What good omens/charms around Michigan football have you experienced before?

Submitted by ShittyPlaceKicker on November 27th, 2019 at 8:37 PM

During the 2003 Michigan-Minnesota game my family and I were eating Chinese food during half-time and my dad got a fortune cookie that said, “You will soon witness a miracle.” Michigan ended up coming back and winning the game.

I’m eating Chinese food right now, and my fortune cookie says, “Good luck bestows upon you. You will get what your heart desires.” I’m really hoping this is a sign about Saturday.

What good luck charms or omens have worked for you all in the past?

I'm an old man, and all I can tell you are four things:

What comes around goes around/Karma is a bitch.

When all ya got is hope, ya got nothing.

Life is probability and outcome. Math is as close to understanding the universe as you will know in your lifetime.

If you treat people the way you want to be treated, you will trend along the line of happiness, unless you are fucked by No. 3.

Gotta disagree with you on 1, 2 and 4 pops.

1. Karma is bs. If it was real Osu would never be where they are and Dantonio sure as hell would never have beaten Michigan in 2015.

2. If I didn't have hope I would be dead.

4. I tried this one real hard. My in laws are still huge selfish pieces of shit. Thanksgiving is going to suck tomorrow, revert back to why your #2  and #1 are wrong.

Bottom line is this....There's too much poppin in this world and not enough shine.

If your in-laws are affecting your happiness that’s kinda on you.  My father in law (RIP) hated me his whole life but I never gave a fuck, treated him well and with respect, and still had a great time around him.  I think that made him hate me more ha ha

I hear you, but here's the thing. That makes you fake af. If I don't like someone they gonna know it. I can't be fake, not in my blood. I wish I could though cause yeah you prolly gotta over on him nice with being that way.

Politeness aside, don't you get tired of taking the high road all the time???

My MIL is a cunt... she accuses me of trying to get her daughter killed or that I'm controlling because we go mountain biking, skiing, and we were in Paris on 13 November 2015.

She judges everything and speaks horribly of mostly everyone.  She plays favorites with her two daughters -- and my wife is the one that gets shit on.  One time when I was away on business, my wife (then GF) tried to kill herself over it (I didn't know at the time as I was out of the country) but fortunately wasn't successful.  When my GF got counseling later, and mom found out, mom mocked her for going to a shrink.

So my MIL doesn't affect my happiness per se.  When I proposed, I didn't ask that bitch for her blessing... not going to let her dictate my happiness.  But yeah, holidays suck when she's around -- I'm totally down with everything in @Eli's first reply.  I'm amazed at how shitty people in this world get to be shitty all the time and the people they shit on have to bite their tongues.

When we first started dating, I was wondering why my wife was so into Halloween.  She throws a legendary party (people on FB start asking about it in July), decorates to the hilt, and has a ton of fun.

Then after meeting dear ol mom, now I know why.  Because "it's that time of the year" sucks for a lot of people.

Halloween is the holiday where (good) family and friends can get together, without any expectations, without any judging or gossip, or someone getting butthurt over nothing and carrying a grudge for the next year, and just let loose and enjoy each other.

1.  FALSE.  The good die young and way too much fucked up shit happens for this to be true.

2.  FALSE.  Miracles happen all the time.

3.  HALF FALSE.  Probability is the potential for something to happen.  It really only applies to populations.  Not each persons life.  Most people really don’t understand probability/statistics and what it means.  You’re right about math (as long as you’re including chemistry/physics).

4.  TRUE.

If all is you got is hope then it is on you to come up with a plan.

Karma is real but it may take some time.  RIP John Lennon - Instant Karma

I am surprised by how often I am told that my encouragement some twenty years ago has not been forgotten (but unmentioned for 20 years.)

I know I took a leap forward the day I could make my pitch with an adversary in the room without dreading their rebuttal, abuse, or sarcasm.

Perrin Black Ale is in the fridge until Michigan loses.  Rubbing a chunk of Wolverine sandstone from the Wolverine mine hasn't got the job done.

And what of those (The majority on this rock) whose only hope is in Allah?

What of those never exposed to, let alone indoctrinated into Christianity?

Old man's theory: God knew we were too imperfect and incapable of agreeing on anything, so he gave people different paths. Christ, Allah, Muhammad, Buddha, among others.

God saw the probability of agreement on a universal religion as zero. The plan was to establish a moral framework that we apes could at least loosely follow.

No. 1 is subject to No. 3. That's why people like like George Bush and Bill Clinton are living long, full lives.

No. 2 does not mean the end of you, it just means you are completely subject to No. 3. If the outcome was to your liking, it wasn't hope that did it, it was just the outcome. That's not to say that faith, positive attitude and emotional support are meaningless (Especially where health crisis are concerned), just that probability and outcome are the driving forces.

Anyone that does not believe in No. 3 is out of touch with reality. It not only applies to, but defines the individual.

One recent manifestation: The monetization of "private" data. Nothing more than leveraging your data to tip the odds in the favor of the house.

The only year I've had season tickets since I graduated was 2010, and that was because the Alumni Association made them available for cheap—I didn't have to pay a seat license or make any donation to the athletic department. Which is an indication that demand was way down. Why?

It’s usually when I give up all hope that the team turns things around and surprises me, like this entire season following the Wisconsin game. Lucky boxer shorts, t-shirts and jerseys never work for me, no matter how hard I try.

1) Fortunes are fun if you insert: “ in bed” after said fortune.

2) Not superstitious, the better team usually wins.

3) I believe in the “hot hand.” Maybe someone with a better understanding of statistics will support or refute that claim.

4) The most Michigan thing ever...or at least for the last 20 years would be to beat OSU but have them win the NC. Honestly, I’ll take it.
