Well Dang, Suddenly We're Looking Pretty Damn Intimidating

Submitted by Michigan CFB R… on April 3rd, 2020 at 11:24 AM

Last night was a very good night for the good guys. We took almost the entire southwest and half of California, while also maintaining a presence in the Midwest (presumably to harass Ohio State?). While we still need to consolidate our gains, we now have the third most territories in the game. Not bad.

But more importantly, our army grew substantially. Remember how OSU looked to be building a juggernaut just a turn ago? Well, Wolverine nation managed to close the power gap in a hurry. While we have 32 less players than OSU (and 85 less than TAM), we have just 9 less power. In fact, Michigan and OSU are the only two teams with more than 1,400 power, and TAM (3rd place by power) has just 1130.

We need to keep the momentum going, though. We know Ohio State is going to fight tooth-and-nail to beat us, and we need to return the favor with equal fervor. Keep playing, keep recruiting, and let's make sure to continue to close the gap. Go Blue! Let's keep this train rolling!

How Does the Game Work?

On turn 1, each team starts with their home territory. It is up to each team to recruit players and coordinate moves. You can choose to defend any territory that your team currently holds or attack any adjacent territory. A "roll" happens each evening at 11 PM EST to calculate which teams have won which territories that turn based on the moves that were made by individual players. The ultimate goal is to conquer as much of the map as possible for your team. There are a number of different ways to do this, such as through recruiting players in sheer numbers or forming alliances with other teams.

The CFB Risk website isn't terribly informative. Can someone ELIF how it works in the following scenarios:

1) 2 different players attack the same territory on the same turn (e.g., Michigan and Texas A&M both attack Kansas - owned by Nebraska)

2) 2 players attack each other on the same turn (e.g., Michigan in UCLA vs. Stanford in Fresno State). If both teams win their attacks, do they swap territories?

Each individual has a star value that determines their contribution to a total number of points they can assign to their attack. At the end of the day, the total number of points are combined for each team to determine their probability of winning the territory. For example:

  • Team A has two people attacking a territory, one with 3 stars and one with 2.
  • Team B has two people attacking, both with 4 stars.
  • Team C has two people defending, both with 1 star.

For simplicity, we'll assume that the points are just equal to stars.

  • Team A's points on the territory would be 3 + 2 = 5
  • Team B's would be 4 + 4 = 8
  • Team C's would be (1 + 1) * 2 = 4 (points are doubled when defending)

From there, the random number generator would determine the winner based on the probabilities of 5/17, 8/17, and 4/17 for each team respectively. Winner gets the territory.

Swapping territories probably happens a lot in cases where teams neglect to assign anyone to defend.

If you get an order please follow it. It messes up the star distribution because it thinks that you are going to be making that play and you don't. You may be assigned a territory with only one or two other players, if you don't play there then we could fail there. If you don't intend to follow the orders, its better if you just don't get one to begin with.

Assignments come from the mods on the discord that formulate a general strategy and are in communication with nearly every team on strategy/diplomacy.

Fwiw, if you continue to grab assignments, but ignore them you will eventually get blacklisted from taking an order.

You're welcome to do your own thing and not get an assignment. We'd rather you don't, but it's still better than not playing. However, please don't grab an order and then choose to ignore it. That's the worst thing you can do as it messes up the number of people we expect to have on each territory.

Made my move, and ready to keep the momentum going.

Things like this that pop up during times like these just help to make people feel normal again. Thanks for everyone that is helping to make this happen.

Wow this is a lot easier than I expected. Was able to sign up brand new to reddit in one minute, and the orders take 2 seconds (literally) to execute. No reason we shouldn't win the whole damn thing...

Thank you for coming over to rescue me here on the Coast. Just please get rid of that last bit of red that surrounds me out of here.  Looking forward to seeing the M nation outside my door 6’ away.

Anyone know what the current alliance picture looks like? I've been executing my assignments but haven't really been paying attention otherwise.

Can you preface the title with "CFB Risk" or something so that the rest of us can know not to click?
