awful from dave brandon, but that is only part of the equation of why he should be fired. PR issues and nickle and diming is why the fanbase is so upset with brandon too and not just focusing all the blame on Hoke

It would be interesting to see that's for sure. I would wait for the day when Brandon walks into a film session while Harbaugh is in there, and Jim turning to him and saying "get the fuck out of here"

have added up to too much discontent.   Over 11,000 people signed the petition in less then  36 hours.

Schlissel is not going to keep an AD who has created this much unhappiness.

IF DER SCHLOCKMEISTER hired John or Jim I'd be pleased with his acomplishment, and still want him gone.

But then again, he's been good with the non-revenue sports. If he were to make a full confession that his policies have led to degrading and devaluing the U of M tradtition, which we've been building for almost two hundred years, and commit to totally change his ways, he might deserve another chance.

But now we're talking beyond the realm of hypothetical, and into the stratosphere of lunacy.  Not gonna' happen.

Bottom line: The sooner he and Uncle Hoke are gone, the better.

I would first drop my trousers to allow all the monkeys that had just flown out my butt to escape before they further traumatized my backside. I would then launch a search for Mr. Harbaugh's recently misplaced testicles in the hopes that upon restoring his scrotum to its proper load, that he would then have Mr. Brandon confined somewhere incommunicado, where he cannot do further damage.

I assume the OP is referring to Rick Harbaugh, Associate Professor of Business Economics, from the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, as he is the only Harbaugh that would realistically come to Michigan while Brandon is in charge.  He is a published author on business topics pertinent to Brandon's Michigan branding strategy, ranging from "cheap talk" to "persuasive puffery."  He seems like a perfect fit for Brandon's Athletic Department, but I suspect he would be more interested in a visiting position with the B School.  Excellent hire, but to the OP's question, I don't think it would affect whether Brandon keeps his job.

Dave Brandon just isn’t qualified for the job. He had no experience or background as an athletic director and it shows.  The same thing can be said for Martin, Goss and Roberson as well.  All good men. Mostly good fund-raisers but none had backgrounds as athletic directors.

That, in large part, is how we find ourselves in this mess today.

So, was DB to someone do the right thing and get Jim Harbaugh to come home, he should still be let go and replaced by someone who really understands the job.

That our athletic department is a mess. Please explain. It is more financially sound. New sports team were added. New facilities built. Our teams have been very successful. So, I do not get the general statement that our athletic department is a mess.

You can say the football program is a mess and that Brandon handled the Morris situation extremely poorly, but you cannot equate this to the entire athletic program.
