Uniformz: Nike says that our new uniforms will be traditional and not have many changes

Submitted by michgoblue on

Nothing concrete, but the Nike design director for NFL and NCAA apparel said at a Nike event that Nike is "planning on sticking close to tradition" with respect to our uniforms and that Michigan will retain much of the creative controle over our uniforms.  Here's the money quote that is sure to make many here (including me) happy:

“Especially with (Jim) Harbaugh there and his roots there. I would foresee something more along the lines of what we know and love about Michigan.”

My personal view as a traditionalist is that I would hate, hate, hate them.  We don't need to be Oregon - Oregon needs to be Oregon because they don't have a tradition to fall back on.  Like Bama, Texas and a few others, we are a traditional power that doesn't need gimmicky crap to be relevant or cool or hot.  Now please take your dirty shoes off of my well manicured lawn, thanks you very much.

That said, I would bet that the current players and many recruits would think that a chrome winged helmet is totally badass (and if I am being honest, there is a part of me that agrees with that, if it was a one-game thing).  For some reason, players today love the alternative jerseys and uniformzzz stuff.

The whole point with tradition, consistency, and classic style is that it is greater than 18 year-olds.  They benefit from it in the future; it is not immediate gratification but provides the best long-term pride specifically because temptations over time were avoided.  That is what we do.

I like the matte. My recollection on these helmets was the blue was matte, the maize traditional gloss.

Many teams are employing a semi-matte, or eggshell, which is sharp. Soft spot right between matte and gloss. Have seen it on Utes and Sparty, among others. Love to see a mock up of winged eggshell.

But please no chrome, ever, too cheesy and fake. No more bumblebees, no more monochrome (both top and bottom) blues. Open to all whites, maize pants, maybe blue pants.

White socks and black shoes, always please.

I wouldn't mind seeing what a chrome winged helmet would look like, but barring it being completely amazing I'd say no.  We're Michigan.  Using the same "look at me!" bells and whistles that some other programs use to generate interest can backfire.  We don't need it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a chrome helmet for a game. I mean, Michigan plays 12-15 games a year, leaving 11-14 games for the traditional helmet. USC now has a chrome helmet. Not sure if Notre Dame's new helmet is fully chrome but it is much shinier than its traditional helmet (and looks better in my opinion). Those are two of the most iconic uniforms out there. OSU wore all black uniforms this year to the consternation of its fanbase but Meyer said recruits and players loved it. Recruits and players produce wins.

Chances of this happening under Harbaugh? Close to zero. If it does, it would have to come from the players wanting to wear it as opposed to an outside entity approaching Harbaugh about it.

Wow this paragraph surprised me,.

One of our strategies is individual taste analysis. For example, we expect a significant portion of our revenue to come from an individual fan known as Wolverine Devotee, so we've put some resources into identifying ways to maximize that revenue stream.

But I guess I can see where they are coming from.
