Way too Early Bowl Prediction

Submitted by Marley Nowell on

The way things look right now Michigan will play in either the Texas Bowl or Dallas Football Classic.  Our opponent looks to be either Iowa State or Baylor, with Texas A&M a strong possibility.

Anywhere but in the D at the Pizza bowl. My MSU grad family members would make Christmas a lot less fun.

Personally I am hoping for Florida.

Hopefully, its the insight bowl.  That way I can attend when I go home for winter break.

But seriously, if we finish with 7 wins, chances are its going to be Gator/Insight depending on how the coin flips.  I figure 2 big ten teams will be in the bcs and those bowls will both pick us knowing that fans will travel to the first bowl in three years.

If we win 8 or 9, I expect us to play in the outback.  A 6 win effort would mean texas as long as there aren't 7 7-5 big ten teams in front of us.

I predict Michigan wins 48-45.  I also predict that crotchety big 10 and Michigan fans react in horror and continue to insist that a team with a great offense and a terrible defense is somehow totally less legit than a team with a great defense and a terrible offense (like every Ohio State team ever except for 2006), despite the complete DERPItude of that thought process.

I don't think the Big 10 has a tie-in to the Hawaii Bowl, but one can always dream. Michigan vs. Hawaii would be an absolute shootout since Hawaii considers defense to be an optional part of the game too.

Plus, it's the only bowl that's close to home for me.

I agree that it's still too early to tell, but it's nice to actually have this type of thread.

I lived in Dallas and you fans who want to travel should be rooting Insight, or better yet the Gator Bowl. New Years day, good tradition, SEC opponent.

Not that I want to take the event away from our Dallas fans.   They could use something to do.

Still lots of football to be played, but here are the Big Ten's bowl affiliations

BCS Bowl - Highest ranked B10 team

Rose Bowl - Big 10 #2 - PAC 10/at large

Outback - Big Ten 3 - SEC

Gator - Big Ten 4th/5th place team

Insight #4/5

Texas #6

Dallas #7

Little Caesars #8

There is a chance that the B10 has nine bowl eligible teams this year - Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue all sit at 5 wins. This could put a B10 team in a non-affiliated bowl like the Hawaii Bowl if there are not enough eligible teams from the minor conferences.

I see us anywhere between the Gator and Dallas bowls.

Could we be playing Texas? After the Longhorns performance tonight against Kansas State it makes it a possibilty that Michigan locks up with Texas which would bring in some great exposure for the program and recruiting.

Rittenberg has us projected to the Insight Bowl in his updated projections.  A 10 PM eastern start on a Tuesday night would be interesting.

Seems strange to me that between the Insight, Texas, and Dallas bowls, the lowest ranked one (Dallas) is on Jan. 1st.  Granted, its televised on ESPNU.  Not sure a "January One" bowl means what it used to.

Don't forget that bowl order has as much to do with team attractiveness as it does with record. A 6-6 Michigan team with a healthy Denard and one of the best-travelling alumni groups in the nation would be way more attractive than a 7-5 Northwestern.

In my opinion Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Iowa will be higher bowl picks than Michigan and Northwestern, Indiana, Illinois, or Purdue will be lower picks (even if we finish 6-6 and they finish 7-5). Penn State is a toss-up, if we both finish equal we'll probably get the edge but otherwise it goes to the team with the better record.

So, we're looking at the 5 or 6 spot: Gator (Jacksonville), Insight (Tempe), or Texas (Houston).

FWIW (which is, like, nothing) ESPN projects the insight bowl.  Girlfriend's parents live in Tempe, so I'm pulling for that since I could probably go (short of the 9-3 New Year's Day thing).
