This Week's Football Recruiting Visitors
Here's a quick recruiting update for this week:
Michigan is hosting/hosted several interesting prospects this week, including OT Spencer Brown (MSU commit), QB Sam Johnson, 5-star Virginia LB Brandon Smith, 4-star Georgia LB Kevin Swint, and more.
One perhaps noteworthy development is the visit of Ohio DE Gabe Newburg, who was offered on the trip. He grew up a Michigan fan and now has 11 Crystal Ball predictions in favor of Michigan.
What are your thoughts on him? Doesn't have the best offer list, but seems to have a high motor.
He's not a truly elite athlete, but he's a good player overall. Plays low, decently athletic, good motor, etc. I don't think he's 6'5" like his profile says.
Like someone else said, if Don Brown/Greg Mattison like him, then he's got about an 80% chance of being good if he comes to Michigan.
Would he be a commitable offer right now? Michigan seems to be in on a lot of good DEs with Marcus Hicks (Dad is a huge Michigan fan) and Joseph Wete. We're also on wait and see mode with Stephen Herron. How many DEs are the staff aiming for in this class?
I don't know if there's a specific number of DEs that's known, but we're losing Winovich and possibly Gary after this season. And Reuben Jones will be in his fourth year. So...3?
I think Michigan is trailing for Hicks, and I think Wete will end up elsewhere.
I think Michigan would accept a commitment from Newburg right now. But if they get him, they would probably have to get pretty selective.

How could that not be a commitable offer? If he takes his time, I could easily see that changing,
Any insight on Julian Barnett the Belleville CB committed to staee?
That kid would look great in our defensive backfield.
He would look great at WR or DB for us, but he's been pretty dismissive of his Michigan offer. I think he's still pissed that it "took so long" for Michigan to offer, so he's happy. If he were to decommit from MSU, I think it would be more likely that he heads out of state than coming to Michigan.
Thanks for the info and quick reply though.

going to the right place for disrespect. Isn't 2019 signing day just still under a year away? Many kids have to wait for the best opportunity and don't complain. We want those types anyway.
I think Michigan just completely dropped the ball with Barnett/Dobbs from Belleville.
I'm not sure on Brown, but I don't blame him for picking Wisconsin. If I'm an offensive lineman, I'm picking Wisconsin over Michigan. I don't think Michigan did anything wrong there.
Beyond them I don't really think Michigan is in a trail position for the "top prospects." They're in a good spot with many that they want, including #4 in-state guy Mazi Smith.
What Michigan has lacked since Tyrone Wheatley's departure is an ace in-state recruiter. Wheatley had credibility in the state of Michigan, and the current staff doesn't - except the head coach, who doesn't generally lead recruitments.
the state has been dominated over the past few years more than any Hoke and Rich Rod years. But the coaching staff decided to use the head start on the 2019 class to recruit guys out of state. So yes that has played a factor on the elite michigan athletes who were getting priority #1 treatment.

my 2nd cousin...his younger brother, also at Walled Lake is getting some offers too and he's gonna be at least a 3 star, maybe 4 star. His older brother was a D3 db, and I think was an All-American. He's a good athlete...but he has been heavy to MSU for awhile, despite my dropped hints at family functions and on FB. A second visit to UM is good though. After his first visit he stated publicly he was still solid to MSU.

Mazi Smith, Marvin Grant, Anthony Bradford, Mangham, Lance Dixon, and Michael Flethcher... and we will call it good.

FTR, we haven't offered Bradford or Mangham.
I want those guys, so that's better than an offer.

I added Adisa Isaac (4-star DE) to the list.
Big-time DE George Karlaftis (Purdue) visited Michigan yesterday, too.
I also added 4-star Texan WR Dylan Wright.
I added 2021 DE Jack Sawyer, who already has offers from Michigan and Penn State.
