UCF Knights unveil 2017 championship banner

Submitted by LLG on

Part of me does think that UCF has a point when I read:  ". . . we feel very strongly as the only undefeated team, and having beat Auburn, who beat both teams competing for the national championship, that we have an extremely sound case to claim the crown."  Maybe not a great point but, still, it is a point.

Also I did not know the Knights finished No. 1 in at least one ranking -- the Colley Bias Free Matrix Rankings, one poll among many recognized by the NCAA that was formerly used in the BCS computer rankings.  I guess if I went to school there, I'd support the banner since the team didn't get a chance to compete in the playoffs.

Anyway, here is the link

I think you missed the point. They're intentionally undermining the playoff. Furthermore, the best thing that can happen to UCF would be the NCAA mandating that they remove the banner. The publicity that would create would only bring more attention to their cause.

FYI, the NCAA has nothing to do with the CFP (nor its prior incarnation as the BCS). It is a private organization that, in essence, serves as a way for the major bowl games to stay relevant (and highly profitable) as DI-A football transitions (painfully slowly, yet inexorably) to having a full-fledged playoff system. As such, the CFP is an invitational tournament that can proclaim whatever champion they want, by whatever methodology they choose. No one else is compelled to accept it, but many choose to.

The NCAA would surely like to run an FBS football Championship --- they would make a TON of money on it.

But many FBS schools, most notably the big $$$ schools, prefer the current system.  So, that's where we are.

Obviously UCF does not fall into the "many FBS schools" above.

First off, who cares? They went 13-0 and beat all comers, not their fault that the system is built as it is - as a single institution, they have no ability to change the NCAA and no option but to participate in it.

As for precedence? Oh man... every major program in the US claims some National Championship pre-modern era that has at least some doubt to its legitimacy. This includes Ohio State, Alabama, even Michigan as major programs doing it. Not to mention a lot of outlier programs who do the same.

I don't think this does any harm and good for them for continuing to build the program in the face of losing their head coach.

Alabama has claimed national championships for less than what UCF accomplished. Bama fans are the only ones who have no right to criticize other programs for claiming a national championship, given the "17 championships" they claim. If anything, UCF is following Alabama's lead.

There should be a real playoff (ideally 16 teams, though we will probably have to start with 8). Until that time, UCF has every right to claim a national title, and credit to them for paying out all their coaching staff's national title bonuses.

Agreed. They're not exactly martyrs. Hang a banner and pass out rings for your undefeated season; that's a huge accomplishment. But to claim "national champs" is something my 7 year old does when he tells my 4 year old "You're ohio state" and plows him over with a football under his arm.

The team who finished 20th wouldn’t be undefeated. Even an undefeated MAC school (WMU) would place in the top 16, and of course if this happened there would certainly be a deal for the top non P5 team just like there is for current top Bowl games. I agree it’s lame that they made rings and put it on their stadium because it’s not real, but they have more claim than anyone who would be left out of a potential 16 team playoff. What we would hear would be similar to NCAA basketball where teams 65-70 gripe about missing the tournament but don’t claim titles, theses teams would gripe about missing the tourney instead.

UCF is adorable because they think they're the first team to go undefeated and not be handed a championship. Go talk to 2006 Boise St, 2009 Boise St, and 2008 Utah. They don't hang fake banners and jerk themselves off by claiming a national title. They recognize they had a great accomplishment by going undefeated but they didn't extrapolate it into some ludicrous statement about how they were the best team in the country after playing like two real teams all year.

Thank you.  This is the correct take.  UCF looks like a bunch of jackasses in my book.  All this says is, if you want to "win the national championship", play in a horseshit conference against horseshit teams, and then pull out all the stops to beat the one actual real team you play, after which you can have a dumbass banner based on the totally real concept of the transitive property of sports.

They won all their games, and even beat the team that beat both finalists. The CFP is a complete joke anyway, UCF's claim is wholly legitimate.

Has as much of a claim as most of Alabama’s championships. I love it, the system is set up to prevent them from having a chance at the playoffs.

It was one thing to claim a national championship back when there was no national championship game or CFP...

Now it's just kinda lame

let alone capping it off beating Auburn makes them champions no matter how you slice it.

Think of the determination and perservance those players on the winless team had to dig themselves out of that hole.

It's one of the most impressive turnarounds and team efforts in recent CFB.

Among the many reasons we are CFB fans.

Let's get that 2013 banner up! We have just as much of a claim as UCF in football!

Us: Hey NCAA, how did we do in that national championship?

NCAA: You lost.

Us: Who did we lose to?

NCAA: Uhhhhh...

In all seriousness though, I just want a giant banner of the Trey Burke block in the rafters instead.

"The Block Was Clean....And So Was The Team...2013"
