U-M Hockey vs MN St - Saturday Open Thread

The ice was tilted the wrong way at the beginning of last night's game. The Bulldogs had a bunch of shots on goal, and we had none. But their captain went all contact to the head on Blankenburg and game misconducted himself to the lockerroom. And the ice began to tilt back our way.

Now we face #1 MN St, which beat up on Providence. Let's start this game on time.

Let's Go Blue! Beat the Mavericks!

I tend to have Michigan hockey tunnel vision. Can anyone (please and with genuine acknowledgement of the generosity of time spent) describe their team for me?

No need for an exegesis. The ranking speaks for itself; I’m just curious about their style/age/talent. Either stereotypes or — in front page acronym vernacular — “YMR(them)FS(teams)A” are totally acceptable.

This is gonna be peak old team vs young team. Mankato is skating two guys who I think are 24 or 25. Don’t really know why guys this old are allowed to play college hockey. Go play for some ECHL team

Dickinson is 20. I don't know where the myth of him being an old man started, but sheesh. I'd imagine a significant portion of Michigan's (and all schools') freshman class is 19.

Sure he started college a little older than most, but he's also not gonna play college ball for 4 years.

In all likelihood he will go pro after this season - at 21.  That's not an old player by any stretch.

For a college sophomore? No it’s not. The Minnesota State guys who are 24-25 are seniors. How old would Dickinson be as a Senior/5th year? That’s the point I’m making. Dickinson starts college later than most and it’s cool. It’s NORMAL to do that in college hockey and all of a sudden it’s a problem and shouldn’t be allowed?

For someone who knows little about college hockey the announcers calling them Mankato over and over is a little odd. I'm sure it means something and I could look it up but I'll leave it shrouded in mystery.

I think until 5-10 years ago, they were commonly called MSU-Mankato. Like Mankato was always said with their name. I think as they've risen in prominence over some of the other state schools, they're trying to just go by MSU. In college hockey people are used to calling them Mankato
