Wednesday's renovation tours: who's going?

Submitted by Sgt. Wolverine on

Out of curiosity: who's planning to tour the stadium renovations tomorrow, and when are you planning to be there?  I'm expecting to be there sometime between 10:00 and 11:00.

Guess we could make this an "mgomeet-up?" thread as well... If that's a good time I will aim for it as well. Makes an easy transition into a state street lunch

and that there's not a substantial line.  I'm not a morning person unless I'm getting paid (and even then I'm not happy about it) so I wasn't inclined to aim for 6am, but I had to plan it on the earlier side because I have a job at 4pm.

I'll have my helmet with me, so I should be recognizable; if you spot me, be sure to say hi.

I have to be at work before 10, so I will be part of the somewhat early crowd.  I'm thinking of grabbing some breakfast at Angelo's and then heading over for a quick look, then off to work.  I'll probably try to get to the stadium around 8 or 8:30.

Wolveryan, I had a few pints of Bell's and a seafood enchilada last week at Redhawk after golf with my son,  we were bunked at Inn @ Michigan League and it was a great end to a perfect day.  You got it going on in there - keep it up!

but I don't support corporate stadiums.  After all, I can see everything from the street, and I wouldn't really be awed by the stadium when I walked in.

/snarky sarcasm

But seriously... pictures.  We need many, many pictures.

Some of us have to work to support their son's U of M addiction!   As we "speak" he is at the Blue Tractor deciding which maize beverage is worthy of his thirst...

Love that boy!

Well I'm leaving home at around 9 and it's a good hour and a half, plus construction so maybe around 11. I'm carpooling though so some unexpected stops could be included in there. I will take pictures a plenty.

To make a very long story short, in an effort to combine what I have to do with what I wouldn't miss for the world, I will have a very early morning tomorrow.  I have to catch a 3:15 pm flight to New Orleans for work and also have a solid three hours of work to finish up before I leave (I promised a colleague I'd help her on a project.)

I'm going to get in the shower at 4:30 am and should then be ready in time to get in the car by 5:30 to be in Ann Arbor by 6:30.  I'll be awed and amazed (seriously) until 7:30-8:00, hop back in the car to drive to Detroit and work for a few hours, then drive to the airport and leave for New Orleans.

I definitely have three hours of laundry ahead of me right now, so if I want to get any sleep at all I really should get off MGoBlog, but incidently my success rate with that has never been very good.

Have fun tomorrow you guys!

and take it easy with a few general, calm bars - the hotel bar in the Hotel Monteleone on the 200 block of royal is a must. i believe it's called Carousel Bar.

check out w.i.n.o. near harrah's for a cool wine setup if that's your thing. you pay per 1/4 of a glass and can sample as many as you want using a card swipe thing that lets you serve yourself, etc. frenchman street, which isn't far from the quarter, has an interesting "indie" vibe with live music, etc. DBA is a favorite of many, as is Blue Nile.

if you're going to do Bourbon, stick to Bourbon Street Blues Company or Razzoo. while they're touristy, you can't beat the 3-for-1 pricing. many of the off-street bars are worth a stop. try a hurricane at pat o's or a hand grenade while you're in town.

give the streetcar a try and venture uptown for some of my favorites. at the corner of cherokee and maple is a bar called Phillips that i absolutely love. i believe tomorrow will be $4 martini night. if you go there i'll force you to have you give them my (Brandon) best. Bruno's down the street will have $2 imports (i think). for great, affordable food try Louisiana Pizza Kitchen on carrolltown just off of st charles. the owners are fantastic. cooter browns, which is right there also at the corner of carrolltown and st charles, has a wide variety of beers and is the UM bar come football Saturdays. worth a try. traveling uptown in general (aka riding the streetcar away from the Quarter) is a solid idea for one of the days/evenings.

speaking of food, your one obligation is to eat at Mother's, which is off canal near the casino. it's a must.

there's several other suggestions (Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar has good fish tacos and decent priced beer and is near magazine, 3-4 blocks off poydras) - feel free to let me know if you need more beyond this.

Thank you so much for all the advice!  Two things off the bat: it is insanely humid here (my hair has never in my 26 years "frizzed" yet I believe it is doing so here.  Also, is it just me, or is every drink THAT much stronger down here?

You may have answered this before, but are you from NOLA?

Edit: How feasible is it to visit LSU?  Google Maps is telling me I'm ~ 70 miles from there?

If I'm not busy, I should be there 4-4:15. If I AM busy, it'll be more like 5-5:15. If the lines are like two hours long, I hope somebody will let me know.

It is absolutely breathtaking. Literally. I took a ton of pictures and will upload them when I get a chance. They're showing the '09 ND game on the scoreboards! If you can swing it, come to Ann Arbor today!

Because I wonder if I saw you....women obviously stand out at these things more than men.  It'd be funny if you were in the background of one of my pictures, or vica versa.

I thought the same thing--that I could very well be next to a fellow MGoUser.  I didn't even start laundry til after 1:00 am and didn't finish until 4:00, so I ended up being late (but not too much so!)  I toured from 8:00-9:00ish.

If there a chick with long brown hair and dark-rimmed glasses in a "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant..." MGoShirt, it's me!  What time were you there?

But I don't think I saw you....though I was there from like 7:30 to 9:15 am...just wondering if you got a later start. Because I figured the women might be easier to pick out...and remember..than the guys.
