University removes trays in dorm cafeterias

Submitted by PeteM on

This may be barely OT since it involves U of M, but according to this column there are no more plastic trays in the dorm cafeterias (except at Bursley, strangely enough).  No doubt there are rationales involving cost, the environment etc. for this change, but what exactly are Markley (and other Hill dorm) residents supposed to "tray" on in the Arb this time of year?  Anyway, as a  Markleyite from the 1980s, I thought that this was an entertaining eulogy to the passing of the dorm tray:

Mr. Yost may not like this post and came down hard on you.. If so just ask him who has the best coaching staff in college football. He may settle down a touch.

We haven't had trays in the dining halls since my freshman year in 2012-13, with for whatever reason, Bursley being the exception. I think people were taking too many plates of food to fill the trays and would waste much of it. If there are no trays, kids would take fewer plates, and only if they would actually eat it. This is my best attempt to explain it.

I'm sure this means the University will lower the absolutely OBSCENE prices and mandatory meal plans, right?  Should lower the cost of room and board... which is already REMARKABLY low given that at least two people share an 8x10 sterile room and share a group bathroom with 30 other people in a massive, ancient building. Economies of scale at work!  Always thinking about the students and ever lessening cost of attendance!

...which also require fraternity fees, spending large amounts of time on fraternity activities, etc. etc. etc.

In other words, there's costs to everything, whether it be time or money. And, believe it or not, student housing at Michigan is more than decent for what you're paying, location, amenities, security, maintenance, convenience, etc.

My school does this too, it's a pain in the ass. They say its for enviromental reasons, or to curb people from wasting food like what was said above. It's just annoying to constantly go back and forth to get stuff.

It might have been just me, but sledding on trays did tend to get a little frustrating due to the lack of control on certain surfaces / hills / types of snow. Laundry baskets, on the other hand, did provide those vital 0.000001 extra seconds of protection in the event of tree or vehicle collision in a road or parking lot.

Closest to the Arb where the best traying was...I could have lived without trays, but they will get my plastic milk crates when they pry my cold, dead fingers from around them.

Don't know how I could have survived dorm dining without a tray. Those little tiny glasses, you'd have to get like 4 of them to have a reasonable amount of Mountain Dew with your meal. Ain't no one got time for making multiple trips just to get your drink on.

This is so sad.  A few days ago I was spinning yarns to my wife and children who have spent their entire lives in California and Arizona, how much fun it is to sled down the hills in the Arb on a borroweded cafeteria tray.  The end of an era.

As a Markleyite from the 90s(briefly, until I got kicked out of the dorm), I call bullshit on this one.  Sledding is tradition! What's next, they ban South Quad snowball fights?

Ah, yes. Traying. If I remember correctly, the best dorm to steal trays from was MoJo. I actually still have a few of those trays for those snowy days when I feel nostalgic.

I see that they filled in the best spot to tray in the arb with shrubs and small trees.

I swear when conditions were ideal you could tray several hundred yards at speeds rivalling luge runs.

You just had to make sure to avoid the lone tree at the bottom, right in the middle of the run.
