This Week's Football Recruiting Visitors

Submitted by Magnus on

Here's a quick recruiting update for this week:

Michigan is hosting/hosted several interesting prospects this week, including OT Spencer Brown (MSU commit), QB Sam Johnson, 5-star Virginia LB Brandon Smith, 4-star Georgia LB Kevin Swint, and more.

One perhaps noteworthy development is the visit of Ohio DE Gabe Newburg, who was offered on the trip. He grew up a Michigan fan and now has 11 Crystal Ball predictions in favor of Michigan.

He's not a truly elite athlete, but he's a good player overall. Plays low, decently athletic, good motor, etc. I don't think he's 6'5" like his profile says.

Like someone else said, if Don Brown/Greg Mattison like him, then he's got about an 80% chance of being good if he comes to Michigan.

I don't know if there's a specific number of DEs that's known, but we're losing Winovich and possibly Gary after this season. And Reuben Jones will be in his fourth year. So...3?

I think Michigan is trailing for Hicks, and I think Wete will end up elsewhere.

I think Michigan would accept a commitment from Newburg right now. But if they get him, they would probably have to get pretty selective.

Magnus, any idea why we’re seemingly trailing on top in-state prospects in 2019? Is it a lack of focus on in-state recruiting in favor of a more national approach in the past several years?

I think Michigan just completely dropped the ball with Barnett/Dobbs from Belleville.

I'm not sure on Brown, but I don't blame him for picking Wisconsin. If I'm an offensive lineman, I'm picking Wisconsin over Michigan. I don't think Michigan did anything wrong there.

Beyond them I don't really think Michigan is in a trail position for the "top prospects." They're in a good spot with many that they want, including #4 in-state guy Mazi Smith.

What Michigan has lacked since Tyrone Wheatley's departure is an ace in-state recruiter. Wheatley had credibility in the state of Michigan, and the current staff doesn't - except the head coach, who doesn't generally lead recruitments.

my 2nd cousin...his younger brother, also at Walled Lake is getting some offers too and he's gonna be at least a 3 star, maybe 4 star. His older brother was a D3 db, and I think was an All-American. He's a good athlete...but he has been heavy to MSU for awhile, despite my dropped hints at family functions and on FB. A second visit to UM is good though. After his first visit he stated publicly he was still solid to MSU.

We were in Ann Arbor on a tour of the big house yesterday (part of a college visit for my high school kid) and saw these guys suited up on the field. Nice to read who they were.
