Week 11 CFP Rankings: Michigan #3, Wisconsin #7, PSU #8, Colorado #10

Submitted by drawdown400 on

(And OSU #2)

Some (clemson fans, Louisville, Washington) will complain about Michigan's ranking despite the loss this weekend, but it's hard to argue for a drop in the rankings given Michigan's dominant wins over three top 10 teams. (Yeah, upon reflection, the win vs Wisconsin seems pretty dominant, despite the final score).

Bottom line..I like this week's edition of the CFP rankings.

I was pretty surprised. Thought 4 was our celling. The reasoning makes sense... Does anyone else have 3 wins against the current top 10? I think the current rankings are worth more than the rankings at the time.

At the end of the day this comes down to win out and your are in, drop a game and you watch like everyone else.

this has been the most perplexing ranking for the past three weeks.  They have zero (!!!) wins against the top 25.  None.  They have a loss to an unranked team.  This just does not make sense.  WVU has beaten the same teams as OU in league play, and their only loss is better than OU's worst loss of two.  Is the committee rewarding them for playing a tough non-conference schedule even though they didn't win their tough games?  Not hard to schedule tough teams and lose.  Anyone can do that.

If Iowa played that way all year I dont think they come into the game with more than 2 loses tops. I have watched Iowa play a few games this year and it was the best gameplan, in game play calling, and execution of game theory situations I have seen from their coaches. I mean, come on, that rb was clearly the best back they had but they had the other back getting mist the carries all year until Michigan. With that said, even though that was their best shot Michigan should have beat them, but gas a Murphys law thing going on. But, again if Iowa played like that all year, they would probably be around top 15. Just saying.

The brackets show us playing OSU in the first round of the Playoff.  The only way that might happen if we were both were undefeated going into The Game or a bunch of other teams have 3 losses while one of us only has 2.

The rankings today are just place holders.

No reason to be disheartened by the loss at Iowa. Nothing changes for us. Win our next 3 games and we will have beaten OSU, Won the B1G Championship, and made the CFP.

3 game season, game 1 is Saturday. Go Blue.

Actually it would be incorrect to say the Rose Bowl is taking Michigan no matter what. In fact, if Michigan loses to Ohio State in the scenario you're describing, Michigan probably will NOT go to the Rose Bowl especially if for some reason Ohio State is not taken in the playoff (which in that scenario, don't kid yourself, Ohio is going to be selected).

You have to remember that the Rose Bowl has said they will generally take the highest rated team in the CFP rankings barring extreme circumstances. Last year, they took Iowa over Ohio despite only two spots separating the two in the rankings and that Ohio State would have been a better game for Stanford and a better draw.

If Ohio State beats Michigan and Penn State or Wisconsin go to the playoff, the Rose Bowl will select Ohio State because it will be ahead of Michigan.

That will leave Michigan for the Orange Bowl, most likely, over the loser of Wisconsin-Penn State.

As I said earlier, though, Ohio State is going to be selected if they beat Michigan. So Michigan probably would indeed wind up in the Rose Bowl unless Ohio State gets in, but the CCG winner is left out.

I don't think I'm bothered by having a loss in this context so much as: 1. The way we lost, with the offense totally hopeless, and 2. Our starting QB probably won't be ready for Columbus. These two factors suggest that while we CAN still make the playoff, the probabilities of playing well enough to do so are much lower than I thought last week. If our defense can be shut down by Iowa, it can be shut down by a lot of teams. Including OSU. And now we aren't practicing with our starting QB.

Bad games happen. We hadn't scored under 32 points agains anyone all year that wasn't Wisconsin, which has the best defense we'll face during the regular season.

We have a top 5 scoring offense right now.  Assuming that O'Korn can keep the offense running (which may be a big assumption), I don't think the one performance against a fired up Iowa team in a night game at their place is a ton to be worried about.

I like to think of the Iowa loss as a momentary brain fart.  We got caught up in our own hype after basically coasting to easy victories for 9 games.  I feel like the team might be "grounded" again.  Back to reality, just like before game 1.  Someone said previously in this thread that it's now a three game season.  The guys are going to play like there's no tomorrow.  The Iowa loss may just be a blessing in disguise.

because tonight is (close to) proof that had we been 11-1 with a loss at OSU, we'd very possibly be in.  Margin for error the rest of the way is gone unless everyone keeps losing.

I agree that the O playing tight was very disheartening, but as noted, special teams killed us just as much.

I actually am comfortable with O'Korn.  He's played, and played fine.  He's mobile and makes the D play a little more 11-on-11 (even though Speight had been a bull fighter in the pocket).  And he's an unknown entity for the next two Ds to stop.  The Pepcat package now is more complex because O'Korn adds a third threat to the option.  This could actually get very interesting.

yes...this. It's not so much the loss but how they lost and they way the looked in the loss. I don't know if  you ever feel great about a lot but there could have been a scenario in a mistake free game where some fluke plays went Iowa's way and we'd feel good about the offense. They just looked so inept. I have a lot of faith in these coaches and players though and at the end of the day a lot of good teams lay and egg at some point in the season.

we would have been in very good shape to already be in the playoff.  Even with a loss to OSU, the only thing we'd have needed (other than a win against IU) obviously, was Washington to lose again (likely) and Bama to win the SEC (likely).

Basically missed the opportunity to clinch a spot.  Now the task is much more difficult, but of course, let's just win The Game.

Clemson should've lost to NC State and beat Troy by only six points.  And the win over L'ville doesn't look so good when they escaped UVA and were trailing at home in the 4th quarter to Wake Forest on Saturday.

The #3 ranking feels right compared to the other resumes.

Last week we both had two top 10 wins, so I didn't really mind them being ahead of us. Auburn losing took one of those away, and Michigan gained a 3rd with Colorado moving up. I'm actually kind of glad that the committee is showing some consistency. Seemed like they were making it up as they were going before.
