This Week In Photoshop: The Stadium
I shall now attempt to lose all my points by posting the following concept of new endzone decks and painted endzones.
Let the wrath ensue:
I'm not sure if this would work well and am not saying it is a good idea, but I've wanted to see what it might look like for a while and perhaps others have too. Thus, a rough concept was born.
You may now proceed to harpoon me for sacreligious photoshopping and sub-par fandom, or you can surprise me and discuss the idea.

before the building process might ever begin. there is evidence that even the biggest of programs aren't filling their stadiums (too lazy to find the links, sorry) and that attendance in college football in general is drifting downward. throw in the fact that the whole concussion issue is only just now starting to work it's way through the sport, starting at the pop warner level on up, with a fair chance you are going to see fewer kids come through the system - maybe a lot fewer.
of course michigan with JH at the helm is going to fill the big house, but he won't stay forever. if we plan and build all of that in 5 years, and JH retires/leaves in, say, 10, who knows how long that extra capacity would be used.
as an aside, that is an excellent photo shop. well done.
For suggesting that Harbaugh will only be here 10 years. Extra chores for you today.
"after JH leaves in 2056, having 2 dozen nat'l championship trophies under his belt."
better now?
92 is a good age for him to retire. And by retire I mean keel over dead after winning The Game for the 38th time in a row.
/That's how I'd want to go.

Each color of Michigan maize is its own precious little snowflake.
End zone maize, helmet maize, jersey maize, pants maize, receiver glove maize, hand warmer maize, Harbaugh's hat maize . . . none of them ever match.
If I ran the AD, I would assign someone who's sole job it is to MAKE ALL THE FUCKING MAIZE MATCH!!
How hard is that?
You have one job.
The only problem is you would have some obstructed view seats. Back when I was in High School, I use to be able to buy student tickets at the gate and sit in the upper northwest end zone. Maybe they could bring that back to fill the seats.
I have sat in those same seats. Big price difference.

It's off-season.
I heard some LSA Seniors are going to re-write The Victors.

the extra revenue could help bring concession prices down. $20 for two pretzels and sodas? wtf
it would limit our scoreboard to the size it is now. NOOOOO I'm looking for the day we have a scoreboard the whole width of the open end zone.
Now if you could add seats the whole width and a Yuge, scoreboard on top!
Lets see a photoshop of that!

Looks great!
You should do another one with the suites wrapped all the way around. That's the most likely scenario to actually happen, not double decks in the end zones.

Give those seats out to radio stations to give away free. I know our local radio stations give away free tickets to the local race tracks and people always go nuts over that, plus they spend more on concession stand items if it was free to get in. Everyone likes something for free and with new video board problem would be solved on blind spots. Just a idea
Be set forward some.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Yeah, sight-lines are a potential issue - I'm sure the architects could solve that in a clean way.
Have you considered enclosing the end zones with the boxes themselves? With a wider screen that actually might look even cleaner (I have no idea what the market for premium seating in the end zones would be, maybe marketed to a younger family-type experience?).
Not too bad. Would be a loud stadium. I wonder if they would only do a single teir at a time?
Endzones in your pic look sweet, but I've never really liked the look when its done for bowl games.
That looks really good, actually. I'd be perfectly fine adding those end zone sections.
EDIT: The blue end zones absolutely need to become reality.
Good call on removing that ugly cell phone antenna thing that is on top of the boxes now.
Dont know why they can't disguise that with a big block M or something. It is UGLY!!!
And a better place to stick the opposing fans, to be perfectly honest.
That's an awesome concept. Obstructed-view and nosebleed seats go to the opponent. It is Harbaugh's goal that all opponents leave with obstructed views and nosebleeds.
Looks good to me. I think the school does have such plans but the question is whether or not it will do it. Thanks for the pic.
Think this looks good. Thanks for doing it.
It would be interesting to hear from any MGoArchitects and structural engineers on cantilevering the two decks or could they get away with simply extending the existing bowl structure without going to another deck? I think that would preserve some of the symmetry of the original structure and not create a situation where some views (high up in the lower deck) are potentially obstructed.
I'd heard years ago that Yost put the footings in for a second deck that would potentially expand the stadium to his dream of 150,000 seats. Would be interesting to know whether those (if they really exist) could be used now or if new construction would be required.
Decks will take time, obviously, but MAN those endzones look beautiful. Would love for them to surprise me when I make my way into the Big House in September!
Yeah, an awning or roof would be a nice architectural touch to keep sound in the bowl.
I think I get what you're going for: a level continuation of the bowl around the perimeter of the stadium, featuring seating in the endzone instead of walled glass.
But unless i'm missing something you've got a VERY awkward transition from glass walls angled in, to 2 tiered seating that naturally slants backwards.
Looks wrong to me.
Maybe some extra seating (I'm all for increasing capacity) in the lowerportion of your endzone additions, with a matching angled glass boxs above/behind them that flow around from the sides.
Essentially loose the 2nd upper seating deck & replace it with 1 level of luxury boxesto continue the oval stadium ring.
Can you do one that employs an idea mentioned above. Take the stands all the way across and put a jumbo tron ala Dallas stadium re size all the way across the top too?
Also, can you estimate the new capacity? Can we get 150K?
I feel the Big House is absent an attendance concern with Harbaugh and Manuel driving the excitement and understanding how to price tickets to keep the big house full at 150K seats.
:)
